Qatar participates in Int'l Family Forum in Istanbul
QNA Istanbul Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Social Development and Family, recently participated in the International Family Forum held in Istanbul, Turkiye. Organised by the Turkish Ministry of Family and Social Services, the forum convened under the theme 'OurFamilyOurFuture'. Assistant Undersecretary for Family Affairs HE Sheikha Sheikha bint Jassim Al Thani led Qatar's delegation to the forum. The forum focused on strengthening and protecting the institutions of family and marriage, as well as fostering the well-being of future generations and robust demographic structures. The event aimed to enhance understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing families and communities, and to establish a common platform for discussions on how to better protect, empower, and support families in their vital roles. The ministry also took part in a ministerial session titled 'Integrating Family-Oriented Policies: National and International Efforts.' During the session, the ministry emphasised Qatar's strong commitment to supporting and empowering families, noting that contemporary challenges require comprehensive policies rooted in scientific research. This is particularly crucial given demographic shifts, domestic violence, and social changes brought about by technology and work. The ministry also participated in the third dialogue session 'The Family in the Era of Digital Screens'. This session highlighted the challenges posed by digital technologies and social media on families, including their impact on family cohesion, upbringing, and mental health, stressing the importance of balanced technology use and the activation of awareness programs to reinforce family values. On the sidelines of the forum, Assistant Undersecretary for Family Affairs HE Sheikha Sheikha bint Jassim Al Thani met with Palestinian Minister of Social Development Dr. Samah Abu Al Awn. Their discussion centred on avenues of cooperation between the two ministries and methods of providing support to affected Palestinian families. She also met with Nigeria's Minister of Women Affairs Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim. They reviewed the mandates of the Women Affairs Ministry and explored collaborative opportunities and support mechanisms between the two ministries. She also met with Deputy Minister of Family and Social Services of Turkiye Leman Yenigun. The discussion focused on bilateral cooperation and the exchange of expertise in child protection and technology.

The session began with a Quranic recitation by one of the children, symbolising the spiritual and emotional grounding provided to those in the centre. The presentation detailed the centre's commitment to providing a holistic environment for children, including educational, social, and health services. It also emphasized the complex's role in strengthening UAE-Türkiye collaboration in early childhood development. Redevelopment project unveiled Sheikha Fatima was briefed on a major redevelopment project for the complex, supported by the UAE Ministry of Community Development and the Zayed Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation in coordination with Türkiye's Ministry of Family and Social Services. The initiative includes extensive expansion, maintenance, and modernization efforts aimed at raising care standards and aligning with international best practices. A humanitarian symbol of bilateral relations Sheikha Fatima praised the complex as a leading humanitarian institution, noting its role in advancing social solidarity and joint cooperation. Tour of nursery facilities Sheikha Fatima visited the nursery section of the complex, which caters to infants and toddlers up to two years old. She commended the centre for its high standard of care during the most formative years of childhood. UAE's longstanding support for children and families In a speech, Sana bint Mohammed Suhail, Minister of Family, highlighted the historical ties between the UAE and Türkiye and the lasting legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. She underlined the UAE's dedication to family and child welfare, supported by the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikha Fatima. She also referenced the designation of 2025 as the 'Year of Community' in the UAE, stressing the importance of family as the foundation of a strong society. Türkiye affirms strong bilateral cooperation Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş, Türkiye's Minister of Family and Social Services, acknowledged the UAE's global role in supporting humanitarian and social initiatives. She praised Sheikha Fatima's leadership in championing the rights of women and children and expressed Türkiye's eagerness to deepen cooperation with the UAE in child protection and family support. Turkish child with Down syndrome banned from entering children's playground in Ankara
ALBAWABA - Turkish media reported that a 7-year-old child with Down syndrome was forbidden from entering children's playground in Ankara causing a wide fuss in the Turkish community. A video erupted on social media showing teacher Sevcan arguing with employees inside the playground area in the shopping mall after they told her that the child with Down syndrome couldn't enter the playing area due to his condition. Turkey's Ministry of Family and Social Services released a statement regarding the viral video on social media confirming that serious measures have been taken against the business and that mental support was given to Mert and his family. They posted the statement on X: "It has been deemed appropriate to make the following statement regarding the news and posts titled 'A 7-year-old child with Down Syndrome was not allowed into the playground in the Etimesgut district of Ankara' published in some press and social media platforms today." (X) "Following the images, our provincial directorate teams took immediate action and met with our child's family, and psychosocial support was provided." The statement also read: "As per the Ministry, a criminal complaint was filed against the business in question under the Turkish Penal Code's 'hate and discrimination' crime." Turkey reveals new details regarding abused Syrian girl in Gaziantep
ALBAWABA - The story of Syrian baby girl Reem who was violently beaten by her father in the Turkish city of Gaziantep has broken the hearts of many people on social media, who called Turkish authorities to punish the abusive father. Also Read Syrian father brutally abuses daughter, sends video to her mother The story began when the Syrian father called Yousef filmed himself brutally beating his 2-year-old daughter Reem to send the video to her mother, who reportedly fled the house, got a divorce and filed a lawsuit against the Syrian man. According to Turkish media, the horrific incident took place in the rural Sinan Neighborhood of the Şehitkamil district in Gaziantep and showcased the father kicking and hitting the little girl, pulling her hair and throwing her on the ground, while another person was taking the video. (Social media) Turkish authorities make first statements regarding the Syrian girl's incident: Turkish police responded quickly after the video circulated on social media and jailed and detained him in the Sinan neighborhood after determining his address. Syrian girl Reem is now under protection by the Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services in Turkey. A statement was released by the Gaziantep Governorate regarding the incident: "Upon the sharing of images of violence against a child in our city on some social media channels on April 4, 2025, as a result of the investigation conducted by teams affiliated with our Provincial Gendarmerie Command, the foreign national named YE, who was understood to be the father of the child who used violence against the child in the images, was detained and subsequently arrested. The victimized child has been taken under protection by our Provincial Directorate of Family Social Services. It is respectfully announced to the public." (X) The information that the abusive father was arrested and that the girl was taken away to a safe place was also confirmed by the Turkish Ministry of Family and Social Services via a statement on their official X account. Where is the Syrian girl Reem now? A rumor circulated online following the video of the little girl claiming that Reem had "died" after being transferred to the hospital in Turkey due to the violence she was subjected to which allegedly left her with a concussion. However, journalist Alaa Othman posted a video on his Facebook account denying the rumor that the Syrian girl had died. He said that after contacting a close relative to the Syrian girl, who was seen in the video in Gaziantep, the baby girl is now in the hospital and is getting medical care, but he said she is in an unstable condition.
