Heat warning issued for London as temperature, humidity soar

London, Ont.-area residents are in store for yet another round of soaring temperatures this weekend and into Monday, Environment Canada says. The federal weather agency is forecasting temperatures in the low 30s but it could feel closer to 40 C after humidity is factored in. The evenings won't provide much relief, with temperature lows expected around 19 C. The Middlesex-London Health Unit issued an extended heat alert Friday, the fifth one this summer — surpassing the four issued last year. There have also been three air quality advisories this year, but none last year, the health unit said. Health officials are advising people to drink water often, watch for signs of heat exhaustion and check on those at risk for heat illnesses. They also suggest avoiding extreme exercise and limiting exposure to the heat. Signs of heat stroke can include red and hot skin, dizziness and nausea, the health unit said. A number of cooling centres are open to the public in London and Middlesex County, including at the library and community centres in the city. Legionnaires' outbreak in London ends after 70 cases, 3 deaths

A heat map provided by the Middlesex-London Health Unit shows the general area of confirmed cases (home addresses) of Legionnaires' disease reported to the Middlesex-London Health Unit in 2025. The outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease in London has been declared over. Between July 8 and Aug. 6, 2025, three people died and there were a total of 70 confirmed legionella cases, 64 of which had to be hospitalized. According to the Middlesex-London Health Unit, enough time has passed since the last reported case, that the outbreak is considered over. At this time, the health said it can't say where the bacteria came from, despite collecting 12 environmental samples from 26 cooling tower sites — the search for a source will continue. The health unit said there are a few reasons the bacteria may not be found, including, people may have been exposed to more than one source, or cleaning of sites may have happened before testing.

Smoke from Northern Ontario wildfires prompts Special Air Quality Statement for London region

Haze hangs over downtown London, Ont. on July 31, 2025. (Bryan Bicknell/CTV News London) A haze hung over the London region Thursday afternoon as smoke from Northern Ontario wildfires drifted into the area. The poor air quality prompted Environment Canada to issue a Special Air Quality Statement for parts of southwestern Ontario, including London and Middlesex. According to the Middlesex London Health Unit, air quality was expected to reach the high-risk category Thursday afternoon, before improving to low risk levels by Friday. Anyone with respiratory concerns is advised to reduce outdoor activity. In a statement Thursday, the health unit said as smoke increases, health risks also increase. 'You may experience mild symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough,' it said. 'More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough.'
