Europe's Natural Gas Prices Rise on Supply Outage in Norway
Europe's benchmark natural gas prices rose early on Monday following an unplanned cut to capacity of the giant Troll gas field in Norway, the single largest supplier of gas to Europe. Dutch TTF Natural Gas Futures, the benchmark for Europe's gas trading, jumped by 2.2% at trade open in Amsterdam on Monday, before easing some gains to trade 1.2% higher at 11:30 a.m. local time. The rise at the start of this week extends four consecutive weeks of weekly gains in European gas prices as the market is reacting to unplanned supply disruptions at a time when Europe races with time – and with Asia – to refill gas storage sites ahead of the 2025/2026 winter. The unplanned cuts to Troll's capacity in the North Sea comes ahead of planned extensive maintenance season at several Norwegian gas fields, which will reduce pipeline supply to Europe in the summer. Currently, Norwegian gas supply is somewhat restricted as there is planned maintenance at the Nyhamna processing plant and the Aasta Hansteen field. Thus, European countries will have to rely on more LNG cargoes to bring natural gas to the continent. Last year, Troll produced record-high volumes of natural gas, up by 10% compared to the previous high from 2022, the field operator Equinor said early this year. 'With record-high production in 2024, the Troll field confirms its position as a pillar of Europe's energy security. The field contributes to a stable gas supply for millions of households and is important for European industry,' Kjetil Hove, Equinor's executive vice president for Exploration & Production Norway, said at the time. Traders and analysts will be watching closely the pace of Europe's storage refills in the coming months, as well as LNG demand in Asia and whether North Asian demand would rise and potentially compete for spot cargoes with Europe. Norway Bets Big on Offshore Wind
Norway announced on Monday a tender for three project areas for floating offshore wind in a highly-anticipated first competition for this type of renewable energy in the Nordic country. The Norwegian Energy Ministry, which said earlier this year that it would bet on floating wind instead of fixed-bottom offshore wind, is now opening competition for project areas for offshore wind in Utsira Nord outside the coast of Rogaland off Norway's southwest coast. The installed capacity in each project area cannot exceed 500 megawatts (MW), according to the competition tender, in which applications for projects will be received until September 15, 2025. Norway will subsidize the projects, for a total of $3.4 billion (35 billion Norwegian crowns) cap for state aid at Utsira Nord. Winning bids will have two years to mature their projects and participate in an auction for state aid as a direct grant in 2028 or 2029. The model for allocating project areas and government support – developed in dialogue with the offshore industry – is adapted to floating offshore wind and will contribute to both technology development and cost reductions for subsequent projects, Energy Minister Terje Aasland said in a statement. Earlier this year, Norway scrapped plans to hold a fixed-bottom offshore wind tender at the Sørvest F offshore area in 2025, due to high costs to connect power to the grid. Instead of fixed-bottom offshore wind at Sørvest F, the Norwegian government will prioritize floating wind in the tenders with radial links to the grid, the energy ministry said in February. Norway's floating wind tender comes as the global offshore wind industry continues to face significant headwinds relating to supply chain, regulatory, and macroeconomic developments. Orsted, the world's biggest offshore wind project developer, earlier this month warned of a continued challenging environment for the industry. Due to higher costs and interest rates, the company announced it had decided to discontinue the development of the Hornsea 4 offshore wind project in the UK in its current form. Michael Kern is taking his talents to the west coast
Former Longhorns punter Michael Kern is taking his talents to the West Coast. After entering the transfer portal a few weeks ago, he committed to the University of California on Monday. He joins the Bears after a solid freshman year with Texas. During the 2024 campaign, Kern averaged 41.7 yards per punt. His longest kick went 57 yards, and 10 were caught inside the 20. While Kern was productive when called upon, he missed the season's final two games. His role became unclear when the Longhorns added Utah transfer Jack Bouwmeester in the transfer portal. Coming out of high school, Kern was ranked as the fourth-best punter in his class. In his final season at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, the Florida native punted 25 times for 1,158 yards, averaging 46.3 yards per punt. Due to his stellar play, Kern was also named to the Under Armour All-American Bowl. Although his Longhrons career ended earlier than expected, Kern impressed coaches during his tenure. At spring practices, his play stood out to head coach Steve Sarkisian. "Talented room of specialists for sure," Sarkisian said. "Michael Kern, have seen a definite big uptick in him. He's healthy to go along with Jack, and both those guys can bomb the ball. And when you punt the ball and it's a weapon for you, we felt that a couple different years with (Ryan) Sanborn and (Cameron) Dicker when they were at a high level, and flipping the field and things of that nature. So feel good there." Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle As Kern adjusts to a new system, he will have to battle for playing time. His competition includes Brook Honore, who was also signed out of the transfer portal. If Kern can continue to build on his play in the spring, he should get a decent amount of playing time with the Bears.

Former Texas Starter Visiting Unexpected Big 12 Program
Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian has taken his program to two straight College Football Playoff semifinals. However, now he is tasked with replacing a starter from last season's team. True freshman punter Michael Kern entered the transfer portal on Friday, leaving a hole in special teams. Advertisement On3's Pete Nakos reported that a former Big 12 foe is visiting with Kern in the form of the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Kern was a member of Texas' 2024 recruiting class, which ranked sixth nationally on On3 Sports. Texas reached the SEC Championship Game and lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the semifinal of the playoff. Texas Longhorns kicker Michael Kern (39). Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Texas initially recruited Kern as a kicker, and he was a three-star recruit in the 2024 class. He was the No. 8 kicker in the On3 Industry Rankings. Kern had 64 punts in 2024, 1,706 total punt yards, and an average of 41.6 yards per punt. He played in all 16 of the Longhorns' games last season. Advertisement Texas has added 10 players from the portal and lost 16. The Longhorns' most significant losses are receiver Johntay Cook II, tight end Amari Niblack, edge rusher Justice Finkley, and linebacker Derion Gullette. Defensive lineman Travis Shaw (North Carolina), defensive lineman Hero Kanu (Ohio State), defensive lineman Cole Brevard (Purdue), receiver Emmett Mosley (Stanford), and linebacker Brad Spence (Arkansas) highlight the program's transfer additions. After starting the 2024 season ranked No. 17, Oklahoma State ended the year at 3-9. The Cowboys won their first three games, but went on a nine-game losing streak to close out the regular season.
