'Big Skygazer' sculpture to be unveiled in Mote Park

A 13-metre-long wooden sculpture, which is part of the restoration and rejuvenation of Mote Park in Roscommon, is being unveiled today. The 'Big Skygazer' is a curved wooden bench, which will allow visitors to enjoy the beautiful surrounding woodland. Mote Park, close to Roscommon town, sustained significant during Storm Éowyn in January. It is hoped the artwork, which is part of efforts to transform and rejuvenate the park, will attract more visitors to the area. The artwork was created by Mayo artist Cathal McCarthy, in collaboration with designer Michael McLaughlin, and has been crafted from sustainably sourced Irish Douglas Fir timber.

Canadian Police Impound YouTuber's GT-R for Speeding, Drop Him Off at Tim Horton's

The driver of a highly modified R35-generation Nissan GT-R was hit with a fine and had his car impounded when his own car apparently betrayed him: the modified exhaust alerted officers of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's Highway Patrol that the car was rapidly accelerating from a stop light, giving authorities a chance to ready their laser gun and clocked the car going 150 kph (93 mph) in a 90 kph (56 mph) zone, according to a report issued by the police. Authorities say the incident occurred on February 2 at around 6 p.m. in Lantzville, British Columbia. When police pulled the Nissan GT-R driver over, he identified himself as a YouTube influencer. Police made a note of stating that the driver and his passenger were polite, and that Godzilla's driver was reportedly shocked that he was nabbed for speeding; he said he didn't see the unmarked police car and he thought his radar detector would alert him to any speed traps. 'The driver did not realize that in the hands of a skilled police officer, a laser reader will not be picked up by a detector until it's too late,' Corporal Michael McLaughlin of the British Columbia Highway Patrol said in a statement. #BCHighwayPatrol - Surprise! A radar detector did not save this Nissan GT-R driver from an excessive speeding ticket and impound — BC Highway Patrol (@BCHwyPatrol) February 5, 2025 The GT-R owner was issued a ticket for excessive speed, which carries a fine of $368 Canadian. The ticket also comes with a mandatory seven-day impound — so, as the photo above show, the GT-R driver's beloved car was loaded up on a flatbed and hauled away. From there, the story takes a decidedly Canadian turn, as the driver and his passenger accepted a ride from the Mounties to a local Tim Horton's coffee shop, where they could wait for a ride home from the driver's mother. We're guessing his mom probably isn't too happy about having to drive her son around everywhere for the next week. Police say YouTuber caught speeding on Vancouver Island loses car for a week

LANTZVILLE, B.C. — Mounties on Vancouver Island say a man who described himself as a YouTube influencer had his vehicle impounded and was fined $368 for speeding. Police say an unmarked BC Highway Patrol officer was working Sunday in Lantzville when he heard an "excessively loud" vehicle accelerate from a stoplight on Highway 19. They say the driver of the "highly modified" yellow Nissan GT-R was clocked going 150 km/h in a 90 km/h zone. Cpl. Michael McLaughlin says the driver, who identified himself as influencer during the traffic stop, never saw the unmarked police car and added that his radar detector didn't tip him off either. On top of the ticket for excessive speed, the man's car was impounded for seven days. Police say the driver and his passenger were polite throughout the stop and they accepted an offer to being dropped at a nearby Tim Hortons to wait for a ride from the driver's mother.
