MIAA boys' volleyball tournament: Favorites, sleepers, players to watch for Divisions 1-2
Western Mass. powerhouses make up the top pair in Division 2, but will Wayland make a push after last season's finals appearance? Here's a preview of the brackets: Division 1 Favorite : No. 1 Brookline. Sleeper : No. 5 Lexington. Players to watch : outside/setter Branch Barnes (Natick, Sr.), middle Andrew Kurdziel (Needham, Sr.), outside Ale Luciani (Lexington, Sr.), setter Eric Su (Cambridge, Sr.), outside Kris Vaivars (Brookline, Sr.), outside Simon Vardeh (Newton North, Sr.). Best first-round matchup : Thursday, No. 17 Newton South at No. 16 St. John's Prep. Advertisement Longest first-round road trip : Thursday No. 39 Lowell Catholic to No. 26 Barnstable, 98.6 miles. Analysis : While Bay State teams earning the top seeds is was expected, the behemoths of Needham (which was a set away from four-peating last spring) and Newton North (won four of the last five volleyball seasons, girls included) are just the Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. No. 2 Natick has not won since 2007 and top-seeded Brookline is seeking its first title since 1992. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up These four only lost to each other last postseason, and could make up the semifinals by themselves, but some teams sense the door could be open this time around. Middlesex League champion Lexington (5-seed) and No. 7 Cambridge from the Dual County League each took a set against Brookline. Watch out for No. 22 Milford and No. 23 St. John's (Shrewsbury), which are not long removed from semifinal appearances and can be potent if playing their best. Advertisement Division 2 Favorite : No. 1 Agawam. Sleeper : No. 5 Chicopee Comprehensive. Players to watch : outside Aleksandr Bak (West Springfield, Sr.), outside Finn Bell (Wayland, Jr.), libero Tri Duong (Latin Academy, So.), outside Joe Culhane (Agawam, Sr.), outside Zach Kukharchuk (Westfield, Sr.), Noah Johnson (Chicopee Comp., Jr.). Best first-round matchup : Thursday, No. 23 O'Bryant at No. 10 Medfield. Longest first-round road trip : Thursday, No. 37 Lynn Tech to No. 28 Frontier Regional (Deerfield), 108 miles. Analysis : Last season provided fireworks at the end, with reverse sweeps in the semifinals and finals. Of the top three teams, the winner was the one that only had to face one of the other two. It's the same three at the top, but instead of Westfield at No. 1, it's Agawam. Wayland at No. 3 will try to prevent one of the last two champions from doing it again. Chicopee Comp. enters at No. 5 after its sophomore-heavy roster made a stunning run with the 22-seed last postseason. That core returns for its junior year, but with a move up to D1 looming next season. The Colts account for Agawam's only loss on the year. No. 14 Greater Lowell and No. 9 Latin Academy, each which lost to Chicopee Comp last postseason, have strong groups that hope to venture further this time. AJ Traub can be reached at

Nine high school sports takeaways from a Wednesday that showcased some of the state's best strikeout artists

MIAA lacrosse committees The boys' and girls' lacrosse committees met virtually and confirmed the timeline for the upcoming state tournament. Brackets should be released on May 28, tournament games can begin May 29 and will run until the state finals on June 13-14. Tournament director Dan Brothers said the goal is to finish the finals before Father's Day, June 15, but weather could cause postponements that would push some games back to that date. Brothers said the search is ongoing for different neutral sites for the boys' lacrosse championships, but top options such as Bentley, Boston University, Harvard Stadium, and Quincy's Veterans Stadium have been ruled out. It is likely that a high school will once again play host to the boys' lacrosse finals, as Burlington has hosted the past two years. The girls' lacrosse finals will once again be held at Babson. Longtime committee members attended their final meeting. Darrell Benson , the president of the World Series of Lacrosse and a longtime MIAA official, was on his final call with the boys' lacrosse committee. Officials representative Teri Riggs attended her final meeting with the girls' lacrosse committee, and advocated for splitting all JV and varsity games into quarters for injury purposes. Both committees discussed the implementation of a shot clock in upcoming seasons, citing reasons it improves the game. Since the MIAA plays under National Federation of High School rules, the committee will hold off on further discussion until the NFHS addresses shot clock rules this summer. 8. MIAA soccer committee No votes were held at the MIAA soccer meeting, but the committee made it clear they are not interested in a Super 8/Division 1A tournament. Advertisement Canton athletic director and committee chair Danny Erickson , Nipmuch AD Chris Schmidt , Monomoy AD Karen Guillemette , Agawam coach Laura Ramos , and Wayland coach Dave Gavron all expressed a lack of appetite for an additional tournament. 'I think our tournament runs great the way it is,' Erickson said. St. Mary's athletic director Jeff Newhall , the MIAA soccer tournament director, noted that 419 teams participated in the 2024 postseason, with 8,400 players taking the field, 4,600-plus tickets sold, and revenue of about $380,000, leading to a net profit of around $131,000, which was down slightly from the previous year due to the extra expense of holding finals at Worcester State and Curry College instead of Doyle and Manning fields. 'To have 8,400 kids participate in a tournament that makes money, I think is pretty good,' Newhall said. There was lengthy discussion on the lack of officials for sub-varsity games, with new officials liaison Matt DeNapoli stating that almost half the sub-varsity games he schedules have just one official. Several members expressed interest in expanding the 'The older generation of referees would certainly appreciate some help from young legs,' DeNapoli said. Related : The biggest hurdle is liability insurance, as well as some additional costs for Arbiter, the referee assigning portal. 9.
