Historic Dundalk pub built on site where legend says Edward the Bruce was crowned High King of Ireland for sale

Michael McCourt's at No 1 Francis Street, which is also known as King Bruce's Tavern, is built on the site of Mortimer's Castle where it is reputed that Edward the Bruce was declared King of Ireland on May 1 1316. Brother of the Scottish King Robert Bruce, he was killed at the Battle of Faughart just three years later. In more recent times, the impressive property was the home of Charles Elgee, a prominent builder who was responsible for the construction of Dundalk's courthouse among other notable buildings and is commemorated by the Elgee Building at the Market Square. He was also the grandfather of Jane (Esperanza) Elgee, the mother of Oscar Wilde. The present licenced premises, which was built around 1870, was founded by Michael McCourt in 1920 and is currently run by his son, who bears the same name. It is very much a traditional Irish public house, where regulars are warmly welcomed and visitors made feel at home. The property comprises a substantial bar and lounge with beer garden, stores, and a large yard. There is living accommodation upstairs with an impressive sitting room graced by many original features, a kitchen/dining/living room leading to a first floor terrace, four good-sized bedrooms, an office and three bedrooms. There is a separate residence to the rear with vehicular access from the Ramparts Road. Auctioneer Anthony McArdle of McArdle and Sons, who is handling the sale, says that 469 m² property has potential as a restaurant or hotel.
