Championship outright odds, season preview and tips

One week after the start of the new League One and League Two seasons, the Championship returns with a blockbuster clash on Friday August 8, when newly promoted Birmingham face Ipswich Town, who were relegated from last season's Premier League, at St Andrew's (kick-off, 8pm). Both clubs feature at the top of the outright betting for the 2025-26 Championship title, along with the likes of Southampton, Sheffield United and Coventry City. The Championship has a reputation for being wonderfully unpredictable so, with that said, our expert tipster has tried to pick out the value from this season's outright markets, including the top goalscorer and relegation betting. In a division as unpredictable as England's second tier, it seems counter-intuitive to back the outright favourites but Ipswich look a decent price at 3/1. The Suffolk side recruited smartly before their return to the Premier League last year, building a strong Championship squad in preparation for a potential relegation. That means they have not lost too many players beyond Liam Delap – who was not at the club for their last promotion anyway – and midfielder Sam Morsy. Azor Matusiwa is an eye-catching defensive capture from Rennes, while 40-year-old Ashley Young adds experience and loanee Cedric Kipre further improves their options at the back. A record-breaking move for Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney could yet be on the cards, and the squad is littered with players who excel at this level, such as Jack Clarke, Sammie Szmodics, Wes Burns, Leif Davis and Jacob Greaves. Most importantly, though, the club have kept hold of manager Kieran McKenna, who has already led the Tractor Boys to two promotions during his tenure – and there is no reason why he cannot do so again in 2025-26 with Ipswich in a strong position to challenge for the title. Championship 2025-26 outright tip 1: Ipswich to win Championship @ 3/1 Go to site > Ivanovic can fire Millwall to new heights From last season's defeated play-off finalists Sheffield United to runaway League One winners Birmingham, there are a few teams who catch the eye to be promoted from the Championship, but the market is wise to most. Millwall, however, could be in for a decent season and are worth a bet simply to make the top half at 11/10. The Lions finished last season with five wins in their last seven league games, securing eighth place under Alex Neil. And there is no reason they cannot emulate or potentially even improve on that. Young striker Josh Coburn has joined permanently from Middlesbrough, while Luton wide player Alfie Doughty, who previously impressed in the Premier League, is another smart signing. They should also get even more out of 20-year-old forward Mihailo Ivanovic, who offers decent each-way value to be Championship top scorer at 22/1. Ivanovic netted 12 league goals in 37 league appearances last term and 10 of those strikes came under the stewardship of Neil. He will surely improve this season and could be in the mix. Championship 2025-26 outright tip 2: Millwall top-half finish @ 11/10 with Sky Bet Preston and Tigers look endangered At the other end of the table, Sheffield Wednesday's off-field problems mean they have been installed as 1/4 favourites for relegation, so it is really a case of settling on which sides could occupy the other two places. Oxford United have retained key players such as Mark Harris and Cameron Brannagan and do not look any weaker than last term, when seven sides finished below them. And while Charlton look like the most likely of the newly promoted sides to go down, they have done some good business, capturing prolific striker Charlie Kelman from QPR, plus Rob Apter and experienced defender Sonny Carey from Blackpool. It could therefore be worth taking a look at Hull City at 11/4 and Preston at 9/2. Hull only survived on goal difference last season and were the division's lowest scorers with 44 goals. Their attacking output will not be helped by the loss of last term's top scorer Joao Pedro, who has moved to Atletico San Luis, while they are weakened at the back by the departures of Alfie Jones and Sean McLoughlin. New manager Sergej Jakirovic is the kind of attacking, progressive coach the club needs, but he may lack the players he needs to implement his style and, of course, lacks experience of managing in the Championship. As for Preston, they seem to have gone under the radar for relegation despite finishing 20th in the Championship last season, just one point above the drop zone. It feels as though they have gone backwards under Paul Heckingbottom and there is every chance they could get sucked into the battle at the bottom, especially as last season's top scorer Emil Riis Jakobsen has departed for Bristol City.

Millwall want to keep best players

Millwall expect Japhet Tanganga and Mihailo Ivanovic to remain at the club this summer and are not looking to sell any of their current players, head coach Alex Neil has said. Both players have been linked with moves away from the Championship club but Neil said he did not pay too much attention to the speculation. George Saville, George Honeyman, Aaron Connolly and Murray Wallace have departed the club so far in the off-season. Josh Coburn and Zak Sturge's loan moves from Middlesbrough and Chelsea respectively have been made permanent, while the Lions have also signed goalkeeper Max Crocombe from Burton Albion. When asked if Tanganga, who made 43 appearances in all competitions for Millwall last season, would still be at the club for their Championship opener at Norwich City on Saturday, 9 August, Neil said "I hope so". "I don't think there's anything at the moment that suggests otherwise for us. "I know there's a lot of speculation, as there always is, whether it be Japhet, or Mihailo [Ivanovic] or anybody else, there's little bits that are doing the rounds," he told BBC Radio London. "But we're focused on trying to be the best version of ourselves in terms of trying to retain our best players. "We're not naïve. We're not actively looking to sell anyone. We want to grow and build on this season. "But equally, if somebody comes in with offers that are way beyond what we would maybe have on a valuation of a player, then certain decisions may well get made." Millwall sign Chelsea's Sturge for undisclosed fee Josh Coburn reflects on his time at Middlesbrough Millwall sign Boro's Coburn for 'club record' fee Sturge a 'really good young and upcoming left-back' Sturge, 21, made five appearances on loan from Chelsea at the back end of last season. He has signed a "long-term" contract and Neil believes he can provide strong competition with Joe Bryan at left-back. "He broke in towards the tail end of last year and I think with every game he played he gained confidence, he gained understanding," Neil said. "He's good on the ball, he's athletic, he's got a good manner about him – he's a nice lad – he trains hard. "I think what we'll try and do is give him more game exposure and get more game understanding and experience into him. And I think when he puts those bits together then we're hopeful we've got a really good young and upcoming left-back." Millwall signed Coburn in a club-record deal from Boro after the striker formed a strong partnership with Ivanovic and scored five goals in 21 games last season. "He's got different qualities and strengths to all the other forwards we've got. He's more of a target, he can take the ball on, he can score a goal, he can run," Neil said. "Our job is to try and help him put his game together in terms of his link-up [play], his timing of his runs, his effectiveness in front of goal, and I think when he does that he'll be a real force to be reckoned with in the Championship." Neil said Millwall planned to make further signings before the season kicks off next month. He warned all players would need to earn their place in the team, regardless of their potential or how much money had been paid to bring them to the club. "It's a 50:50 relationship. We will spend a lot of time trying to develop and help you, we'll teach you in terms of tactics and work on your technique. And the other 50% has got to come from them," he added. "Nobody gets a free ride. Nobody gets in the team because we've signed you to try to make you better. "Your job is to turn up every day, you perform, you try as hard you can. That doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to play well every game, but what we're not going to do is bring you in and, if you play one or two bad games, discard you."
