Construction to build "diverging diamond interchange" in Brighton brings new closures, possible delays

Officials with the Michigan Department of Transportation encourage drivers in Brighton to pad their commute with a little extra time as a new phase of construction and new closures come down the pike. "The overall goal of the project is to build what's called a diverging diamond interchange," said Jeff Bigelow, an engineering manager with Great Lakes Engineering Group. "It's reconfiguring the entire interchange, which will reconstruct Grand River Avenue, reconstruct all of the ramps we will be removing and replacing two bridges that carry 1-96 over Grand River." It's a big job, but Bigelow said they're on schedule. The next phase will close parts of Grand River and route traffic toward Spencer Road and other side streets; that phase is set to run through November this year. "We end up with a little bit of everything. There's bridge work, there's freeway work, and of course, the interchange itself," he said. Aaron Jenkins, with the Michigan Department of Transportation, said the closures and reroutes will mean that drivers can expect more time behind the wheel. "Make sure you're giving yourself plenty of time," said Jenkins. "When you're driving through a construction zone, make sure you're not driving distracted." He said driving while distracted can always be potentially dangerous, but especially so in construction zones where there are workers present. "If you're driving 55 miles per hour and you look down at your phone for five seconds, you just went the entire length of a football field blind," Jenkins said. This whole project in Brighton is expected to be completed in 2027.

Interstate 75 to have intermittent lane closures Thursday night at River Rouge

Interstate 75 will have intermittent lane closures Thursday night at the bridge over the River Rouge in Metro Detroit. The Michigan Department of Transportation said motorists in that area should expect delays during the overnight work, which is scheduled for 9 p.m. Thursday through 5 a.m. Friday. This will allow for work on the piers under the bridge. The existing four lanes will be reduced to one lane for up to an hour at a time, multiple times that night, in both the northbound and southbound directions from Schaefer Road to Dearborn Street. When the work is taking place, police vehicles and large road crew trucks will close off the affected lanes. For the latest traffic reports, check the MI Drive website.

696 construction: Bridge demolition finishes early, road re-opens

OAK PARK, MICH (Fox 2) - Originally set to be closed through Monday, the section of I-696 from I-75 to M-10 re-opened Saturday when crews finished work two days early. The Church Street bridge demolition began May 9. The demolition is ongoing on the eastbound side of the road, which will be closed through late 2026, but the westbound side has re-opened. During the closure, crews also did repair work on bridges west of the Church Street plaza. Eastbound 696 was closed in early March for a two-year project to rebuild both sides of the freeway. During the next 24 months, traffic on 696 will only go west. Crews are rebuilding the eastbound side of the highway first before shifting to the westbound side. When they make that move, westbound traffic will be diverted to the eastbound lanes. The Source FOX 2 spoke with the Michigan Department of Transportation for details on the road construction.

Section of Interstate 696 in Oakland County reopens earlier than expected

A portion of westbound Interstate 696 in Oakland County is back open, two days earlier than expected, after crews finished work on a demolition project. A planned closure of westbound I-696 between Interstate 75 and M-10 started on May 9 and was expected to last through May 19. On Saturday, the Michigan Department of Transportation said it was reopened to the public. The closure allowed demolition crews to take down the Church Street plaza bridge, including the breakup of 170 concrete beams. Officials said crews also did repair work on bridges west of the Church Street plaza. Eastbound I-696 from Lahser Road to I-75 will be completely closed until late next year as part of the "Restore the Reuther" project. State officials say the project is expected to wrap up in the fall of 2027.
