The Grateful Dead's New Album Didn't Just Sell Well — It Sold Out In One Week

The Grateful Dead's Beacon Theatre, New York, NY, June 14, 1976 debuts on Billboard's Vinyl Albums ... More and Top Album Sales charts after selling out its Record Store Day pressing. UNSPECIFIED - CIRCA 1960: Photo of Grateful Dead Photo by MichaelThe Grateful Dead hasn't been an active band in decades — but you wouldn't know it from the Billboard charts. Every year, the jam outfit lands new wins across multiple tallies, thanks to a bursting archive that just keeps delivering and a fan base that's arguably as passionate now as it was at the peak of the group's touring days.
This time around, the band returns with yet another live recording that proves just how potent its catalog remains. The latest release arrived in time for Record Store Day — and, as usual, it's already a bestseller.
The newest title from the Dead's ever-growing collection of live albums is Beacon Theatre, New York, NY, June 14, 1976, and it launches on two Billboard charts this week. The effort opens at No. 19 on the Vinyl Albums list and enters at No. 27 on the Top Album Sales tally. Neither appearance is out of the ordinary for the group, which has now reached both rosters dozens of times — but that's still an impressive showing, especially for a set recorded almost 50 years ago.
According to Luminate, Beacon Theatre sold exactly 5,500 copies in the U.S. during the tracking frame. That's not just a lofty figure — it's the full run of vinyl pressed for Record Store Day. The limited edition title sold out entirely, something few other acts can ever claim, for a variety of reasons. The Grateful Dead is one of the only acts out there that lets demand outpace supply, but the strategy seems to work perfectly every time it's employed.
Beacon Theatre was issued as a five-LP vinyl set, and it's the first time this particular concert has been released in the format. The tapes were carefully restored, speed-corrected, and mastered specifically for vinyl play, a detail that audiophiles will likely appreciate. The show features 23 songs, though given the Grateful Dead's reputation for sprawling jams and musical exploration, some sides of the records include only one or two tracks apiece.
With Beacon Theatre entering both the Vinyl Albums and Top Album Sales rankings, the Grateful Dead adds to what's already an almost absurdly long list of appearances. This latest win marks the band's thirty-sixth placement on the Vinyl Albums chart. On the Top Album Sales tally, the group has now charted a staggering 129 titles. Those kinds of totals put the band in rarefied territory.

‘Shark in the pond!' Rhode Island boaters experience incredible ‘Jaws' moment

A customer at a Rhode Island restaurant this week captured an extraordinary scene on video as a giant shark surfaced behind boaters in Great Salt Pond. In the footage, as the shark's fins slice through the water, a woman exclaims, 'There's a shark in the pond!' As noted by the Atlantic Shark Institute, the sighting was 'reminiscent of a scene from 'Jaws' on the 50th anniversary of the film.' It's clear that this was a massive shark, but the ASI was quick to correct false theories in explaining that it was a harmless basking shark, not a potentially dangerous great white. The ASI explained in a separate post: 'Here is the culprit that got almost 14 million views, thousands of comments, and was thought to be about 10 different species of shark for its unique and eye catching visit to a pond in Block Island, RI this week! 'The species, which many guessed accurately, was a basking shark, the second largest fish in the world.' The basking shark was estimated to measure about 20 feet. The footage was captured by Jen Seebeck from Dead Eye Dick's restaurant. This article originally appeared on For The Win: 'Shark in the pond!' Rhode Island boaters experience 'Jaws' moment

Tiësto and Sexyy Red are revving their engines with the just-released collab 'OMG!' 'No one, absolutely no one, but here it is, and it's an amazing track. I think people will really like it. It's super dance.' 'OMG!' has been in the works for awhile, with Tiësto playing it during a huge performance in October at the annual dance gathering ADE. The track comes from the F1 the Album soundtrack, with the corresponding film hitting theaters on June 27, the same day the soundtrack will be released. This soundtrack brings together a collection of musical titans including music by Dom Dolla (who's slick contribution 'No Room For a Saint' came out last month), Doja Cat, ROSÉ, Peggy Gou, Chris Stapleton, Ed Sheeran, Raye, Burna Boy, Roddy Rich, Madison Beer, Tate McRae, Don Toliver and Myke Towers. Tiësto, a known racing fan, also makes a cameo in the film, which stars Pitt as an aging F1 driver who returns to the sport after a long absence, along with Damson Idris, Kerry Condon and Javier Bardem. F1 The Movie was directed by Joseph Kosinski, who also directed the global blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick. Songwriting has changed, says Barry Manilow

Barry Manilow thinks "songwriting has changed". The 81-year-old star released his eponymous debut album back in 1973, but he admits that songwriting has changed dramatically during the course of his career. Speaking to Billboard, he explained: "The songwriting has changed. "Young people don't write the way I was trained to write. There's no verse which goes into the chorus which goes back to the verse which goes to ending, and you change keys. They don't do that. "They start the song and then they just … it feels like a run-on sentence to me. I can't find the hook. I can't find the chorus. It just keeps on going, and then it ends." Manilow observed that a lot of his contemporaries have already retired from the music business. However, he has no intention of stepping back for the time being. The 'Could It Be Magic' hitmaker said: "It's like, 'What? Am I the only one left?' "It's Billy Joel, and Elton (John) is not well and Rod (Stewart) and Neil (Diamond). Diana Ross is still in great shape, I think. There must be only a handful of people in my world that are still there. "I'm still healthy. I'm strong and I've still got my voice and my energy. The night I can't hit the F natural on 'Even Now,' that's the night I throw in the towel. But I can still do it." Manilow has recently been working on a new album, which he hopes to release later this year. However, he admits that the creative process has been far from straightforward. The music icon explained: "This'll probably be my last album. "I've been working on it for a long time … for so long that the style of music has changed. "I had to go back and redo (the songs) so they sounded a little more contemporary. I had to take all the strings out, all the background vocals out 'cause they don't do that anymore. They don't use strings and background vocals and all that. "Even I heard that it sounded dated, so we had to go back and redo it."
