Why social media's viral 'jelly beauty' trend could take years off your beauty look
Beauty fans have been raving about the most recent makeup trend - jelly beauty - and with brands such as e.l.f and Milk launching jelly formula products, we chat to experts about why this has become so popular Social media is great for getting inspiration for beauty and skincare buys, as well as tips and tricks for anti-ageing and how to change your routine to suit your skin. Now the latest 'jelly beauty' trend could help to keep you looking youthful for longer according to experts, due to being packed with skin-loving and hydrating ingredients. Several brands are launching jelly products, including e.l.f cosmetics relaunching the iconic Jelly Pop collection after a long-awaited return, as well as the cult favourite Milk Jelly Blush. It originates from Korean beauty and skincare, which has also had a surge in popularity in recent years, with beauty buffs searching K-Beauty more than ever. The hydrating formulas first gained a cult following, mostly from Gen Z, who took to TikTok to share their reviews. Now become a generational phenomenon, K-Beauty products and jelly formulas are everywhere. Zoe Budd, Founder of ZOBU Aesthetic Concierge and advanced aesthetic Facialist told Daily Mirror Jelly textures are having a moment "for a good reason" and said she layers high-impact jelly-style formulas rich in hyaluronic acid, snail mucin, tremella and peptides to flood skin with water, cushion fine lines and create that mirror-finish glow. "These jelly-texture ingredients not only hydrate deeply but also help firm, smooth and support the skin barrier which makes them brilliant for that soft-focus anti-ageing effect. The payoff is that skin looks plump, calm and luminous both on camera and in real life." e.l.f cosmetics most-requested product, the Jelly Pop Dew Primer (£10) is finally back for a limited time, and the sticky gel primer helps to keep makeup in plce while moisturising skin. Infused with vitamin E plus watermelon extract and a refreshing watermelon scent, it smooths skin's texture. Dr Jessica Halliley, Founder of Your Beauty Doctor noted that jelly-textured beauty products have become an instant hit "thanks to their playful, cooling and water-rich formulas that tap into our craving for dewy, youthful skin". She told Daily Mirror: "These hybrid gel-cream textures are typically infused with plumping ingredients like hyaluronic acid which delivers hydration, while visibly softening the appearance of fine lines." The expert said they're great for a quick 'boost' and from a skincare standpoint the water-based texture coupled with humectants could "help support skin firmness and dewiness". But said the "anti-ageing effect is essentially on a temporary surface level" and advised long-term skin changes would be required for "real regeneration". Milk Makeup Cooling Water Jelly Tint - Lip + Cheek Blush Stain (£22) has earned a cult status among beauty fans, who call it a "must have" for any makeup bag that people say leaves their skin looking healthy. Another viral favourite that has been hailed on TikTok by beauty fans is the fwee Lip & Cheek Blurry Pudding Pot (£16). A tinted balm for the lips and cheeks. The creamy, bouncy pudding-like texture glides on effortlessly. It can work as a matte lip tint or blush and the pigmented formula blurs to leave a subtle finish or can be layered to build colour.

Darina Allen: Three 'real food' recipes for a taste of Tasmania
Tasmanian food activist Matthew Evans from The Fat Pig Farm has been on my radar for a very long time but until recently our paths had never crossed. Well, blow me away, if he didn't walk into the hall of the Ballymaloe Cookery School the other day. I couldn't believe my eyes. He was over this side of the world to attend Groundswell, the regenerative farming festival in Hertfordshire in the UK and decided to swing by Ireland where some of his ancestors hailed from. Matthew has had a fascinating life, originally the restaurant critic for the Sydney Morning Herald, he became a chef, restaurateur, food writer, TV broadcaster and now is also a farmer. His seventy-acre mixed farm is in the beautiful Huon Valley, south of Hobart, right down on the southern end of Tasmania. He grows vegetables and fruit, makes cider, fattens a few heritage pigs and milks a couple of house cows to have beautiful fresh milk, the subject of Milk, one of his 15 books. Another simply entitled Soil is a hymn to the underappreciated three or four inches of earth below our feet on which our very existence depends. He, just like me, is passionate about the importance of rich fertile soil. After all, the only reason we have life on earth is topsoil, crucial for the health of the planet and our ability to grow food. Matthew came to farming from the kitchen. As a chef, he became intrigued by flavour and super curious about why some vegetables and fruits and herbs were so much more delicious than others. What was it that made a simple ingredient like carrots for example, taste so much more intensely sweet than others? This inevitably led him to the soil. Richer, more fertile organic soil, usually produces better tasting