Russia says Ukraine keeps trying to breach border
Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov attends a meeting of the Military-Industrial Commission in Saint Petersburg, Russia September 19, 2024. Sputnik/Valery Sharifulin/Pool via REUTERS Russia says Ukraine keeps trying to breach border MOSCOW - Ukrainian troops have made further attempts to breach the Russian border in the Kursk and Belgorod regions, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Friday as President Vladimir Putin hosted world leaders at a major military parade in Moscow. The Defence Ministry said the attacks occurred during a three-day ceasefire running from May 8-10 that Russia has unilaterally declared to mark the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two. Kyiv has called the ceasefire proposal a "farce" and did not agree to it, proposing instead that the two countries adopt a 30-day truce. The Russian Defence Ministry said it had registered four attempts by Ukrainian forces to smash through the border into the Kursk and Belgorod regions in the past week. In eastern Ukraine, Kyiv's troops had attacked Russian forces 15 times during the ceasefire, the ministry said. Ukraine has said Russia had repeatedly breached its own truce this week. The governor of the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region said on Friday that Russia hit eight Ukrainian frontline villages 220 times since the ceasefire went into effect. In Russia's Belgorod border region, the local governor said a Ukrainian drone had attacked a government building on Friday. In Kursk, Ukrainian troops launched a major incursion last August and held onto a chunk of Russian territory for many months as Moscow's forces battled to eject them with help from North Korean soldiers. Some fighting has continued, even after Putin last month declared "victory" in Kursk. Rybar, a pro-Russian war blogger, said there was "high-intensity fighting" between Russian and Ukrainian troops near Tetkino, a village in the region. Rybar and other bloggers said Ukrainian attacks on multiple villages in the neighbouring Belgorod region were continuing on Friday. Reuters could not independently verify statements by war bloggers or battlefield reports from either side. Ukraine and Russia both accused the other of repeatedly violating a previous 30-hour Easter ceasefire declared by Putin. Vladimir Putin shows off horror new mystery cruise missile at weapons test site
Russian ex-president Dmitry Medvedev was shown the unnamed weapon during an inspection of Russia's new military arsenal, with the Kremlin evidently in a rush to get new weapons to the war zone Russia has given a brief glimpse of a 'new cruise missile' in new footage intended to show off its 'promising' new weapons systems. The shark-like nose of the unnamed weapon - seen at the Kapustin Yar test site - does not match Vladimir Putin 's widely known weapons and has puzzled defence and military experts. It was shown to Russian ex-president Dmitry Medvedev - a war hawk - during an inspection of new firepower, with the Kremlin evidently in a rush to get new weapons to the warzone, despite Donald Trump 's efforts at obtaining a peace deal. No details were given of the cruise missile, with one theory that it is a mockup of prototype rather than the finished article. Medvedev was shown the launches of other new weapons. War analyst Kirill Fyodorov said 'nothing interesting' was revealed by the Medvedev footage 'except for a couple of seconds, where we were briefly shown an unknown cruise missile. In appearance, it is a bit similar to the [Russian] Kh-101 - even the tail unit is similar, but it is clearly not one.' Military Informant channel also referred to 'a new unknown cruise missile demonstrated to Dmitry Medvedev during his visit to the Kapustin Yar test site in Astrakhan region. 'The product resembles the American low-observability cruise missile AGM-158 JASSM, which has a very similar 'pencil' shape of the warhead.' The new Russian weapon, only fleetingly shown, appears not to be the finished product, lacking flush rivets and smooth bonded joints. It may be a display or training version of a new missile, not an active one. The Kapustin Yar test site was the launch site for Putin's far larger Oreshnik nuclear-capable intermediate-range ballistic 'wonder weapon' unleashed on Dnipro in Ukraine last year. The showcasing of the mystery cruise missile comes after Russia was reported to have used a revamped Iranian-designed Shahed drone in attacks on Odesa last week. It had a jet engine and 'enhanced warhead', making a horrific wailing sound as it slammed into targets in the Black Sea port city. Medvedev, an ex-Russian president and prime minister, now deputy head of the Kremlin's security council, said he had seen 'promising means of defeat' at the test site. These included 'rocket and barrel artillery, barrage munitions, unmanned aerial vehicles and anti-aircraft weapons'. He said: 'We saw the launches of new rockets, increased anti-jamming protection and long-range projectiles for our main artillery systems. 'The growing need for these systems was discussed just three days ago at a meeting of the Military-Industrial Commission headed by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief [Vladimir Putin]. Let us now discuss what has been achieved and the results.' On Saturday, the Mirror reported how a dangerous Russian satellite suspected to be linked to a nuclear anti-satellite weapons program is 'spinning uncontrollably' in space. Secretive Cosmos 2553, which was set off by Russia ahead of the Ukraine invasion in 2022, is thought now to be no longer operational. The tech is said to be strong enough to wipe out satellite networks including Elon Musk's Starlink internet system, which has helped Ukrainians in the war. The latest concerns come after warnings from the US that the equipment aims to aid the development of a nuclear anti-satellite weapon. However, Vladimir Putin rejected the claims and said that Cosmos 2553 was for research purposes.

'Weapons are still lacking...': Putin admits Russia's shortcomings as Ukraine peace talks postponed
Russia's armed forces still lack certain weapons despite significantly increasing arms production last year, President Vladimir Putin told a meeting of the state Military-Industrial Commission on Wednesday (April 23). According to Putin, Russian troops have received more than 4,000 armoured vehicles, 180 warplanes and helicopters, and over 1.5 million drones of various types. But he said there were gaps in other areas. "I know very well, and many here who are participating in our meeting today know it as well as I do, that these weapons are still lacking," Putin said. World militaries learning from Russia
All the world's armies are closely examining Russia's tactics and technology used in the Ukraine conflict, President Vladimir Putin has said. Moscow should build on its successes in the military-industrial sphere, he stressed. Speaking at a meeting of the country's Military-Industrial Commission on Wednesday, Putin said Russia's battlefield experience is attracting unprecedented global attention. 'Our special military operation – when it comes both to tactics and weapon development – is being studied by all armies of the world, top arms manufacturers, and tech firms.' Russia 'must stay one step ahead,' he said. Putin also expressed his gratitude to the employees of the enterprises that serve as the backbone of Russia's military efforts, noting that the industry faces even more ambitious challenges this year than in 2024. While Russian forces had received over 1.5 million drones and more than 4,000 armored vehicles in 2024, the army is still suffering from a shortfall in FPV (first-person view) drones, which have become one of the key assets in the Ukraine conflict, the president noted. He also stressed that Russia should prioritize the development of unmanned boats and robots, as well as combat lasers, noting that the country has made some progress in these areas. A 2024 US Army War College report outlined several key takeaways from the Ukraine conflict, including the importance of electronic warfare and the challenges posed by a transparent battlefield due to ubiquitous surveillance. According to media reports, China is also taking note, with a focus on deploying swarms of low-cost drones and creating AI-driven coordination systems. Meanwhile, as the fighting in Ukraine rages on, Russia has captured large quantities of Western-supplied equipment – including tanks, armored vehicles, portable missile systems, and NATO-standard communications systems – which it is analyzing to extract technological insights and improve its own battlefield capabilities.
