Midland woman accused of assaulting man, driving off with him on car hood

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- A Midland woman is facing multiple felony charges after police say she intentionally hit a man with her car, assaulted him, and brought a controlled substance into the Midland County jail.
According to the Midland Police Department, officers were called to a reported disturbance around 6:24 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, at a business on the 1300 block of S Midland Drive.
The 911 caller alleged that 44-year-old Jacqueline Monique Rios attempted to kill her brother by running him over. When officers arrived on the scene, they observed Rios and the alleged victim screaming at each other in what they described as 'a heated argument.' The man's shirt had reportedly been torn off during the altercation.
Despite officers' attempts to separate the individuals and de-escalate the situation, Rios and the man continued 'yelling and provoking' each other. As a result, officials placed Rios in the back of a patrol vehicle to prevent further escalation.
The male victim told police he had just been released from jail earlier that day, and Rios had picked him up in Lubbock. During the drive back, he said Rios admitted to using narcotics, which prompted him to exit the vehicle, saying it had upset him. He claimed Rios then drove off with his belongings, prompting him to call a relative to pick him up and return to Midland.
The victim said that they later decided to go to Rios's workplace and retrieve the belongings, but another confrontation reportedly occurred after Rios refused to give his belongings back.
The man told officers that when he stood in front of Rios's car to prevent her from leaving, she accelerated, hitting him and causing him to fall onto the hood. He said Rios drove northbound on Midland Drive with him clinging to the hood before circling through a convenience store parking lot and returning to her workplace, where he jumped off.
Reports showed the victim sustained visible injuries, including bleeding scratches to his face and head, which he claimed Rios inflicted. At the scene, the man and his relative both accused Rios of physically attacking them during the incident.
An eyewitness later confirmed seeing Rios driving at a high speed with the man on the hood. The witness also provided cellphone video that allegedly shows Rios assaulting the man while he tries to escape her grasp. When asked who appeared to be the primary aggressor, the witness identified Rios without hesitation.
Police said Rios showed signs of stimulant use and admitted to using THC but denied other drug use. Officers noted that Rios appeared to be under the influence of methamphetamine. After initial irritation and hesitation, officers said Rios eventually admitted to driving off while the man was on her hood and confessed to assaulting him after he took her phone.
She was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. However, additional charges were added after an officer discovered a THC vape pen in the back seat of the patrol car, an item not present prior to Rios being placed there. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Rios dropping and attempting to hide the vape pen beneath the cage in the car.
Rios was then additionally charged with possession of a controlled substance and bringing a prohibited substance into a correctional facility.
She was transported to the Midland County Detention Center, where she remains in custody as of Wednesday afternoon and does not have a set bond.

