Rare, centuries-old hairdressing memorabilia now on show in Christchurch

Hairdresser Michael Turner has been collecting hairdressing tools for more than 25 years, building the biggest private collection in the Southern Hemisphere, including thousand-year-old Roman-era blades. Other items dating back to the 1800s are now on public display at Ferrymead Heritage Park. Turner's favourite object was a 19th century gentleman's metal shaving bowl with a scooped edge that fits under the chin and came with pliers for teeth removal and several real teeth. The only other one I know of of this particular type is in Durham Museum in England. They are very, very rare and difficult to come with but really simple," he said. Turner had also collected several large hairdryers, including devices built into a chair, free-standing and bonnet-style with shoulder straps. Michael Turner. You can crank it up if it is too cold or turn it down if its too hot," he said. The collection includes a number of historical curling tongs, including a Smart Cousins Perfect Wave set heated by fire, and a slightly later invention that could be plugged into a light socket. "This Smart Cousins Perfect Wave you put into the hair to give yourself finger waves. First of all, you heat it over a open flame or some form of heat, then get a towel or cloth and wipe it so you have moisture on there as well," he said. "Once you have moist heat you place that into the hair, close it down, pull the device that moves it up or down depending on which way you want your waves to be." He hoped people could have fun playing with them. "It's interactive, they can put it over their heads, stick their heads in it, open it, close it, pull it out play with it, see how it was put together in the olden days," he said. Ferrymead Heritage Park general manager Ian France said staff were thrilled to have such a carefully curated collection on public display. Ferrymead Heritage Park general manager Ian France. Looking after something that has been looked after and curated for so long," he said. The collection will be on display in two parts of the park, with modern items in the "hall of wheels" and others in the barber shop and tobacconist on the main street. 13-year-old hit in chest, killed when firework goes off in hands, MN cops say

A teenager is dead after a firework hit him in the chest, killing him on the Fourth of July, Minnesota officials told news outlets. Deputies responded to a call for help at about 11 p.m. Friday, July 4, from Naytahwaush — a small community in Mahnomen County, the sheriff's office told WCCO. When deputies arrived, they located a 13-year-old boy who had no pulse and wasn't breathing, according to the outlet. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the teen, identified as Michael Turner, was pronounced dead shortly after midnight, the sheriff's office told KSTP. Deputies say bystanders also performed chest compressions on Turner before first responders arrived, the station reported. According to deputies, witnesses say the boy was holding a 'large' firework and aiming it away from himself while it was lit, WDIO reported. However, the firework shot out backward, exiting from the bottom of the tube and hitting the teen in the chest, the sheriff's office said. An autopsy was scheduled and an investigation is underway, the station reported. Naytahwaush is a roughly 250-mile drive northwest from Minneapolis.

Several groups propose improvement plans to 4B sales tax board

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — The 4B sales tax in Wichita Falls is meant to help fund improvements to life throughout the city. In a meeting on Thursday, June 5, the board overseeing those tax funds met to hear the different proposals they can put some of the money toward. One of the proposals from the day's meeting was an improvement to the area around the falls off of I-44. The presentation by Russell Schreiber from Public Works, along with a representative from Garver in Fort Worth, proposed improvements such as new parking areas around the falls and new methods for pumping water through the feature, thereby enhancing its overall appearance. 'That's the landmark of the city of Wichita Falls,' Schreiber said. 'We really like that thing to operate more than it has been in the past, as well as maybe probably to try to improve the overall water quality. I mean, it is the landmark of the city of Wichita Falls.' Another proposal was to improve the tennis facilities at Hamilton Park. Director of Falls Town Tennis, Michael Turner, proposed improving the facilities with new covered tennis courts, which would allow the courts to hold more tournaments. It's a feature Turner says would be a big economic opportunity. 'If we held a two-day tournament, it brings in $64,000 per tournament,' Turner said. 'We hold six of these a year currently. These tournaments are not full currently because of the facility that we have.' These were just a couple of the proposals brought to the board. Each one will be voted on before further steps can be taken to fine-tune the approved proposals. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Police chief backs regionalization for departments

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The possibility of another regional police department in our area is coming soon. The Wyoming Area Regional Police Chief is in full support of regionalization for other departments looking to make the change. He says it creates a more efficient, effective, and resourceful police force; one he now leads. Rain Rally raises money for Special Olympics Chief Michael Turner is still finding ways to utilize all the space in his police department. In the basement are rooms with resources he's never had before in a police station. Upstairs, most of his leadership team even have their own offices. 'It is the best thing that has happened in this area by far.' That 'best thing' happened in 2023, that's when the Wyoming Area Regional Police Department formed, combining five individual police departments -Exeter Township, Exeter Borough, West Pittston, West Wyoming, and Wyoming Borough. Chief Turner says it's provided a stronger foundation for his guys and the nearly 20,000 residents they serve. The regional department is now stacked with 19 officers who are equipped with more tools, assigned to specific areas of crime, and designated to serve in specific zoning areas across 37 square miles. 'It's a no-brainer. The end game is to provide the best services you can to your community. The best thing to see is when departments work together.' Some reports indicate Edwardsville Borough Police and Larksville Police Department could be coming together in the near future, and Chief Turner gives the idea the thumbs up. But with change comes challenge, and Chief Turner says staying within the budget is the toughest challenge. 'There are challenges with everything, but we spend on what we need, not what we want'. Five stars for five communities, green and gold to represent a local school district, and the Water Street Bridge make up the patch ironed on Chief Turner's sleeve. A reminder of the new commitment to service. 'Regionalize, it's the answer to law enforcement.' We reached out to both Edwardsville and Larksville police departments, who told us the regionalization plan is in the early stages and couldn't release details. Chief Turner says after securing more funding, he purchased body cameras, dash cameras, stun guns, and new vehicles. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Motorcyclist arrested for allegedly driving over 100 mph on Westside Parkway, possessing firearms: BPD

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of reckless driving and numerous firearms violations, according to the Bakersfield Police Department. At around 7:50 a.m. May 20, an officer tried stopping a motorcyclist who was driving at over 100 mph on the Westside Parkway. The motorcyclist didn't stop and exited the parkway, police said. The motorcyclist then ran a red light while driving southbound on Coffee Road at Truxtun Avenue, according to officials. BPD said the officer didn't chase the motorcyclist in the interest of public safety, but the motorcycle's license plate number was used to identify the registered owner of the vehicle as Michael Turner, along with his residence. Man arrested in California City for allegedly owning firearms against court order: Cal City PD Officers from the BPD Traffic Division went to the home and saw a bike matching the description of the motorcycle inside a black SUV that was leaving the residence, according to police. Bakersfield police officers executed two search warrants at the home and found numerous firearms, ammunition, body armor, an AR-15 without a serial number, AR uppers in various stages of completion, jigs, jig instruction and several high-capacity magazines in various calibers. Turner, 51, was taken into custody at his workplace, BPD said. The motorcycle was impounded for 30 days, according to police. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
