Cole Strange is Falling Behing in Patriots' OTAs

Cole Strange is Falling Behing in Patriots' OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New England Patriots are taking a serious approach to the 2025 season with competitions lining up on both sides of the ball. Advertisement The offensive line is an area that the Patriots needed to address after last season's latest disastrous performance. New England added some new veterans and used three picks on the offensive line, including drafting former LSU Tigers star Will Campbell with the No. 4 overall pick. While reports are positive for Campbell, there is one former first-round pick of New England who is failing to exceed expectations. Cole Strange has not only not locked up the starting left guard position, but he is reportedly letting other competitors look better for the position. Former New York Jet Wes Schweitzer has had some good looks in OTAs for the Patriots. ESPN reporter Mike Reiss says that Tyrese Robinson has been taking multiple first-team reps in practice. Advertisement This is bad news for Strange, who was the Patriots' first-round pick (No. 29 overall pick) in the 2022 NFL Draft. Strange is in the final year of his rookie contract while the Patriots declined his fifth-year option. He is on the road of being considered as a bust for the Patriots. © David Butler II-Imagn Images In 2022, Strange started and played in all 17 games for the Patriots posting an overall grade of 54.6 by Pro Football Focus. Since then, Strange's career has been derailed by injuries. In 2023, Strange played and started 10 games and only played three games (two starts) last season. There is still a great opportunity for Strange to re-enter the starting lineup. He is, however, off to a poor start if he is allowing a much older veteran in Schweitzer and a player who only played in the regular-season finale last year in Robinson to take his reps. NFL star gets major health news after blood clots cut his 2024 season short

After having his 2024 season shortened due to recurring blood clots, one New England Patriots defensive star is set to return to the field. Christian Barmore, the Patriots starting defensive tackle, has been cleared for a return to football activities. The player told reporters that he plans on being a full participant when voluntary organized activities begin next week. He also says he'll be ready for the September 7 season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders. 'Yeah. That's the goal. I just have to keep following the medical team, but everything is looking really well,' Barmore told reporters (via ESPN's Mike Reiss). Barmore played in just four games for the Patriots last season - missing every game up until Week 11 against the Los Angeles Rams. He played in three more contests - with his last one coming on December 15 against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 15. After that game, his season ended as he was placed on the non-football illness list. But since then, Barmore has been hard at work in his attempt to get back into playing shape. Barmore didn't answer a question on if doctors know what led to the recurrence of his blood clots, but revealed the toll the diagnosis took on him. 'It was one of the hardest times. I felt like I did everything in my power, wanting to come back,' he said. 'I don't want to ever be in that situation again, or anybody in the world to go through that. That stuff was no joke. It was a hard challenge.' Next season, he should form half of an amazing interior defensive line duo alongside Milton Williams - who the Patriots just acquired in free agency from the Philadelphia Eagles. 'That's my guy,' Barmore said before revealing that the two line-mates have started a friendly competition between themselves. 'We see who's the first one in the weight room. Who is the first one in the meeting room. We've been always going at it,' Barmore said. 'He makes me work hard. He's a hell of a worker, hell of a guy, hell of a player.'

Tentative timeframe for Patriots' 2025 Hall of Fame decision revealed

Tentative timeframe for Patriots' 2025 Hall of Fame decision revealed The New England Patriots are expecting to announce the 2025 Patriots Hall of Fame inductee early next week, per ESPN's Mike Reiss. The finalists for the Patriots' 2025 Hall of Fame class are wide receiver Julian Edelman, guard Logan Mankins and kicker Adam Vinatieri. All three played a vital role at different junctures of a Patriots dynasty that spanned nearly two decades. Vinatieri kicked two game-winning field goals in Super Bowls, and Mankins was one of the greatest offensive linemen in franchise history. Meanwhile, Edelman is a former Super Bowl MVP and one of the greatest playoff performers of all time. It almost feels unfair that only one of the nominees will get in this year considering all three players are worthy of an induction at some point. They are all named All-Dynasty players in New England given their many on-field contributions to the team. The winner will clearly be deserving of the honor, with hope that the other two players waiting in the wings will be right on their heels. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Report: Former Wisconsin assistant 'in talks' with NFL team for next coaching role

ESPN's Mike Reiss reported on Sunday that former Wisconsin assistant Thomas Brown remains 'in talks' to potentially join the Patriots coaching staff. Brown had recently interviewed for the team's offensive coordinator position under new head coach Mike Vrabel. While the team hired Josh McDaniels, it still appears interested in adding Brown to its staff. Related: Former Wisconsin quarterback 'expected to move on' from Dallas Cowboys coaching staff 'Brown opened last season as the Bears' passing game coordinator, and the Patriots could potentially look towards that type of role for him, in addition to working with a specific position group,' Reiss wrote. Brown has led coaching headlines over the last few months. The former Wisconsin running backs coach (2014) began the 2024 season as the Bears' passing game coordinator. He was promoted to offensive coordinator on Nov. 12 after Shane Waldron's firing, then soon received another promotion to interim head coach on Nov. 29 after the team dismissed Matt Eberflus. The Bears went 1-4 to close the season under his watch — that win coming in Week 18 against the Green Bay Packers. The team finished the season 5-12 and in last place in the NFC North. The longtime assistant coach interviewed for the Bears head coaching vacancy before Ben Johnson's hiring. He then had the mentioned interview for the Patriots' OC job, which went to McDaniels. '[Thomas] Brown is still in talks with the #Patriots to potentially join the staff in a different role,' per @MikeReiss. Brown, who has coached both RBs and TEs in his career, interviewed for NE's OC role in each of the last two offseasons. He quickly rose up the Bears' ranks… — Mike Kadlick (@mikekadlick) January 26, 2025 Reiss' reporting indicates that Brown could still hold a prominent role on the Patriots coaching staff, if the move is finalized. Brown coached Wisconsin's running backs in 2014 under then-head coach Gary Andersen. He oversaw a record-breaking season from star Melvin Gordon: 343 carries, 2,587 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns. Many statistics even point to Gordon's 2014 campaign being better than Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty's Heisman-finalist 2024 season. Brown left the Badgers in 2015 to coach running backs at Georgia. He was then the offensive coordinator at Miami from 2016-18, running backs coach at South Carolina in 2019, running backs coach for the Los Angeles Rams from 2020-21, tight ends coach for the Rams in 2022 and offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers in 2023. He is one of several former Wisconsin coaches in the headlines. Scott Tolzien just left the Dallas Cowboys' staff, while we all await what's next for program legend Jim Leonhard.
