New Microsoft Emergency Windows 11 Update Fixes Boot Error After May 2025 Patch

Microsoft has released an emergency update for Windows 11 users after quite a few reported a big boot error following the May 2025 security update. The issue began with the KB5058405 update, which left some systems unable to start, displaying a 0xc0000098 error related to the file, as reported by Windows Report. This problem was seen mostly on virtual machines, including those running on Azure and Citrix, but some other users on Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2 were also affected. To address the boot problem, Microsoft has now pushed out the KB5062170 update. This new patch is called a cumulative update, meaning it includes all previous fixes and patches along with the solution for the error. However, users won't find it through Windows Update. Instead, Microsoft says it is only available for manual download from the Microsoft Update Catalog. The company says that those who installed KB5058405 without any issues do not need to install KB5062170. An important point for users to note is that the KB5062170 update only addresses the boot error. There is a probable issue for those using Noto fonts in browsers like Edge or Chrome, where fonts may not render correctly if display scaling is set to 100%. Microsoft says increasing the scaling to 125% or 150% can help until a future fix is released. Anyone whose PC is stuck in a boot loop with the 0xc0000098 message after the May update should download and install KB5062170 from the Microsoft Update Catalog. No restart is needed for those whose systems are running smoothly after the previous update.

Windows 11: Microsoft's Latest Update Breaking Key Feature For Millions Of Users

Microsoft just launched a new update for Windows 11, KB5055523, but it seems it won't install for some users or gets stuck at 20% or 70%. And it's breaking Windows Hello along the way. Windows 11 has another problem. This is a mandatory security patch, as Windows Latest reports, so it's not as if you can skip the update and anyway, it automatically downloads and installs. It's one of the April 2025 update issues, as Windows Latest refers to them. 'In a Feedback Hub post, one user pointed out that KB5055523 downloads, but the installation 'errors out at 100%,' ' the report says. It seems that Microsoft is looking into the issue but there's no solution yet. In terms of what to do if you're affected by this issue, 'In my experience with Windows 11 and helping businesses patch their computers, using the .msu offline installer from Microsoft Update Catalog always works when Windows Update is crashing out for no obvious reason. But if you run into the issues even with the Microsoft Update Catalog, I recommend refreshing Windows 11 with the Update Assistant tool (this will not wipe your data),' the report goes on. Which leads us to Windows Hello. It seems that the new update is breaking Windows Hello in certain circumstances, to wit, if you use a privacy feature to turn off the camera but leave the infrared sensor on. Until now, it was possible to use Face Recognition using the infrared sensor when the main lens of the webcam was covered, which you might do for security reasons. Now, though, once KB5055523 is installed, this doesn't work. 'Windows Latest was able to reproduce the issue on our HP Spectre. We could still sign in using the fingerprint sensor or the four-digit PIN, but it ruins the experience and one of Microsoft's marketing taglines, 'Welcome to Windows,' ' the report says. There are workarounds if Windows Hello isn't working for you. You can use Device Manager to look at the Cameras section. Right-click the RGB camera (which might be called Integrated Camera, HD or WebCam) and disable it. 'Don't turn off the IR camera at this point. Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Windows Hello Face and set up or test facial recognition> This should bring back Windows Hello for some of you,' Windows Latest explains. Microsoft is aware there's an issue, so expect a new update soon.

Sharing workaround for Windows security update issues, Microsoft

INA - SOURCES Microsoft has shared a workaround for users affected by a known issue that blocks Windows security updates from deploying on some Windows 11 24H2 systems. As the company explained when it acknowledged the bug in December, it only occurs when installing Windows 11 from CDs and USB flash drives that also install the October 2024 or November 2024 cumulative updates. "When using media to install Windows 11, version 24H2, the device might remain in a state where it cannot accept further Windows security updates," Microsoft says. "This occurs only when the media is created to include the October 2024, or November 2024, security updates as part of the installation (these updates were released between October 8, 2024 and November 12, 2024)." However, these deployment problems do not impact security updates delivered via Windows Update and the Microsoft Update Catalog or if the installation media comes with security updates released in December 2024 or later. While Redmond said it was working on a fix, it updated the Windows release health dashboard on Thursday to tag the known issue as resolved and advise affected users to reinstall Windows 11, version 24H2, on their systems using media that includes security updates released since December 2024 to avoid experiencing these problems. "To prevent this issue, do not install Windows 11, version 24H2 using media that installs the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates," the company states.
