Welsh dad was going to cancel lottery ticket but forgot - then he received a phone call
Welsh dad was going to cancel lottery ticket but forgot - then he received a phone call He, his wife and his children are in disbelief at what happened next Karen and Joel are amongst four others to share a one million pound prize A Welsh dad and NHS worker forgot to cancel his People's Postcode Lottery ticket, and on Sunday he won £250,000. Joel Tapner, 45, from Rhondda Cynon Taf, was ready to quit the lottery last month - but it slipped his mind while he was on a family holiday in Porthcawl. As a result of him being distracted mid-cancelling his ticket, Joel has now become one of four neighbours to split a £1 million prize in the former coal mining village of Gilfach Goch. NHS worker Joel said: 'It was a big relief, I must admit, when I got the call from Postcode Lottery to say I'd won. All I was thinking was 'Thank God, I didn't cancel it'. Get the latest Rhondda news first by signing up to our newsletter here 'I was about to call to cancel last month, and I put the phone down, walked away to do something else and forgot about cancelling it.' 'I'm totally amazed and overwhelmed at the amount that I've actually won.' Four neighbours each picked up a cheque for £250,000 after CF39 8TW was announced as the winner of the lottery's weekly Millionaire Street prize. Article continues below This comes exactly a month after another community less than 10 miles away scooped the same prize. Twenty-eight neighbours in nearby Llantwit Fardre shared £1m after CF38 2RE won on Saturday, May 31. When Joel's prize was revealed to wife Karen, 50, she screamed in delight from the upstairs window of their terraced valleys home. Karen and Joel are buzzing with the win and say they are in disbelief. The couple want to spend some of their money revisiting their honeymoon destination Karen said: 'I screamed my head off. My daughter actually told me off. She was like 'mum shut up'. 'It's still not real. I'd maybe have believed £2,500 but not the extra zeroes. There'll be another big scream when it lands in our bank account.' Joel, who works as a clinical coder at a local hospital, almost missed out on the whopping win when he chose to stop his lottery subscription after playing for five years. "We were in Porthcawl last month, having a week away for the school holidays. And I got an email [from Postcode Lottery] and thought 'I'm going to cancel it'," said Joel. 'I got distracted and put my mobile down. I totally forgot about it and the next thing I know I'm receiving a phone call, and the Postcode Lottery want to come to my house, and now I've won a quarter of a million pounds.' The cheering couple are now planning to revisit Morocco - 21 years after having their honeymoon there - with their daughters Freya, 19, and Kaelah, 15. The family-of-four, who recently renewed their passports, said the massive windfall would bring forward their holiday plans. Joel said: 'The holiday we were going to do next year, we can do this year. 'Karen and I went there for our honeymoon. It was a lovely place, from the hotel we stayed in, to the friendly people, the markets, and excursions were brilliant. We'd love to take our two daughters with us. 'We literally just renewed our passports. We renewed one passport a month ago, and Kaelah just got her new passport last week.' Karen, who met Joel when they both were working in health and social care in Southampton in 2003, is now eyeing up her dream purchase with her hubby's winnings. Karen said: 'My ultimate is a campervan, I would love that, it's a dream of mine. I'd go anywhere, tour the UK straight away.' 'But first I'm going to book a spa weekend in Cardiff. I'll drag him along with me.' Joel said: 'Freya's car broke down last night. I ordered a part and it got delivered today. Even after winning £250,000 I've still got to go out and fix the car.' It is safe to say Joel was pleased he got distracted in the middle of trying to cancel his ticket 'We can finish off the garden projects that we started but needed to save up for, now we don't need to save up. 'It'll pay for new sheds and putting the hot tub house back up. It's so exciting I can't believe this will be it.' It's not the first-time Joel has been in the limelight after appearing on TV administering Covid vaccines when he stepped up to help during the pandemic. Joel said: "I've only ever been on TV once before. Every day on BBC News in Wales, you would see me talking to a young lady and then putting a needle in her arm. 'The national news ran it every day. One woman at work said, I've seen you on TV three times today and here in the hospital, you're doing my head in.' All the winning neighbours were delighted to know their good fortune also meant local charities had benefitted. Funding has been awarded by Postcode Community Trust to four local charities as a result of the win. Gilfach Goch Community Association (GGCA) is one of the organisations receiving funding, and it's been awarded £80,000 alongside Valleys Kids - a charity dedicated to supporting people and families facing poverty, social isolation and disadvantages. The Cambrian Village Trust Limited has been awarded £40,000, and Menter Iaith, a Welsh language charity from Rhonda Cynon Taf, will receive £30,000.
