OpenAI releases GPT-5, free to users
Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Open AI announced Thursday the release of GPT-5, the latest and most-advanced iteration of its artificial intelligence technology, which will be free to users. The company said the program, which underwent 5,000 hours of testing, is smarter, faster and more useful than the previous model, GPT-4, and will be especially efficient at writing, coding and for use in the healthcare sector. "I tried going back to GPT-4, and it was quite miserable," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told reporters. OpenAI said it expects to reach 700 million weekly users on ChatGPT this week, and is talking with investors who are discussing a potential stock valuation of $500 billion, CNBC has reported. While GPT-4 can refuse to answer user questions if they are "potentially risky," GPT-5 has been designed to provide high-level responses within certain safety restraints so it cannot be used to cause harm, the company said. "GPT-5 has been trained to recognize when a task can't be finished, avoid speculation and can explain limitations more clearly, which reduces unsupported claims compared to prior models," said Michelle Pokrass, a trainer at OpenAI. GPT-5 marks the first time that users have access to a reasoning feature, which allows the software to "think" or carry out what's known as an internal chain of thoughts before responding, the company said. Advanced reasoning and safer outputs One of the most notable differences between GPT-5 and GPT-4 is the model's enhanced reasoning capability. OpenAI said GPT-5 has been trained to 'think' before responding, engaging in internal chains of thought to generate more accurate and context-aware answers. GPT-5, according to CNBC, fabricates less information compared to GPT-4. The model has been trained to recognize when a task is incomplete, avoid speculation, and clearly explain its limitations. This reduces hallucinations and improves transparency. In cases of potentially risky queries, GPT-5 uses a new technique called 'safe completions' which offers high-level answers within secure boundaries without entirely refusing to respond. Performance across domains GPT-5 is also significantly faster than GPT-4, OpenAI said. The model does not excel in writing, coding, education and healthcare-related use cases. During a demonstration, GPT-5 was asked to build a French-learning web app with flashcards and quizzes based solely on a written prompt. Within seconds, the model generated fully functional applications with different themes, which showcased its improved design and development abilities. Users can now access web search, image generation, voice capabilities, and advanced creative tools like Canvas within the same interface. GPT-5 is also being deployed across Microsoft products like Microsoft 365 Copilot and Azure AI Foundry. Additionally, three model variants are available via OpenAI's API: GPT-5, GPT-5-mini, and GPT-5-nano, designed for different performance and cost requirements. Expanded access across pricing tiers The GPT-5 is currently accessible to all tiers of usage. Free-tier people have access to GPT-5 until they hit the limits of usage; afterward, they shall be entitled to GPT-5 mini. OpenAI releases ChatGPT-5 as AI race accelerates
ChatGPT-5 is rolling out free to all users of the AI tool, which is used by nearly 700 million people weekly, OpenAI said in a briefing with journalists. Co-founder and chief executive Sam Altman touted this latest iteration as "clearly a model that is generally intelligent." "It is a significant step toward models that are really capable," he said. Altman cautioned that there is still work to be done to achieve the kind of artificial general intelligence (AGI) that thinks the way people do. "This is not a model that continuously learns as it is deployed from new things it finds, which is something that, to me, feels like it should be part of an AGI," Altman said. "But the level of capability here is a huge improvement." GPT-5 is particularly adept when it comes to AI acting as an "agent" independently tending to computer tasks, according to Michelle Pokrass of the development team. "GPT-3 felt to me like talking to a high school student -- ask a question, maybe you get a right answer, maybe you'll get something crazy," Altman said. "GPT-4 felt like you're talking to a college student; GPT five is the first time that it really feels like talking to a PhD-level expert in any topic." Vibe coding Altman said he expects the ability to create software programs on demand -- so-called "vibe-coding" -- to be a "defining part of the new ChatGPT-5 era." OpenAI Finally Launched GPT-5. Here's Everything You Need to Know
