Lexi Minetree Reveals Advice Reese Witherspoon Offered Her for ‘Legally Blonde' Prequel ‘Elle'

Lexi Minetree is grateful she has Reese Witherspoon in her corner while filming the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series Elle. "She's just the best. She's so warm and so caring," Minetree, 23, who plays the younger version of Witherspoon's character, exclusively told Us Weekly at the Amazon Upfronts on Monday, May 12. "She's always checking in with me." Minetree felt thankful for the support Witherspoon, 49, has shown her, adding, "[She's] making sure I'm drinking enough water, making sure I'm getting enough rest and making sure I'm just taking in every moment, which I really appreciate. She's amazing." While preparing to embody the role of Elle Woods, Minetree recalled watching the original movie "over 50 times." What to Know About Prime Video's 'Legally Blonde' Prequel 'Elle': Returning Cast Members and More "As for making it my own, one of the directors, Jason Moore, said something that really stuck with me. He said, 'Do the work, do the prep and then throw it away and let your instinct take over,'" she shared with Us. "That's really what I've tried to take to heart and add my own little thing to it." Based on Amanda Brown's novel, the 2001 movie Legally Blonde introduced Us to Elle Woods (Witherspoon), a sorority girl who attempted to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner (Matthew Davis) by attending Harvard Law School. Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Victor Garber and Jennifer Coolidge rounded out the cast, which inspired a second movie two years later. News broke in 2018 that Witherspoon had teamed up with Mindy Kaling for Legally Blonde 3 — but there has been no real update since. Instead, the focus has shifted to Prime Video's prequel series Elle, which according to the official synopsis follows the titular character in high school as "we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film. In other words, get ready for the teen years of this legendary lawyer's story." "Elle is in high school so she's still trying to figure out who she is as a person," Minetree teased on Monday. "She definitely loves fashion, just like she did in the movie. But again, I think what audiences are going to love is [that] she really gets to discover herself during this time." A Guide to Every 'Legally Blonde' Spinoff and Sequel: From Movies to Broadway Joining the project has made Minetree even more appreciative of Elle's favorite color, adding, "I do think I definitely need to love pink now but I've always enjoyed it, which I think is a good thing." As for who from the original movie Minetree would like to see make a cameo? "I would love it if Jennifer Coolidge can make an appearance," she noted. "She's just the best. Who doesn't love Jennifer Coolidge?" In addition to Minetree, Elle's parents will be played by June Diane Raphael and Tom Everett Scott. Chandler Kinney, Gabrielle Policano and Jacob Moskovitz were also announced as series regulars. Elle will premiere in summer 2026 on Prime Video.

Yep, that sure looks like the teenage Elle Woods

There's a new prequel in town, and her name is Elle. It is not a prequel to Paul Verhoeven's 2016 film of the same name, to the dismay of anyone hoping for a psychosexual thriller summer. It is the long-teased prequel to the 2001 film Legally Blonde, set during future Harvard grad Elle Woods' high school years. In February, the series cast newcomer Lexi Minetree in the lead role, and today, producer and original star Reese Witherspoon shared photographic evidence of Minetree in the role. 'Harvard was hard. High School was harder. Our new series, Elle, is now in production!' Witherspoon wrote on Instagram along with an image of Minetree wearing pink and talking on the phone, two things Elle Woods circa 1996 certainly would be likely to do. Image courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios The timeline of when this series might actually arrive is unclear, but the image would suggest that they are at least into filming. Last week, Deadline reported that Elle's parents Wyatt and Eva had been cast, hiring Tom Everett Scott and June Diane Raphael in the roles, respectively. The series 'follows Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first 'Legally Blonde' film,' per its official logline. Of course, the original film posits that before Elle followed her ex-boyfriend Warner to Harvard, she was a naive and shallow, if very bright, girl from Southern California in the mid-90s. Elle's character development happens at law school—before that, she was clueless, pun fully intended. More from A.V. Reese Witherspoon brings actor to tears as she shares casting announcement for Legally Blonde prequel series

Reese Witherspoon has introduced the young actor who will be taking on her iconic character of Elle Woods in the forthcoming Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle. Witherspoon, 48, who originated the role of the peppy law student and future lawyer in the 2001 rom-com and its 2003 sequel, made the announcement in a collaborative Instagram post shared Thursday. 'Allow me to introduce you to the new Elle Woods! After watching so many incredible auditions for the new Elle prequel series on @PrimeVideo, we finally found our Elle. And today, I got to break the news myself! Meet @leximinetree,' she wrote in the caption of the video. In the video, the Oscar-winning actor paces around a hotel room, squealing: 'I'm so excited. Oh my god!' before settling down to welcome budding actor Lexi Minetree into the room. The two share a hug, after which Witherspoon brings Minetree over to a couch to break the news. 'Your audition tape was amazing, as we talked about,' the Big Little Lies star prefaces. 'And we had to make a really hard decision, and we wanted to tell you in person because you've just worked really hard. We just wanted to tell you that you don't have to audition anymore because you got the part. You're Elle Woods.' Minetree instantly bursts into tears. 'Wait. Really?' she says in disbelief, with Witherspoon responding: 'Yeah, you're Elle Woods.' Asking if she can again hug Witherspoon, the two share another tight embrace. 'I haven't slept in three nights,' the Morning Show actor admits. 'I wanted to tell you sooner.' Minetree — who's so far appeared in a single 2024 episode of Law & Order: SVU and the 2023 crime-thriller Murdaugh Murders: The Movie — then says she wants to call her mom to tell her the casting update. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Reese Witherspoon (@reesewitherspoon) After a couple of rings, Minetree's mom picks up. Witherspoon takes the phone to tell her: 'Hey, Anne. Lexi just handed me the phone. This is Reese Witherspoon.' 'You're joking,' Minetree's mom replies, as Witherspoon reassures: 'No, I'm not kidding. Wanted to tell you some really good news. But actually, I would prefer to have Lexi tell you. It's her news to tell you.' 'I'm Elle Woods!' Minetree shrieks in excitement. Her mom congratulates her before noting: 'Y'all sound exactly alike.' 'Isn't it crazy?' Witherspoon agrees. 'When I saw her tape, I was like, 'Are we the same person? This is so weird.'' The casting reveal comes months after Witherspoon announced in September 2024 that they were officially holding open auditions for the series lead. Titled Elle, the Prime Video series will follow the titular character through her teenage years, delving into the experiences that shaped her into the ambitious young woman viewers know from the original film.
