Bradford school among first to benefit from solar scheme
A school in Bradford is one of the first in the country to install solar panels as part of a national push to save energy at schools and Primary Academy, in the Barkerend area of the city, is expected to save up to £13,000 a year on energy costs as a result, with the money being re-invested into the work was paid for through a £180m fund administered by the government's new state-owned energy company Great British Energy (GBE).Energy Minister Michael Shanks said: "Solar panels on school rooftops mean energy bills are cut and money can be invested directly into improving young people's education while helping to tackle climate change for the next generation." Bradford Council granted planning permission for the installation of a 54.74kWp solar array on the roof of the school in is among 11 schools chosen for the first wave of the scheme, with the remaining schools due to be selected later this follows the government's announcement in March to award funding for schools and hospitals to install solar panels, the first major project for GBE. GBE chair Juergen Maier said: "Within two months we are seeing schools supported by our scheme having solar panels installed so they can start reaping the rewards of clean energy – opening up the opportunity for more money to be spent on our children rather than energy bills."At present only 20% of schools have solar panels installed, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Maier said estimates suggested that on average a typical school could save up to £25,000 per year if they had solar panels with complementary technologies installed such as batteries. After Kype Muir Wind Farm became the first project in the UK to secure consent for 132-meter turbines, OnPath Energy launched in 2019, the Kype Muir Community Partnership (KMCP) which was established to ensure nearby communities benefit directly from the wind farm's success. The purpose is to make community-driven action facilitate long-lasting benefits for the community's surrounding the projects. In addition, the community fund supported a jobs and skills collaboration with South Lanarkshire Council which has supported over 2000 people into employment or education. Notably, in collaboration with NATS, OnPath Energy (then Banks Renewables) funded a new radar system in 2019 for Glasgow Airport, which enabled the development of not only Kype Muir Wind Farm, it also unlocked £500m worth of development in the area from other projects. Kype Muir Wind Farm was also the first onshore wind site to benefit from the UK Governments Contract for Difference having taken part in Auction Round 1. Combined, both projects will contribute an estimated £188 million to the Scottish economy, with £159 million of that investment within a 60km radius of the site. Hattiesburg man arrested after fight leads to fatal shooting
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WHLT) – Hattiesburg police announced a man was arrested in connection to a fatal shooting. Michael Shanks, 61, was arrested and booked into the Forrest County Jail. He has been charged with first-degree murder. The shooting happened near the intersection of E. 9th Street and Dewey Street just before 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 30. Police said two men, who are family members, were involved in a fight that escalated to gunfire. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and later died from his injuries. HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WHLT) – Hattiesburg police are searching for a 61-year-old man in connection to a shooting. The shooting happened near the intersection of E. 9th Street and Dewey Street just before 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 30. Multi-vehicle crash in Hattiesburg leaves one injured Police said two men, who are family members, were involved in a fight that escalated to gunfire. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Officers are searching for Michael Shanks, 61, in connection to the case. Investigators said there is no immediate threat to the public.