OpenAI's blog post claims that GPT-5 beats its previous models on several coding benchmarks, including SWE-Bench Verified (scoring 74.9 percent), SWE-Lancer (GPT-5-thinking scored 55 percent), and Aider Polyglot (scored 88 percent), which test the model's ability to fix bugs, complete freelance-style coding tasks, and work across multiple programming languages. During the press briefing on Wednesday, OpenAI post-training lead Yann Dubois prompted GPT-5 to 'create a beautiful, highly interactive web app for my partner, an English speaker, to learn French.' He tasked the AI to include features like daily progress, a variety of activities like flashcards and quizzes, and noted that he wanted the app wrapped up in a 'highly engaging theme.' After a minute or so, the AI-generated app popped up. While it was just one on-rails demo, the result was a sleek site that delivered exactly what Dubois asked for. 'It's a great coding collaborator, and also excels at agentic tasks,' Michelle Pokrass, a post-training lead, says. 'It executes long chains and tool calls effectively [which means it better understands when and how to use functions like web browsers or external APIs], follows detailed instructions, and provides upfront explanations of its actions." OpenAI also says in its blog post that GPT-5 is 'our best model yet for health-related questions.' In three OpenAI health-related LLM benchmarks—HealthBench, HealthBench Hard, and HealthBench Consensus—the system card (a document that describes the product's technical capabilities and other research findings) states that GPT-5-thinking outperforms previous models 'by a substantial margin.' The thinking version of GPT-5 scored 25.5 percent on HealthBench Hard, up from o3's 31.6 percent score. These scores are validated by two or more physicians, according to the system card. The model also allegedly hallucinates less, according to Pokrass, a common issue for AI where it provides false information. OpenAI's safety research lead Alex Beutel adds that they've "significantly decreased the rates of deception in GPT-5.' 'We've taken steps to reduce GPT-5-thinking's propensity to deceive, cheat, or hack problems, though our mitigations are not perfect and more research is needed,' the system card says. 'In particular, we've trained the model to fail gracefully when posed with tasks that it cannot solve.' The company's system card says that after testing GPT-5 models without access to web browsing, researchers found its hallucination rate (which they defined as 'percentage of factual claims that contain minor or major errors') 26 percent less common than the GPT-4o model. GPT-5-thinking has a 65 percent reduced hallucination rate compared to o3. For prompts that could be dual-use (potentially harmful or benign), Beutel says GPT-5 uses 'safe completions,' which prompts the model to 'give as helpful an answer as possible, but within the constraints of remaining safe.' OpenAI did over 5,000 hours of red teaming, according to Beutel, and testing with external organizations to make sure the system was robust. OpenAI says it now boasts nearly 700 million weekly active users of ChatGPT, 5 million paying business users, and 4 million developers utilizing the API. 'The vibes of this model are really good, and I think that people are really going to feel that,' head of ChatGPT Nick Turley says. Box, a company that helps enterprises manage their computer files, has been testing GPT-5 across a wide variety of data sets in recent weeks. Aaron Levie, the CEO of Box, said previous AI models have failed many of the company's most advanced tests because they struggle to make sense of complex math or logic within long documents. But Levie said GPT-5 is a "complete breakthrough." "The model is able to retain way more of the information that it's looking at, and then use a much higher level of reasoning and logic capabilities to be able to make decisions," Levie told CNBC in an interview. OpenAI is releasing three different versions of the model for developers through its application programming interface, or API. Those versions, gpt-5, gpt-5-mini and gpt-5-nano, are designed for different cost and latency needs. Earlier this week, OpenAI released two open-weight language models for the first time since it rolled out GPT-2 in 2019. Those models were built to serve as lower-cost options that developers, researchers and companies can easily run and customize. But with GPT-5, OpenAI also has a broader consumer audience in mind. The company said interacting with the model feels natural and "more human." Altman said GPT-5 is like having a team of Ph.D.-level experts on hand at any time. "People are limited by ideas, but not really the ability to execute, in many new ways," he said.
