Alexander Rossi sees Indy 500 hopes go up in flames on pit road
IndyCar driver Alexander Rossi was having an incredible day at the Indianapolis 500 as he was competing toward the front of the pack, but it all ended in the blink of an eye. On Lap 73, Rossi's vehicle began to leak fluid from the back. It was causing problems for Alex Palou, who was immediately behind Rossi's No. 20. Rossi entered the pits and was told the crew would take a minute to figure out what was going on with his car. Rossi pulled into his pit box, and his car was covered in flames. He rushed out of his cockpit as officials came over to extinguish the fire. Rossi got out of the car and threw his gloves down to the ground. Rossi's fueler Mike Miller needed to be attended to as well, as he still had flames on him in the pits. He appeared to be OK as the issue was being taken care of. "Thankfully Mike's OK too. It's always a terrible situation and it's so disappointing," Rossi told FOX from his pit box. "That was such a phenomenal racecar, and the team made a great decision to stay out there when that first split happened with the strategy, and everything we were doing on the 20 Java House stand was awesome. That's what's so painful about this day is you got to have so many things go right. It's just disappointing because it's another opportunity gone." Rossi said the gearbox's temperature started to increase as the race went on, and he believed that was at least one of the reasons why his vehicle went up in flames. Rossi won the race in 2016. He finished fourth in 2024 and fifth in 2023 and 2022. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Florida lands former Arkansas PG Boogie Fland
May 20 - Former Arkansas point guard Boogie Fland committed to reigning national champion Florida on Tuesday. Fland and his representatives, who include Florida alumnus Mike Miller, confirmed the transfer with ESPN. Fland attended this month's draft combine before withdrawing from 2025 NBA Draft consideration last week. He averaged 13.5 points, 5.1 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 21 games (18 starts) as a freshman for coach John Calipari's Razorbacks in 2024-25. Fland missed more than two months of the season with an injury to his right hand. He faced the Gators once, tallying 15 points, four assists and three rebounds in a 71-63 loss on Jan. 11 in Fayetteville, Ark. A five-star recruit and McDonald's All-American, the 6-foot-2 Fland originally committed to Kentucky when Calipari still was the head coach. He fills a vacancy with coach Todd Golden's Gators, with point guard Walter Clayton Jr. out of eligibility along with fellow backcourt starters Will Richard and Alijah Martin. --Field Level Media

40+ homes evacuated in Meyersdale; flooding causing issues
Nearly 50 homes in a low-lying area of the Meyersdale area were evacuated Tuesday as the fast-rising Casselman River hit flood stage, flooding basements and stranding motorists, officials said. The river winds its way through a flood-prone area northwest of town near the Somerset County Fairgrounds – but strong, steady rain brought the Casselman's levels up faster than usual – to 13 feet, 8 inches as of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Meyersdale Fire Chief Mike Miller said. That's two feet above the river's flood stage with no sign of receding, he said. "We've seen it this bad before – but things are terrible right now," Miller said, noting the community dealt with similar flooding approximately 25 years ago. "I don't know if I've ever seen the river rise this fast." No injuries were reported as of 5:30 p.m. The region received 4.86 inches of rain Tuesday – on top of previous rainfall, he said. As of 5:30 p.m., 33 basements were being pumped or set to be pumped out north of town and in the northern corner of Meyersdale, he said. Firefighters also had to deal with a dozen cars throughout the day that became disabled by floodwater – putting motorists and emergency responders lives at risk. "Our advice to people is to stay home and stay safe right now," he said. "Please don't try to drive through water." The nearby boroughs of Salisbury and Garrett were also dealing with stormwater flooding, Miller said. Fire departments from all three communities were receiving assistance from fellow departments, including Boswell, Sipesville and Northern Regional Fire Department. Somerset County Emergency Management officials were also on scene. Miller praised staff from all of those agencies for their tireless efforts in the Myersdale area Tuesday, saying it's required a broad, coordinated response. Miller was awaiting an update from the National Weather Service on Tuesday to determine the outlook for when the Casselman might level off and begin to recede – and how much more its levels could rise first. "If it goes up another foot, we're going to have first floor flooding in some (of the already evacuated) residences," Miller said. Emergency Management Director Joel Landis said shelters have already been established for local residents evacuated by the storm.

Ex-Arkansas PG Boogie Fland exits draft, looking for new school
May 14 - Former Arkansas point guard Boogie Fland has withdrawn from the NBA draft, ESPN reported, citing his agent Mike Miller. Fland starred for the Razorbacks over the season's first 18 games but he injured his right hand on Jan. 11 and struggled during the next two games before being shut down. He missed more than two months and returned to play as a reserve in the NCAA Tournament but the injury affected his shooting and he averaged just 4.0 points on 4-of-18 shooting in three games. He entered both the NBA draft and the transfer portal after a season in which he had averages of 13.5 points and 5.1 assists in 21 games (18 starts). Fland was projected as a second-round selection in the NBA draft after once being viewed as a potential lottery pick. He was at the NBA combine in Chicago when he withdrew. Multiple reports have Fland interested in joining the national champion Florida Gators, who need a point guard after star Walter Clayton Jr. finished his eligibility. Miller, Fland's agent, is a former Florida star as well as a former long-time NBA player. Fland was a five-star recruit and McDonald's All-American who committed to Kentucky while John Calipari was head coach. When Calipari departed the Wildcats for the Arkansas gig, Fland requested his release from Kentucky and later committed to Calipari and the Razorbacks. Arkansas reached the Sweet 16 this season while going 22-14. --Field Level Media

End of the line: Ames school bus drivers to be laid off in May
AMES, Iowa — According to the Iowa Workforce Development website, bus drivers in Ames will be laid off in May after the Ames School Board approved a contract with another school transportation company. Durham School Services has provided transportation services to Ames students for the last 15 years. In March, the Ames Community School District approved a new contract with First Student, which is another school transportation company. According to the Iowa Workforce Development website, 62 Durham employees in Ames will be laid off on May 31st. Iowa State Fair reveals free entertainment lineup First Student provides services to other school districts in Iowa, including Ankeny and Council Bluffs. Both of these districts provided positive feedback to the Ames School Board. This is the first time since 2015 that the district has requested proposals for transportation services. Both Durham and First Student submitted proposals. At the school board meeting in March, school board members said their decision came down to the price tag. First Student offered a proposal that was estimated to be $1 million less than the current Durham services. Mike Miller is a veteran bus driver in Ames who spoke during the meeting. He said, 'I have been recruited last year by Gilbert, Nevada, Ballard, [and] schools down in Des Moines, because I'm a 15-year bus driver and I know how to do my job. I did not go to those schools, even though I did look at them, because I live in Ames. I want to be a bus driver here in Ames.' Anna Lam, the External Communications Manager for Durham School Services, told WHO 13 News, 'In March, we were made aware by the school district that they had chosen to move forward with a new transportation provider. All of the drivers that meet employment standards will either stay in Ames or transfer with us.' Durham provides transportation to six other school districts in Iowa. Lam confirmed that they are not expecting layoffs at any other location. The Ames Community School District did not respond to a request for comment.