and more nutrient dense food — surprise, surprise! And so he has become a feisty advocate for regenerative, ecological farming, growing food in a way that replenishes the soil and ecosystems and keeps us healthy. Groundswell on Lannock Farm, now in its tenth year, creates a forum for farmers, growers, anyone interested in food production and the environment to come together to share ideas and learn about the theory of practical applications of regenerative farming systems. A series of brilliant speakers entice thousands of people from all over the world. ( (There was quite a contingent from Ireland and NOTS – National Organic Training Skillnet too, There is a consensus that we urgently need a global metric to measure outcomes on our farms. Polluters need to pay for the damage to the environment and farmers who deliver positive climate, nature and social outcomes, should be rewarded financially. These actions would be a game-changer. One of the many inspirational sessions I attended was entitled, Farming: Our Health Service. There is a growing concern that our current food system is broken but farming has the potential to be our natural health service so what do we need from food production to regenerate public health? They explored how whole health agriculture is needed to realign farming with both human and environmental health and wellbeing. Regenerative Farming or 'Regen' is the great new buzzword, but it is already being commandeered by the multinational food companies in their marketing and labelling. Thus far, however there is no definition so there is considerable confusion amongst the general public and a definite possibility of greenwashing. Regen is an admirable way to embark on a journey towards less artificial inputs, pesticides, herbicides and ultimately organic farming, however many 'regen' farmers are still using glyphosate, albeit less, to kill weeds but it also damages life in the soil. Without a strict definition, this inspirational movement runs the risk of being discredited. Matthew Evans gave me a present of his latest book, 'The Real Food Companion', published by Murdoch Books, a lifetime's worth of food knowledge, from the soil (where it all begins) to the table. Difficult to pick just three recipes from the hundreds in this inspirational tome, but enjoy these to get started. All recipes are from 'The Real Food Companion' by Matthew Evans, published by Murdoch Books. Matthew Evans' Crab and Chilli Omelette Rich egg, sweet crab and the spice of chilli combine to make this one hell of an omelette. Servings 2 Preparation Time 10 mins Cooking Time 10 mins Total Time 20 mins Course Main Ingredients 100g cooked crab meat 2 small red chillies, seeded and finely sliced 3 tbsp chopped coriander leaves 1 tsp fish sauce 4 eggs, lightly beaten 1 tbsp peanut oil 1 large garlic clove, crushed Method Mix the crabmeat in a bowl with the chilli, coriander, and fish sauce, then add the remaining sauce to the eggs. Heat the peanut oil in a large non-stick frying pan over high heat and quickly fry the garlic until starting to colour. Add the egg and stir until it is half cooked. Scatter the crab mixture over the top and press gently into the egg. When the egg is nearly cooked, fold the omelette over, and tip onto a plate. Halve the omelette and serve with steamed rice. Matthew Evans' Honeyed Anzac Biscuits I like my Anzac biscuits chewy, and it may take a couple of attempts to get them just right. Honey makes a nice change from the golden syrup that is used in most traditional recipes. Servings 25 Preparation Time 20 mins Cooking Time 20 mins Total Time 40 mins Course Baking Ingredients 100g rolled (porridge) oats 135g plain flour, sifted 200g caster sugar 70g shredded coconut 125g butter, cubed 2 tbsp honey 1 ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda (baking soda), sifted Preheat the oven to 180°C/Gas Mark 4. Line two baking trays with baking paper. Method Mix the oats, flour, sugar and coconut together in a large bowl. Make a well in the centre. Heat the butter and honey in a saucepan over medium heat and stir until melted and combined. Stir in the bicarbonate of soda to combine (it will foam up, this is normal). Pour the honey mixture into the dry ingredients and mix to combine. If it seems too stiff, add 1-2 teaspoons of water. Place dessertspoon-sized blobs about 5cm apart on the prepared trays, allowing room for them to spread. Bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden. They will keep in an airtight container for up to 1 week. Matthew Evans' Rosewater A brilliant time of the year to make your own homemade rosewater. Makes 1 litre Course Side Ingredients 400g sugar petals from about 40 unsprayed roses, rinsed well Method Put the sugar and 1 litre water in a large saucepan over high heat and stir until the sugar dissolves. Bring to a simmer and push in as many petals as the water will hold. Bring back to a simmer, then turn off the heat and allow to steep until cool. Drain and discard the petals. You can intensify this syrup by repeatedly adding petals and steeping, though you do lose some liquid each time. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Variation: To make orange blossom water, follow the method for rosewater above, but substitute two handfuls of orange blossoms for the rose petals. You can also use lemon, cumquat or lime blossoms. Seasonal Journal One Plate for Palestine Campaign Seek out various restaurants, cafés, bars, pubs, food trucks, market stalls who are participating in One Plate for Palestine, spearheaded by Barbara Nelson of St. Francis Provisions in Kinsale and Beverly Matthews of L'Atitude 51 in Cork City. Review: A latte love for Kei Coffee House
