Earthquake off Russia's far eastern coast sparks Pacific tsunamis
Tsunami waves were set off across the Pacific, after one of the strongest earthquakes in modern history struck Russia's remote far eastern coast. Nearly two million people in Japan were told to get to safety and waves of up to 1.3 metres were sighted along its Pacific coast. Michiyo Ishida and Dasha Chernyshova report.

Powerful quake off Russia sparks tsunami alerts in several countries
Tsunami waves were set off across the Pacific after one of the strongest earthquakes in modern history struck Russia's remote far eastern coast. The 8.8-magnitude quake off the coast of Kamchatka Peninsula damaged buildings and injured people in its main city about 136km from the epicentre. Japan says China's military activity a 'grave concern' in annual defence white paper
Japan has released its annual defence white paper, calling China's military activity a "grave concern". It highlighted the increasing presence of the Chinese military around Japan in the past year — such as near the disputed Senkaku Islands, which China also claims and calls Diaoyu.
