This time around, the band returns with yet another live recording that proves just how potent its catalog remains. The latest release arrived in time for Record Store Day — and, as usual, it's already a bestseller.
The newest title from the Dead's ever-growing collection of live albums is Beacon Theatre, New York, NY, June 14, 1976, and it launches on two Billboard charts this week. The effort opens at No. 19 on the Vinyl Albums list and enters at No. 27 on the Top Album Sales tally. Neither appearance is out of the ordinary for the group, which has now reached both rosters dozens of times — but that's still an impressive showing, especially for a set recorded almost 50 years ago.
According to Luminate, Beacon Theatre sold exactly 5,500 copies in the U.S. during the tracking frame. That's not just a lofty figure — it's the full run of vinyl pressed for Record Store Day. The limited edition title sold out entirely, something few other acts can ever claim, for a variety of reasons. The Grateful Dead is one of the only acts out there that lets demand outpace supply, but the strategy seems to work perfectly every time it's employed.
Beacon Theatre was issued as a five-LP vinyl set, and it's the first time this particular concert has been released in the format. The tapes were carefully restored, speed-corrected, and mastered specifically for vinyl play, a detail that audiophiles will likely appreciate. The show features 23 songs, though given the Grateful Dead's reputation for sprawling jams and musical exploration, some sides of the records include only one or two tracks apiece.
With Beacon Theatre entering both the Vinyl Albums and Top Album Sales rankings, the Grateful Dead adds to what's already an almost absurdly long list of appearances. This latest win marks the band's thirty-sixth placement on the Vinyl Albums chart. On the Top Album Sales tally, the group has now charted a staggering 129 titles. Those kinds of totals put the band in rarefied territory.
