Water disruption expected in Kuching areas from Aug 13-14 for pipeline repairs

Photo for illustration purposes only. KUCHING (Aug 11): Consumers in several areas here are expected to experience low water pressure or a temporary water supply disruption from 9pm on Aug 13 to 8am on to Aug 14 due to pipeline repair works along Jalan Matang-Batu Kawa. The affected areas are Jalan Matang (Kubah Ria to Mile 9), Taman Sri Harmoni, Jalan Sungai Tengah, Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub, Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin, Jalan Demak, Jalan Bako, Muara Tebas, Petra Jaya and surrounding JBALB areas. In a statement today, Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd (SWSB) Southern Region Office said a 750mm diameter Mild Steel Cement Lined (MSCL) pumping main along Jalan Matang–Batu Kawa, near Emart Moyan, experienced its first-ever burst on Aug 6. The incident affected the treated water supply to areas including Batu Kawa, Moyan, Jalan Batu Kawa-Malihah, Matang Jaya, Petra Jaya, Demak Laut, JBALB Semariang and surrounding areas. SWSB Southern Region Office said its team responded promptly to isolate the leak, preventing further damage to the roadway, underground utilities and infrastructure. Repair work was successfully completed on Aug 7, ahead of the initially scheduled timeline. Following the repairs, immediate flushing was carried out to restore clean water supply to affected areas including Batu Kawa, Moyan, Matang Jaya, Petra Jaya and surrounding areas. 'Unscheduled repair works on the 1100mm diameter MSCL pumping main, which were temporarily halted at 3.30am on Aug 6 due to dewatering challenges, site conditions and technical constraints, are set to resume once all preparatory steps are completed. 'The pipeline was dislocated, with welding completed on approximately three-quarters of its circumference. Persistent leakage at the bottom section requires full rectification,' explained SWSB Southern Region Office. To minimise delays, SWSB Southern Region Office has proactively fabricated the necessary fittings locally and is addressing the issues on-site. These two pumping mains are supplying directly to the Bukit Siol reservoir. Reservoir levels at Bukit Siol, Datu Muda, Pending, and Mile 9 3/4 are being built up to satisfactory levels to prevent widespread water pressure issues during the repair process. SWSB Southern Region Office said water tankers will be mobilised to the affected areas and advised consumers to store sufficient water before the scheduled repair window. It assured consumers that efforts are being made to minimise disruptions and restore a stable water supply, adding: 'We appreciate your understanding and patience during this period.' lead Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd (SWSB) Southern Region Office

Matang water main repairs halted due to technical issues, completion expected by early morning

The burst 750mm pumping main along Jalan Batu Kawa-Matang near Emart Moyan. KUCHING (Aug 7): Ongoing repair works on a major 1100mm Mild Steel Cement Lined (MSCL) pumping main along Jalan Matang, near Taman Heng Guan here were temporarily halted today due to unforeseen technical challenges. In a statement, Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd (formerly Laku Management Sdn Bhd) said the repair operation was suspended around 3.30am due to complications involving dewatering, poor site conditions, and other technical issues. 'Inspection revealed that the pipe had been dislocated. Although three-quarters of the circumference had already been welded, a leak was still detected at the bottom section,' the company read. The company said repair works will resume once the site is stabilised and all necessary safety measures, especially around nearby Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) cables, are in place to ensure the safety of workers and surrounding infrastructure. In a separate incident, Sarawak Water reported a second incident involving a burst 750mm MSCL pumping main near Emart Moyan along Jalan Matang–Batu Kawa stretch at about 11pm on Wednesday. 'The affected pipeline was immediately isolated to prevent further road damage and flooding in the vicinity. Repair works commenced at 12pm this afternoon and are expected to be completed by 4am (Aug 8),' the company added. As a result, residents in the following areas may experience low water pressure or temporary supply disruptions throughout the repair period: Jalan Matang–Batu Kawa (from Tondong traffic light to Malihah Methodist Church) Jalan Sungai Moyan Jalan Batu Kawa Bazaar Jalan Batu Kawa Tondong-Bau Jalan Sin San Tu A & B Jalan Moyan Indah, Jalan Min Chung Jalan Kim Pang Jalan Kim Cho Sin Jalan Rantau Panjang Jalan Batu Kawa Chong Jin Chong Jalan Pei Yuan Selatan Jalan Genesis Industrial Park Other surrounding areas Sarawak Water assured that it is actively monitoring the situation and working to restore full water service as safely and quickly as possible. 'We appreciate the public's patience and cooperation during this period. All personnel involved are reminded to exercise extreme caution, particularly when working near SEB cables,' it added. KWB to undertake urgent repairs on major water pipeline along Jalan Highfields Light Industrial to Jalan Batu Kawa

File photo for illustration purposes KUCHING (July 8): The Kuching Water Board (KWB) will carry out urgent repair works on a 1,400mm Mild Steel Cement Lined (MSCL) pumping main along Jalan Highfields Light Industrial near Jalan Batu Kawa, following damage caused by a collapsed concrete slab. According to KWB's technical update titled '1,400mm MSCL Pumping Main at Jalan Highfields Light Industrial – Jalan Batu Kawa', the repair operation will begin at 9pm on July 11 (Friday) and is expected to be completed by 7am the following day (Saturday). 'This marks the third attempt to execute permanent repairs on this critical pipeline, which is over 30 years old and supplies approximately 170 million litres per day (MLD) – about 20 per cent of Kuching's total treated water production of 778 MLD,' said KWB. The affected pipeline supplies water to key areas that include Matang Jaya, Petra Jaya, Demak Laut, Semariang, JBALB-served zones, and nearby communities. Previous repair efforts were hampered by several challenges like site constraints where limited space and unstable ground hindered safe and effective equipment deployment; technical compatibility where the ageing pipeline uses non-standard dimensions, and suitable fittings are not commercially available and sructural limitations where the pipe lies beneath a heavy concrete slab structure, requiring precise and safe removal before any repair work. Consumers at Jalan Matang (Kubah Ria to Batu 9; Taman Sri Harmoni; Jalan Sungai Tengah; Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub; Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhamad Salahudin; Jalan Demak; Jalan Bako; Muara Tebas; Petra Jaya and surrounding JBALB areas are expected to experience low water pressure or no water supply during the repair works. During the recovery period, consumers may also experience airlocks or discoloured (dirty) water. KWB said water tankers will be mobilised to provide alternative supply to affected areas and strongly advised consumers to store sufficient water in advance of the scheduled shutdown. 'We are committed to restoring the system with minimal disruption and will continue to monitor progress closely. We thank the public for their patience and understanding as we work to stabilise this critical infrastructure,' KWB said in the statement. Kuching Water Board lead pipe repairs water supply
