Fleeing Miami-Dade man opens fire on FHP trooper on I-95 in St. Lucie
FORT PIERCE — A fleeing suspect shot at a Florida Highway Patrol deputy early this morning after being stopped on Interstate 95 at Midway Road.
The gunman, a 29-year-old man from Miami Gardens being sought on an active warrant, was taken into custody after a brief standoff with police and taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, FHP said.
No other injuries were reported.
The shootout closed Interstate 95 northbound from St. Lucie West Boulevard to Midway Road.
The incident occurred at about 5:32 a.m. when Trooper J. Torres located a 2024 silver Mitsubishi Outlander heading north on I-95 at Midway Road (mile marker 126) and identified it as a vehicle that had fled deputies in Hillsborough County. Torres attempted to stop the car, but the driver fled, FHP said.
Torres executed an immobilization maneuver that stopped the Mitsubishi. The man then opened fire on Torres, who called for assistance. After a standoff, the man was detained and taken to the hospital.
The Miami Gardens man was not identified, and charges have not been disclosed. The road was still closed as of 10 a.m. and drivers are advised to exit I-95 at St. Lucie West Boulevard and re-enter at Midway Road. Motorists should expect heavy delays in the area.
No further information was available this morning.
