Libya Deports 228 Egyptian Migrants
Libya's Department for Combating Illegal Migration has confirmed the deportation of 228 irregular migrants of Egyptian nationality via the Musaid land border crossing, following the completion of all necessary legal procedures. In a statement, the department said 16 individuals had been ordered deported by the Public Prosecution, while 21 others were found to be suffering from infectious diseases. An additional 140 migrants were deported based on orders from the Military Intelligence Directorate. The remaining deportees included individuals detained during joint security operations for violating residency regulations within Libya. The department clarified that the deportations were carried out in cooperation with various security agencies as part of broader efforts to uphold national security and public health. The department also noted that 26 other Egyptian nationals had previously been deported from its Al-Bayda branch through the same border crossing. Among them were four individuals diagnosed with contagious illnesses. Authorities stressed that these actions fall within Libya's ongoing campaign to reduce irregular migration, maintain public order, and protect the health and safety of citizens and residents alike. The deportation measures come amid mounting challenges in managing migration flows across Libya's porous borders, which have made the country a major transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe. Human rights organisations have often expressed concern over the conditions faced by detained migrants in Libya. However, Libyan authorities insist that deportation operations follow legal protocols and health screenings. The statement reaffirmed the government's commitment to addressing the migration issue in coordination with neighbouring countries and international partners, while enforcing immigration laws and safeguarding public health. Iraq captures ISIS operative in Kirkuk
Shafaq News/ Iraqi police arrest a senior ISIS member in Kirkuk province, the Military Intelligence Directorate announced on Thursday. The directorate said in a statement that it had arrested 'a wanted terrorist under Article 4 (terrorism) in the Sayyadah area of Kirkuk.' The statement added that 'the wanted individual had held several roles in the group, including being the driver for the ISIS Minister of Education, then the driver for the Minister of Agriculture, a commander in the Diwan of Soldiers, and a fighter at the checkpoints in the so-called Kirkuk province. He has been handed over to the requesting authorities.' On Monday, Iraq's National Security Service announced the arrest of a member of ISIS, who had been operating under disguise by selling alcohol in Baghdad. Despite its defeat in 2017, ISIS continues to operate in Iraq through sleeper cells that carry out guerrilla warfare, assassinations, kidnappings, and extortion. Iraqi forces have intensified counter-terrorism efforts in several provinces since early 2024, resulting in the destruction of ISIS hideouts, arrests, and the elimination of key leaders. Although ISIS can no longer conduct large-scale operations, smaller cells are exploiting security gaps to maintain a presence in the region.
