Mass. man guilty of cold case murder pleads guilty to extortion, loansharking charges
A Salem man already convicted of killing a Bedford woman in 1971 has pleaded guilty to more charges, including 'loansharking,' Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan's office said Monday. Arthur Massei pleaded guilty to attempted extortion, solicitation to commit usury and threatening to cause physical injury or death, Ryan's office said in a statement. Massei was already convicted on May 14, 2024, of the first-degree murder of Natalie Scheublin at her home decades ago. While in open court, Massei admitted to each of the charges, Ryan's office said. Justice Lynn Rooney sentenced Massei to 15 years in state prison on the charge of attempted extortion; 10 years in state prison on the charge of solicitation to commit usury; and six months in the House of Correction on each of three counts alleging threats to commit a crime. These will run concurrently with the life without parole sentence he is currently serving for Natalie Schueblin's death. The Middlesex Sheriff's Office in Billerica had Massei in custody in October 2022 when Massachusetts State Police and Bedford police detectives found that Massei was sending letters to a woman outside of prison, Ryan's office said. Investigators reviewed Massei's letters, where he asked for help in recruiting someone who would pretend to be a witness for his trial and could falsely testify, Ryan's office said. He also offered to pay $1,000 to someone who could give a fake testimony with instructions about what that person should say. But the letters contained escalating threats from Massei to the woman if she did not do what he said to his satisfaction, Ryan's office said. At one point, Massei told her if she did not do something fast, he would 'be like a bullet heading for you — full steam ahead with no stops until I get on you — you'll see how I feel really soon — good luck," with the letter ending with 'Like a bullet for you.' 'While he was in custody facing a first-degree murder charge, Arthur Massei continued to pursue criminal schemes and to make threats of criminal violence to people in the outside world,' Ryan said in her statement. 'These deliberate and premeditated attempts to obstruct justice are serious crimes in their own right that strike at the very core of our legal system.' Massei also told other people to collect loansharking debts he was owed, Ryan's office said. He directed others to collect his illegal debts, instructing the woman who received one of his letters to approach a loansharking victim as soon as she received her government check, before the victim could spend the money on herself. Mass. man pleads guilty to filming teen girls undressing, showering at Calif. hotel
A Winchester pleaded guilty to filming two 15-year-old girls undressing and showering three separate times at a California hotel while he chaperoned for their soccer game, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan's office said Friday. James Fantini, 56, pleaded guilty to three counts of photographing an unsuspecting person, and of unlawful wiretap in Woburn District Court on Wednesday, Ryan's office said in a statement. Judge Jane Prince sentenced Fantini to two and a half years in the House of Correction, followed by three years of probation, Ryan's office said. While on probation, he must wear a GPS, stay out of Winchester and not have contact with witnesses or anyone under the age of 18. In August 2024, Huntington Beach, California, police detectives sent videos from Fantini's phone to Winchester police and Ryan's office, the statement read. Two months earlier, Fantini was in California chaperoning for the soccer tournament when he tried to film two teenage girls undressing in a hotel bathroom by hiding his cell phone under a baseball hat. The girls immediately contacted the police, who searched Fantini's phone, Ryan's office said. After police looked at his phone, they found more videos of the girls, who said he was a parent in the community. Former Hopkinton deputy police chief convicted of child rape
Former Hopkinton Deputy Chief of Police John "Jay" Porter has been convicted of three charges of rape of a child. He assaulted the student while he was a school resource officer in the town's school system, the Middlesex District Attorney said. The incidents occurred during 2004 and 2005 when the victim was a 15-year-old student at Hopkinton High School. According to the district attorney, Porter assaulted the victim on multiple occasions off school property. "Abused his position of power" "The defendant in this case abused his position of power to take advantage of and manipulate a child to gain her trust before sexually assaulting her on multiple occasions," said District Attorney Marian Ryan. Investigators said during ninth and tenth grade, the victim would often go see Porter for support. "That relationship changed during tenth grade, going from one of a trusted adult and student to a flirtatious then sexual one," the district attorney said. One assault occurred after the victim was excused early from school, and Porter volunteered to drive her home. Later that year, the student was babysitting at Porter's Hopedale home, and he assaulted her when he drove her home to Hopkinton, the district attorney said. Porter was placed on leave from the police department in August of 2022 and indicted on three counts of child rape in the spring of 2023. He was promoted to deputy chief in the fall of 2021 and had been with the Hopkinton Police Department for more than 30 years. Porter is scheduled to be sentenced on June 18.
