NFL star gets major health news after blood clots cut his 2024 season short
After having his 2024 season shortened due to recurring blood clots, one New England Patriots defensive star is set to return to the field.
Christian Barmore, the Patriots starting defensive tackle, has been cleared for a return to football activities.
The player told reporters that he plans on being a full participant when voluntary organized activities begin next week. He also says he'll be ready for the September 7 season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders.
'Yeah. That's the goal. I just have to keep following the medical team, but everything is looking really well,' Barmore told reporters (via ESPN's Mike Reiss).
Barmore played in just four games for the Patriots last season - missing every game up until Week 11 against the Los Angeles Rams.
He played in three more contests - with his last one coming on December 15 against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 15.
After that game, his season ended as he was placed on the non-football illness list.
But since then, Barmore has been hard at work in his attempt to get back into playing shape.
Barmore didn't answer a question on if doctors know what led to the recurrence of his blood clots, but revealed the toll the diagnosis took on him.
'It was one of the hardest times. I felt like I did everything in my power, wanting to come back,' he said.
'I don't want to ever be in that situation again, or anybody in the world to go through that. That stuff was no joke. It was a hard challenge.'
Next season, he should form half of an amazing interior defensive line duo alongside Milton Williams - who the Patriots just acquired in free agency from the Philadelphia Eagles.
'That's my guy,' Barmore said before revealing that the two line-mates have started a friendly competition between themselves.
'We see who's the first one in the weight room. Who is the first one in the meeting room. We've been always going at it,' Barmore said.
'He makes me work hard. He's a hell of a worker, hell of a guy, hell of a player.'

June 6 - The New York Knicks plan to formally request permission to interview Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd for their coaching vacancy, NBA insider Marc Stein reported Friday. The Knicks fired head coach Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday despite reaching the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years. Kidd, 52, has compiled a 179-149 record (.546) in four seasons with the Mavericks, including 39-43 in 2024-25. He took Dallas to the 2024 NBA Finals, losing to the Boston Celtics in five games. BREAKING NEWS Dallas Stars fire Pete DeBoer despite team's impressive season
The Dallas Stars have fired head coach Pete DeBoer after three seasons in charge, with the Texas powerhouse making the Western Conference Finals in each of those years. DeBoer is a longtime NHL head coach, who achieved plenty of success leading the Stars' bench but failed to get the team to the Stanley Cup Finals in a trio of direct attempts. The Stars were eliminated the last two postseasons by the Edmonton Oilers, with a defeat to the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023. The 56-year-old DeBoer has 18 seasons of NHL experience as a head coach and has never won a Stanley Cup. He led the New Jersey Devils in 2012 and the San Jose Sharks in 2016 to his only pair of Stanley Cup Finals as a bench boss, where his team lost to the Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins respectively. DeBoer's last six seasons leading a team to the playoff have ended with an elimination in the conference finals, dating back to the 2019 playoffs with the Sharks. The timing from the Stars leaves their post as the only head-coaching vacancy. In the last few days, the Penguins hired Dan Muse to heir helm and the Boston Bruins scooped up Marco Sturm, with DeBoer being a more impressive candidate than either of those two men. Unless the Stars hire a standing NHL head coach, which could happen with one of the deepest rosters in hockey, DeBoer will have to wait a season for his next bench leadership role.

June 6 - Miami murals honoring baseball trailblazers Jackie Robinson and Minnie Minoso were defaced with swastikas and racist slurs this week. The vandalism in the city's Overtown neighborhood was reported Monday to police, who told The Athletic on Friday that they are investigating the incident as a hate crime. The defacements of the murals in Dorsey Park included swastikas painted over the players' faces and a racial slur scrawled on Robinson's image. "This was an act of hate, but it will not define us," Kyle Holbrook, the artist who painted the mural in 2011 as part of the MLK Mural Project, told the Miami Herald. "This mural was born from a community's pride, history, and power. We will restore it -- stronger, bolder, and with even more purpose. Black history is American history.
