Trump Signing Bill To Block California's EV Mandate: Live Updates
President Donald Trump is set to sign three congressional resolutions on Thursday to block California's electric vehicle sales mandates and diesel engine rules. The resolution will bar the Golden State's plan, which has also been adopted by 11 other states, to end the sale of gasoline-only vehicles by 2035. It will also repeal the mandate that at least 80% of vehicles in California be electric by the same deadline. Several auto industry leaders are set to attend the bill signing at the White House, officials said. What To Know The signing of the bill is a major win for automakers, including General Motors and Toyota, who heavily lobbied against the mandates. Meanwhile, it is a major blow for environmental groups, and the state of California, who have argued the rules are needed to cut pollution and encourage cleaner vehicles. American Petroleum Institute President and CEO Mike Sommers thanked the president and Congress for "delivering on their promise to put an end to these extreme mandates and ensure every American can choose the vehicle that's best for them." Trump will also sign a resolution to rescind the EPA's 2023 approval of California's plans to require zero-emission heavy-duty trucks, and another resolution to require low-nitrogen oxide for heavy-duty highway and off-road vehicles. Hope for a Trump Energy Boom Is Marred by Anxiety About Tariffs
Tariff threats. Growing uncertainty about the economy. And a push for much lower oil prices. For all of their bravado about U.S. energy dominance and enthusiasm for deregulation, American energy executives are beginning to worry about President Trump's agenda. Their concerns crept into conversations in hotel meeting rooms and over private meals this week in Houston, where industry magnates gathered for their most important annual conference. Surely, some hoped, the president would cut oil and gas companies a break on tariffs. Surely, the administration was not serious about pushing oil prices down another 25 percent. Surely, the turmoil of the last two months would soon pass. And just as soon as those glimmers of frustration or doubt slipped out, they were gone, overshadowed by praise for Mr. Trump, his cabinet and the administration's aim to unshackle American energy companies — at least the ones in the business of producing oil, natural gas and nuclear power. Such is the energy industry's delicate dance these days. Companies are trying to balance fighting for their interests, which often include free trade, with a strong desire not to offend the president. The oil and gas industry spent more than $75 million to elect Mr. Trump. 'We're hopeful that as we continue these conversations on trade, that the energy dominance agenda becomes more important than the tariff agenda,' Mike Sommers, chief executive of the American Petroleum Institute, the oil and gas industry's main trade group, said in an interview at the conference, CERAWeek by S&P Global. Americans trust Trump on immigration, economy over environment, health care: Poll
A recent YouGov survey found that a majority of Americans, 52 percent, have high levels of trust in President Trump's ability to manage immigration. But they are less likely to trust him with issues related to the environment and health care. Forty-seven percent trust Trump with the economy, 45 percent with foreign policy and 43 percent with foreign trade. The survey indicates a lack of trust in Trump on specific social issues. A significant portion of Americans express little to no trust in Trump on LGBTQ issues (51 percent), transgender issues (50 percent), the environment (49 percent), and race relations (49 percent). The poll reveals stark partisan divides in trust regarding the president's handling of various issues. A substantial majority of Republicans express high confidence in Trump across all twenty issues surveyed, particularly on the economy (87 percent), immigration (87 percent), and foreign policy (84 percent). However, these figures represent slight declines from November 2024. Republicans express the least amount of trust on LGBTQ issues (19 percent have no trust) and transgender issues, on which 15 percent expressed lack of trust in the president. Democrats overwhelmingly express a complete lack of trust in Trump across all issues, with especially low confidence in his ability to manage race relations (84 percent) and LGBTQ issues (81 percent). During his first week in office last month, Trump took several steps related to immigration, including new border policies and increased enforcement. A key aspect of these actions is that while he has promised to address illegal immigration, many of the actions impact established legal immigration processes. Trump has also issued numerous energy policies that dismantled environmental safeguards. This pleased both his backers and the fossil fuel sector. Mike Sommers, CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, praised the actions, saying they would encourage U.S. oil and gas production. However, environmentalists expressed concern, arguing that the policies would damage the environment. The YouGov survey of 1,132 respondents, taken Jan. 4-28, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