Teen's statements on alleged 'f***** up' sex with stepmom greenlit

A Florida teen who claimed he was seduced and had sex with his nurse stepmother while his dad was at work will see his statements allowed in court, a judge ruled. Alexis Yates, 35, of Ocala, has pleaded not guilty to sexual battery on a person 12 to 18 years of age by someone in familial custody. Judge Timothy T. McCourt ruled that statements made by Yates' stepson to a forensic interviewer from the child protection entity Safe Shores can now be used as evidence at her sexual battery trial. The judge said the boy 'did not shy away from making statements that would cast himself in a negative light (i.e., admitting marijuana the night of the incident, and frequently in the months leading up to it) as part of an overall description of the act.' McCourt added that the alleged victim could have minimized his drug use, but did not. In the end, that bolstered the teen's credibility and 'overall reliability.' The judge said: 'While he was not displaying emotions like sadness, the child … nevertheless expressed a mix of emotions consistent with the complex situation in which he then found himself (a situation the child himself referred to as being 'f***ed up').' According to cops, the nurse was arrested last year when she was allegedly caught red-handed by her husband, Frank, sexually assaulting his biological son. Investigators claim they responded to an anonymous tip. The boy — who lives with his mother in Washington, D.C. — told detectives he was visiting his father for the summer when his stepmother sexually assaulted him. 'His father worked late hours as a lineman,' Yates' arrest affidavit states. 'The child victim was hanging out with his stepmother while she was taking care of his younger siblings. … Around 11 p.m., the two of them began relaxing on the couch, 'hitting' a THC cartridge together while playing a video game. Several hours later … they decided to watch a movie.' But the boy and Yates both found the movie boring. They began discussing 'other things' and Yates allegedly made sexual advances toward her stepson. The pair then engaged in several sexual acts, including intercourse. Yates, the boy said, had been dropping sexual jokes and innuendos for the week leading up to the incident. Yates' employer, the Florida Department of Health, issued an emergency suspension order last month after her arrest was first reported. She had been operating under a single-state licence as a registered nurse since 2016. 'While any situation where parents share custody of a child lends itself the possibility of improper influence, there was no evidence that there was any domestic dispute ongoing at the time of this incident,' McCourt said, adding that the teen was a 'particularly intelligent and mature young man.' '(The teen) appeared to be somewhat worldly and familiar with adult things (e.g., he described using a THC vape before having sex with Defendant, and smoking weed 'pretty much every day' he was in Florida),' McCourt added. 'When considered together with the totality of circumstances attendant to this case, consideration of this factor weighs moderately in favour of the reliability of the child's statements.' A police report citing the teen revealed the whopper Yates told her husband. '(The victim) overheard the suspect telling (his) father she was sorry, saying the child victim looks like his father when he was younger,' the police report said. The following day, she told the victim she did not realize 'how big' his penis was, adding: 'It looked like his father's penis with younger skin.' bhunter@ @HunterTOSun

Teacher sued for allegedly giving Denver middle school students marijuana brownies

DENVER (KDVR) — The parents of two 12-year-old students in the Denver Public School district are suing a language arts teacher, accusing her of baking and distributing marijuana-laced brownies to the two children. Sharon Wilson, a 6th-grade language arts teacher at Kepner Beacon Middle School, is accused in a civil lawsuit of placing 'her students in direct danger after she personally baked and distributed home-made brownies laced with tetrahydrocannabinol,' or THC, the psychoactive ingredient of marijuana. Denver Public Schools will not close additional schools in 2025 The lawsuit alleges that Wilson held a writing contest for her 6th-grade class and, instead of providing a 'typical prize,' she gave them the laced brownies on June 4, 2024. The lawsuit says that the teacher admitted to 'making the brownies for' the two minors. The lawsuit alleges the two children ate the brownies and soon thereafter, 'began to feel sick and strange with symptoms including: difficulty walking, difficulty focusing, and overall feeling like something was happening to their bodies that they did not understand.' Both students required help making it out to their parents' vehicles at the end of the day, the complaint alleges. The lawsuit states that one of the children's mothers first thought her child had eaten peanuts, resulting in an allergic reaction, and texted Wilson to get more information. '(Wilson) responded via text message, admitting she did make the brownies because (the students) won (Wilson's) contest,' the lawsuit states. A screenshot of the text message exchange is included in the lawsuit, showing that the mother said her child was exhibiting 'red eyes' and dizziness, and asking what ingredients were in the brownies. Denver changes its mind and will keep center that aids homeless open afterall 'They are from scratch,' Wilson responded, in part. 'Maybe it is the unsweetened chocolate? I also use sugar, flour, Mexican vanilla, salt, baking soda, eggs.' 'Another student had one too, they made the most words with Greek and Latin roots, so they won the prize,' Wilson continued in her text with the parent. 'The other student hasn't reported any allergy symptoms. I'm so sorry, it sounds like an allergic reaction.' Both students were independently taken to urgent care that day, according to the lawsuit. Blood tests reportedly showed that each child had THC levels in their system. The Colorado Bureau of Investigations reportedly tested the brownies and found they did have marijuana. Denver Public Schools provided a statement about the teacher to FOX31 on Thursday. Middle school teacher Sharon Wilson was placed on paid administrative leave at the end of the 2023-2024 school year. This is standard procedure for Denver Public Schools until a matter is resolved. Wilson separated from DPS in August 2024, before the start of the 2024-2025 school year.