If you are an Orange County local, the popularity of Kei Coffee House will come as no surprise. Nestled in the heart of Westminster, the cozy retreat is the newest branch of Kei Concepts — an Asian fusion restaurant chain based in California. Recognizing the central role of coffee in every community, Kei Coffee House merges the prevalent hustle culture with an immersive experience. Whether it's a quick, robust cup to go or a leisurely exploration at their tasting bar, Kei Coffee House offers a wide range of items on their menus, suitable for all age ranges to enjoy. Architecture Kei Coffee House has been booming with business. Photo by Zachary Leach. Stepping through the entrance, visitors are immediately welcomed into a vibrant community filled with lively conversations and positive vibes. The spacious layout of the shop accommodates diverse table settings, making it an ideal location for collaboration or co-working. The many seating options include bars for casual chats, duo tables for coffee dates, and bigger, isolated tables, perfect for 'locking in' on work or assignments. The shop boasted a modern Japanese interior, largely made up of smooth, wooden pieces with lush greenery, providing a refreshing atmosphere and overall flow, where each thoughtfully designed space transitions effortlessly into the next. The overflowing sunlight was definitely a plus, further boosting the lighthearted feeling of the shop. Subtle yet unique highlight pieces adorned each corner, and gentle R&B music enhanced the overall ambiance. Kei Coffee House offers both outdoor and indoor seating, giving visitors the flexibility to choose their perfect atmosphere for the day. Despite its popularity, the shop maintains a relaxed, unrushed vibe. However, if you're seeking a quick coffee stop, Kei might not be the best option; the wait times can be lengthy depending on the time of day, and the drink sizes are smaller compared to the price. With that being said, here are my thoughts on just some of the many treats offered at Kei Coffee House. Corn Matcha Latte with Oat Milk As a self-appointed matcha enthusiast, I was especially excited to order this drink. Similar to what the name suggests, the Corn Matcha Latte featured a classic, unsweetened matcha latte with sweet corn cream on top. However, this drink was an unfortunate case of 'all looks, no taste.' The corn flavor was extremely mild, and to make matters worse, the cream topping tasted like pure whipped-up milk. The matcha clearly fell short of ceremonial grade, lacking the deep umami richness and sweetness notable of high-quality matcha. This poor addition of the cream failed to enhance the taste, instead diluting it to a cup of oat milk with a faint whisper of corn. I give this drink a 4.5/10 and would not order it again. Strawberry Matcha Latte with Oat Milk My disappointment with the Corn Matcha Latte was surprisingly replaced with joy as I took my first sips of the Strawberry Matcha Latte. Compared to the previous downfall of a drink, the latte offered a refreshing flavor profile, suitable for those looking to cool off on a hot summer day. The strawberry notes were very prominent in every sip, providing a fruity hint without overpowering the sweetness or taste of the matcha. Without the cream, the matcha flavor shone through beautifully, though it did feel a bit watered down at times. The balance between the vibrant strawberry and the earthy matcha created a delightful harmony, giving each sip a cheerful burst of flavor that left me eagerly anticipating the next. I give this drink a 7.5/10 and would order it again. Banana Toffee Latte Banana Toffee Latte. Photo by Zachary Leach. As a non-coffee drinker, I pleasantly enjoyed the flavor profiles of this drink. Though the banana accents depicted in the name did not show through the coffee itself, it was evident in the toffee bits sprinkled on top, providing a refreshing, unique burst of flavor that was sure to stay throughout. The coffee was not too bitter and featured the perfect touch of sweetness to complement its rich, bold flavor. Apart from the tiny bits of toffee on top, the latte did not fall far from your average cup of coffee, yet it may still serve as a staple drink for those wanting something extra special in their daily routine. I give this drink a 7.5/10 and would order it again. Corn Cheese Cookie If you're not feeling thirsty, there are a plentiful amount of foods and desserts offered at Kei Coffee House. Photo by Zachary Leach. Based on my previous knowledge of everything corn cheese related (i.e. Mexican street corn and Korean corn dogs), I was especially apprehensive yet very excited to try this fusion of flavors. The Corn