From The Hindu, August 12, 1975: Sadat opposes move to expel Israel from U.N.

Cairo, Aug. 14: The Egyptian President, Mr. Anwar Sadat, warned Arab nations yesterday that expulsion of Israel from the United Nations could upset the balance in West Asia. In an interview with the Lebanese 'Al Hawadess', carried by the Middle East Information Agency, Mr. Sadat said that all efforts to achieve peace in the area should be exhausted before 'we consider such an initiative.' Mr. Sadat said expulsion of Israel would only release the Jewish nation from international responsibility and result in the United States again championing the Israeli cause. In Mr. Sadat's opinion, any further Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories was a step towards peace and merited the patience of the Arab world. In Jerusalem, Government sources said Israel had decided to ask for further clarifications from Washington on Egypt's terms for a new interim agreement on the Sinai question. The latest Egyptian reaction was relayed from Washington by the Israeli Ambassador, Mr. Simcha Dinitz, who earlier had met the U.S. Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Jordan, Mr. Zeid Rifai, in a cable to the U.N. Secretary-General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, published yesterday, charged the Israeli occupation authorities on the West Bank with violating the sanctity of the Ibrahimi mosque in Hebron. He added that desks, chairs and racks of Jewish books had been introduced, and that 'Jewish feasts and wedding ceremonies involving noisy drinking and dancing have been held in the mosque.'
