Fleeing Miami-Dade man opens fire on FHP trooper on I-95 in St. Lucie

FORT PIERCE — A fleeing suspect shot at a Florida Highway Patrol deputy early this morning after being stopped on Interstate 95 at Midway Road.
The gunman, a 29-year-old man from Miami Gardens being sought on an active warrant, was taken into custody after a brief standoff with police and taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, FHP said.
No other injuries were reported.
The shootout closed Interstate 95 northbound from St. Lucie West Boulevard to Midway Road.
The incident occurred at about 5:32 a.m. when Trooper J. Torres located a 2024 silver Mitsubishi Outlander heading north on I-95 at Midway Road (mile marker 126) and identified it as a vehicle that had fled deputies in Hillsborough County. Torres attempted to stop the car, but the driver fled, FHP said.
Torres executed an immobilization maneuver that stopped the Mitsubishi. The man then opened fire on Torres, who called for assistance. After a standoff, the man was detained and taken to the hospital.
The Miami Gardens man was not identified, and charges have not been disclosed. The road was still closed as of 10 a.m. and drivers are advised to exit I-95 at St. Lucie West Boulevard and re-enter at Midway Road. Motorists should expect heavy delays in the area.
No further information was available this morning.

Wanted man from Miami Gardens arrested after chase and shootout on I-95 in St. Lucie County, FHP says

A Miami Gardens man with an active warrant led the Florida Highway Patrol on a brief chase early Sunday morning before ending it with a shootout on Interstate 95 in St. Lucie County, shutting the interstate for hours. According to FHP, a Be On the Lookout (BOLO) alert was sent out for a 2024 silver Mitsubishi Outlander that had previously fled from Hillsborough County deputies, and its driver -- only identified as a 29-year-old man from Miami Gardens -- had an active warrant. Just after 5:30 a.m., FHP Sgt. J. Torres saw the SUV traveling north on I-95 around Mile Marker 126 near Midway Road in Port St. Lucie and verified that it was the vehicle that the BOLO alert had mentioned. Torres tried to conduct a traffic stop; however, the SUV failed to stop and continued driving, prompting a pursuit, FHP said. After a short chase, Torres conducted a PIT maneuver to stop the SUV. Once the vehicle stopped, FHP said the driver began shooting at Torres and multiple agencies were called in to assist with the situation. Following a brief standoff, the driver was taken into custody before being transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. FHP said no officers were injured during the incident and that northbound I-95 had been shut down for the investigation. At this time, authorities have not revealed further details regarding the man's identity or other circumstances surrounding the incident, including why he had an active warrant. According to CBS News affiliate WPEC in West Palm Beach, northbound I-95 has since reopened.

Runaway Zebra Recaptured in Tennessee County

The search for a runaway pet zebra that had evaded capture for nearly a week in Rutherford County, Tenn., has come to an end. The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office, which had been searching for the animal that residents named Ed, said in a statement on Sunday that the zebra had been recaptured and returned to its owner. In a video the sheriff's office posted on Facebook, the zebra's head and legs can be seen dangling from inside a net as it spun in the sky while being airlifted by a yellow helicopter. The authorities said that the intrepid zebra was found was in a pasture near Interstate 24. The owner of the zebra — whose identity has not been released — got the animal on May 30 and had it for less than a day before it escaped the next morning, the sheriff's office said in an earlier statement. How the zebra escaped or why the man owned it was still not immediately clear, but dispatchers received a report on May 31 that a zebra had been spotted darting in traffic on Interstate 24. 'This is the first zebra to escape in Rutherford County as far as I know in the 43 years I lived here,' Lisa Marchesoni, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, said on Sunday. He had escaped into a wooded area and disappeared until it was spotted Thursday, the authorities said. On Friday, a police drone spotted the zebra dashing through a field near Christiana, a community about 40 miles south of Nashville. Drivers on Interstate 24 also saw him scamper across east and westbound lanes on Saturday, the sheriff's office said. On Sunday morning, deputies worked with the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to find the zebra. With several sightings of the zebra in the area, social media lit up with memes and images generated by artificial intelligence of the animal, including one that dressed him in a Middle Tennessee State University hat and T-shirt.