Cheese Cookie featured a savory sugar cookie with a cream cheese frosting on top, accompanied by a few mingling strands of tasteless shredded cheddar. To my surprise, the notions of sweet and savory created a delicious combo. The soft, buttery cookie blended perfectly with the cream cheese on top, creating a concoction that was not overbearing of each other. The corn taste of the cookie really came through, though it does leave an aftertaste reminiscent of my childhood favorite Play-Doh. Apart from its appalling price, the Corn Cheese Cookie provides a very unique flavor that will leave you pondering for a while. I give this cookie a 7/10 and am unsure if I will order it again. Popcorn Chicken Seeing as Kei Coffee House is a predominantly drinks-based store, I was skeptical of ordering any food items from the menu. I couldn't have been more mistaken. This popcorn chicken is arguably the best popcorn chicken offered in town. Its savory and sweet seasoning paired with the tangy ranch on the side provided the perfect contrast that left my mouth watering after the first bite. The chicken had a perfect combination of crunchiness on the outside and juiciness on the inside, managing to avoid the desert of dryness that tends to plague most fried dishes. Aside from the diabolical price-to-size ratio, we give it a 9/10, even ordering a second box to go. Related

Promising review: "I had never tried a tubing mascara before, but I've seriously been converted (and have also converted my friends + family). Not only does it apply smoothly, but it doesn't transfer on your skin throughout the day (something I've always struggled with, having long bottom lashes). The best part is how EASY it is to remove at the end of the day. I find it easiest to just very gently wipe my eyes with warm water in the shower, it's a little weird to see the mascara come off, it looks like your eyelashes are coming off. 10/10!! —SwaginatorPrice: $7 (available in three shades) A 36-pack of hydrocolloid pimple patches so you can send zits packin' before they try to make themselves at home on your face. I got the Toffee flavor, and it smells incredible — like a warm, sweet caramel latte. It's the kind of scent that makes you want to reapply just for the cozy vibes. The texture is so smooth and buttery without being sticky, and it leaves the perfect glossy finish. It's super hydrating too — my lips instantly feel soft and moisturized, and that feeling actually lasts (which is rare for such an affordable balm). It's perfect to wear on its own or over a lip liner for a little extra shine." —anyagPrice: $9 (available in six shades) A Holy Hydration! lip mask for anyone who absolutely despises a dry pout. It's loaded with hyaluronic acid, it's not sticky, and it can be paired flawlessly with other lip products. After it locks in moisture, you'll be saying, "holy hydration!" — ohhh, now I get it. A water-resistant laminating brow gel that'll help sculpt, shape, and set your eyebrows, leaving them with that popular, fluffy laminated look. It dries clear, won't flake up, and doesn't leave your brows feeling stiff. AKA, it's an eyebrow miracle in a tube. Promising review: "I actually have never really used a brow gel before, and I have to say I really like this product. My brows usually look a little wild at the start, but with this gel from e.l.f they don't look half bad. I like that it is clear, so it can be used by anyone. The gel dries clear, and you cannot even feel it after it is dry (so it isn't stiff or anything after it dries). The three different combs are very handy (one to apply, one to disperse the product, and one to set it in place). I am not well-versed in the makeup scene yet, so it took me a second to figure out which brush was which, but I got the hang of it just fine. The directions on the back are clear and concise, and the packaging is nice." —_Vampire_ChickPrice: $8 A sheer black cherry lipstick reviewers and TikTok-ers say reminds them of a certain $25 "Black Honey" lippie. If you want a nourishing pout with a subtle hint of color and a shiny finish, then this lipstick is exactly what you're looking for. LOVE THE COLOR AND THE PRICE!" —Radams1113"So you wanted a hydrating, buildable, beautiful lipstick that's easy to swipe on the go and probably universally flattering? You found her. This formula has finesse. Ladies and gentlemen, it's not a cheap alternative if it's better than everything else out there. She's one of a kind." —jaaac7ynnNPrice: $5 A ~cooling~ minty face primer — a sticky, hydrating gel primer that'll leave you looking like a dewy god/goddess. Love how it holds my makeup and it works wonders in the heat!" —Sphyxl1"I was sooooo excited when e.l.f decided to bring back the Mint Melt Primer! You could probably get every single shade, and all of them would still cost less than one from a high-end, expensive brand. I just started using this liner in the shade "dark cocoa," and now I refuse to buy any other lip liner. Not only is it the *perfect* shade of brown, but it's only two freaking dollars. Why have I been spending so much money when this creamy, gorgeous, cheap-as-heck baby exists?!Promising review: "I am in love with the formula!
