‘No Kings Day' protest planned in Midland

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID-KPEJ)- This Saturday, June 13th, there will be a 'No Kings Day' protest happening in downtown Midland at Centennial Park, from five to six p.m. The protesters will be meeting by Colorado Street. Organizers said the protest is about peacefully standing against control through violence, fear, and cruelty. The organizers of the protest believe in the freedom of Palestine, the freedom of immigrants, the protection of LGBTQ plus trans lives, and the right to protest and speak freely. 'It is very important to us because we personally have families that are going through this same situation as far as what is going on with immigration right now. I also have friends that are a part of the LGBTQ + community.' 'We are tired of seeing Gaza people being murdered and we are tired of the daily oppression that is going on by the current administration.' 'We are also tired of our voices being pushed to the side and us not being heard. Every American citizen has the right to be able to be heard and to use their voice and the current administration is taking that right away. The protestors said it is very important to have the whole community involved and to come out because it will bring more awareness to the cause and to what is happening in the world and to different groups of people. 'Like he was saying, it affects everyone. No matter what side of the political spectrum you might be on. It really does affect everyone whether you agree to it or not. It does.' 'The main objective is to win over the masses and with the growing solidarity and consolidation of peoples. That is how we can over our daily needs.' While the Midland Police Department did not want to speak on camera, they did release a statement. The city officials said they are aware of the 'No Kings' movement and respect the right of individuals to express their views in a lawful and orderly manner. MPD has also prepared accordingly to ensure the safety of all participants, bystanders, and property. They said while peaceful protests are protected, any acts of vandalism, violence, or civil unrest will be addressed promptly and appropriately with the law. Organizers said they want everyone to come out and let their voices be heard. They said even if you do not know what is happening, to still come out and they will try their best to educate you. Midland woman accused of assaulting man, driving off with him on car hood

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- A Midland woman is facing multiple felony charges after police say she intentionally hit a man with her car, assaulted him, and brought a controlled substance into the Midland County jail. According to the Midland Police Department, officers were called to a reported disturbance around 6:24 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, at a business on the 1300 block of S Midland Drive. The 911 caller alleged that 44-year-old Jacqueline Monique Rios attempted to kill her brother by running him over. When officers arrived on the scene, they observed Rios and the alleged victim screaming at each other in what they described as 'a heated argument.' The man's shirt had reportedly been torn off during the altercation. Despite officers' attempts to separate the individuals and de-escalate the situation, Rios and the man continued 'yelling and provoking' each other. As a result, officials placed Rios in the back of a patrol vehicle to prevent further escalation. The male victim told police he had just been released from jail earlier that day, and Rios had picked him up in Lubbock. During the drive back, he said Rios admitted to using narcotics, which prompted him to exit the vehicle, saying it had upset him. He claimed Rios then drove off with his belongings, prompting him to call a relative to pick him up and return to Midland. The victim said that they later decided to go to Rios's workplace and retrieve the belongings, but another confrontation reportedly occurred after Rios refused to give his belongings back. The man told officers that when he stood in front of Rios's car to prevent her from leaving, she accelerated, hitting him and causing him to fall onto the hood. He said Rios drove northbound on Midland Drive with him clinging to the hood before circling through a convenience store parking lot and returning to her workplace, where he jumped off. Reports showed the victim sustained visible injuries, including bleeding scratches to his face and head, which he claimed Rios inflicted. At the scene, the man and his relative both accused Rios of physically attacking them during the incident. An eyewitness later confirmed seeing Rios driving at a high speed with the man on the hood. The witness also provided cellphone video that allegedly shows Rios assaulting the man while he tries to escape her grasp. When asked who appeared to be the primary aggressor, the witness identified Rios without hesitation. Police said Rios showed signs of stimulant use and admitted to using THC but denied other drug use. Officers noted that Rios appeared to be under the influence of methamphetamine. After initial irritation and hesitation, officers said Rios eventually admitted to driving off while the man was on her hood and confessed to assaulting him after he took her phone. She was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. However, additional charges were added after an officer discovered a THC vape pen in the back seat of the patrol car, an item not present prior to Rios being placed there. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Rios dropping and attempting to hide the vape pen beneath the cage in the car. Rios was then additionally charged with possession of a controlled substance and bringing a prohibited substance into a correctional facility. She was transported to the Midland County Detention Center, where she remains in custody as of Wednesday afternoon and does not have a set bond. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. 19-year-old Midlander arrested in alleged gun threat against girlfriend, friend

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- A 19-year-old Midlander is facing two first-degree felony charges after allegedly threatening his girlfriend and her friend with a handgun during a domestic disturbance last week. According to an arrest affidavit, the incident occurred around 6:22 p.m. on Friday, April 18, at an apartment complex. Officers with the Midland Police Department responded to reports of a disturbance involving two individuals in a physical altercation. Upon arrival, officers made contact with two women outside the apartment. One of them, identified as the suspect's girlfriend, told police that her boyfriend, Tyler E'Angelo Devon Triplett, had attempted to force his way into the apartment by pushing the door open. She said Triplett became upset after she asked him to leave and take his belongings. During the argument, she said he pointed a handgun at both her and her friend before briefly leaving the apartment. Roughly 25 minutes later, Triplett allegedly returned and tried to enter the apartment again using a key. The woman said she attempted to hold the door shut, but Triplett forced it open, striking her in the face in the process. She told officers she wasn't sure if the hit was intentional. She also reported that Triplett began throwing items and creating a mess inside the apartment during the incident. The second woman at the scene corroborated the account, telling officers that Triplett had pointed a handgun at both of them. She noted that the gun had a flashlight attachment, which made it difficult to see the weapon clearly during the argument. During a protective sweep of the apartment, officers located a handgun matching the description provided. The firearm, which lacked a visible serial number, was found on a couch in Triplett's room and had a flashlight attachment. One of the women later confirmed it was the same weapon used in the alleged threat. Triplett was arrested at the scene and charged with 2 counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon/Family Violence, a first-degree felony. He was booked into the Midland County Jail, where he remains in custody as of Monday, with a combined bond of $150,000. Authorities also executed two outstanding municipal warrants for Failure to Appear at the time of Triplett's arrest. This case remains under investigation.
