CBCO offers free gas cards to donors in summer blood drive
Helping save a life could put some free gas in your car. Tomorrow the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks is holding a 'Great gas card giveaway.'Every donor gets a 10-dollar gas card to Casey's with a chance at a 'mystery card' that could be as much as 50 or 100 dollars. CBCO representatives say summer is trauma season with an increased need for blood. Supplies are already stretched because CBCO gets 40 percent of donations from high school and college students who are gone on summer break. Being closed for even one day adds to that strain. 'On average, we try to collect 200 blood donations a day to try to meet the need of the 43 area hospitals that we service, so when we're closed on Memorial Day, we lose the ability to collect blood, so we're doing a fun promotion on Friday to get more donors in the door,' said Michelle Teter, CBCO Media Relations Representative. A blood donation takes about an hour and you'll want to bring a photo ID, eat beforehand and be well hydrated. It's also a good idea to make an appointment ahead of time through the CBCO website. Joplin Blood Center of the Ozarks relocates
JOPLIN, Mo. — It's a change for the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks. Its donor center in Joplin closed last week inside Northpark Mall after an almost 20-year run. Monday, it opened at its new location at 2318 Suite-D East 32nd Street. It's the building that sits across the street from the shopping strip where, in part, Big Biscuit and the UPS Store are located. Joplin's Main Street to be revamped with new surface and lights Joplin Blood Center of the Ozarks relocates Recall campaign against Joplin councilman suspended Public joins Rotary Clubs to celebrate International Sculpture Day Over 800 participate in Freeman 5k and Walk for Autism The move has been a couple of years in the making. This facility can handle more donors at once. 'So the purpose for the move was to expand and be able to collect more blood donations at one time. So we have — went from four donor beds to eight donor beds. That is beneficial to meet the local need of the hospitals that we service, so that we can get to the collection we need of 200 blood donations a day,' said Michelle Teter, CBCO Field Representative. Folks interested in donating can check out the organization's locations and hours here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Community Blood Center urges donations during National Blood Donor Month
JOPLIN, Mo. — The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks denotes January as a time to recognize donors — it's National Blood Donor Month. CBCO representatives say blood can be donated every 56 days, up to six times a year – and those donations save lives. Reps tell us blood that has been donated and tested, already on the shelves, are the units that are ready for an emergency. So, donations are constantly needed. Reminding people to donate this month is appropriate because it is a particularly challenging time for blood donations… due to post-holiday fatigue, illnesses going around, and winter weather. 'With the winter weather that we had about two weeks ago, we did have blood drives cancel and we did have donor centers that were closed, so we're already at a loss for the month of January of what we've collected. So, we're trying to amp that back up, get the shelves restocked,' said Michelle Teter, CBCO media relations representative. O-negative and B-positive blood types are needed right now. Donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh 110 pounds, and feel well the day they want to donate. Staff will test their iron levels, blood pressure, and take note of medications to make sure it's safe to donate. It takes about an hour to donate and appointments are encouraged.
