Nanta: Malaysia integrates AI into transport systems to enhance road safety and efficiency

KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 — Malaysia continues to move forward in enhancing its road management by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technology, thus increasing the efficiency, safety and effectiveness of road and infrastructure management. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said Malaysia is not only an observer of such technology but is currently among the countries implementing AI technology in road management. 'Through smart monitoring technologies like drones, sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT), we can detect road damage in real time. AI helps us analyse this data to identify locations that need immediate attention and to predict potential future damage He said this when making a presentation on 'Malaysia's Future-Ready, Hyper-Connected Cities: Policies, Progress and the Path Ahead' at the 2025 Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Asia Pacific Forum in Suwon, South Korea today. Nanta also shared the strategic direction of the Ministry of Works through the Malaysian ITS Roadmap 2030, which is driven by the vision to build safer, more connected and sustainable national mobility. 'The ITS is currently a basic requirement in the construction of future cities that are resilient, efficient and sustainable. The Malaysian ITS Roadmap 2030 being developed will be our main guide in transforming the country's ITS landscape,' he said. He added that five core policy pillars would be the backbone of the implementation of the plan, namely hyperconnected transportation through seamless smart mobility, a pathway towards green and sustainable mobility, strengthened public services through the digitalisation of transportation, a safe and secure transport ecosystem and the use of data for mobility and transportation planning. 'All these plans can be translated into action. Malaysia will continue to innovate, invest and collaborate to build a country that is hyperconnected,' he said. Nanta said many exciting revolutions are happening in the ITS landscape in Malaysia, including advancements in autonomous vehicles (AV), the use of electric vehicles in public transport, the introduction of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system and the establishment of the National Intelligent Traffic Management Centre (NITMC). 'These transformation initiatives illustrate Malaysia's strong commitment to building a safer, more efficient and sustainable transport ecosystem, in line with our broader vision towards hyperconnected cities,' he said. — Bernama

Works Ministry vows wildlife crossings in new highway projects amid uproar over heartbreaking baby elephant's death

KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 – The Ministry of Works has today pledged to incorporate dedicated wildlife crossing features into the design and construction of new roads and highways across Malaysia. It pointed to an underpass tunnel which was constructed along the Taiping Selatan–Beruas stretch of the West Coast Expressway (WCE) as an example, amid renewed calls from the traffic death of an elephant calf on the East-West Highway. 'The Ministry of Works, through its agencies such as the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) and the Public Works Department (JKR), will ensure that this element is incorporated into the design and construction of new roads and highways. 'Close collaboration with Perhilitan will continue to ensure ongoing improvements in wildlife conservation,' it posted on Facebook. It also urged motorists to slow down and drive carefully when passing through designated wildlife crossing zones, which are clearly marked with signboards and street lighting. The ministry also expressed appreciation to the public for supporting wildlife protection efforts. Earlier, the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry said long-term solutions to human-elephant conflicts in Malaysia must involve close collaboration between the federal and state governments, as key wildlife habitats fall under state jurisdiction. The ministry stressed that preserving elephant habitats and ensuring safe movement across fragmented landscapes requires the development of ecological corridors, the creation of sanctuaries, and coordinated land use planning involving all levels of government and stakeholders.

‘Slanderous and malicious': Works minister rejects Sabah Pan Borneo graft claims; lodges police report

SIBU, May 8 — Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has denied allegations of his involvement in a corruption scandal related to the Pan Borneo Highway Sabah project (WP35), which recently went viral on a Telegram channel. In a statement on Facebook today, he described the claims as slanderous, baseless and malicious in intent against him as a member of the government administration. 'The message contains direct accusations against me as the Malaysian Minister of Works, with defamatory, unfounded and malicious claims. I categorically deny all such allegations,' he said. He added that the baseless accusations not only affect his reputation but also tarnish the image of the Ministry of Works and the government as a whole. More worryingly, he said, the message that first appeared on Telegram has since spread to other social media platforms, potentially causing misunderstandings and negative public perception. Following this, a police report was lodged yesterday by his senior private secretary at the Tun H.S. Lee police station in Kuala Lumpur to deny the allegations and request an immediate investigation. 'I will fully cooperate in any form necessary to assist the investigation and leave it entirely to the authorities to take appropriate action against those responsible for spreading this slander,' he stressed. He also emphasised that the act of spreading slander should not be used as a political weapon or a means to bring someone down for personal gain. — Bernama

Bahrain to build flyover connecting key bridges in Muharraq

Bahrain's Works Minister Ebrahim bin Hassan Al Hawaj has announced plans to begin construction on a new flyover connecting Shaikh Isa bin Salman Bridge with Avenue 105 in Busaiteen. The project is part of the ongoing development of the Muharraq Ring Road and the Fourth Bridge initiative, which aims to improve traffic flow in Muharraq Governorate, the minister said. The project involves building a dual-lane flyover in each direction to channel traffic from Manama via Shaikh Isa bin Salman Bridge onto the Muharraq Ring Road along Avenue 105 in Busaiteen. It will also facilitate traffic movement from the Ring Road towards Muharraq city, easing traffic between Manama and Muharraq following the opening of the Muharraq Ring Road in late 2024. The flyover is expected to improve connectivity between the capital and Muharraq, as well as nearby areas such as Busaiteen, Al Sayah, and Diyar Al Muharraq, while reducing congestion at the Shaikh Isa bin Salman Bridge and Al Ghous Street junction. The Ministry of Works has urged road users to cooperate with traffic diversions and guidance for public safety. -TradeArabia News Service. The project will be executed by Nass Contracting.
