Malayalam actress Minu Muneer held from Kerala in Pocso case

CHENNAI: The Thirumangalam All-Women Police on Wednesday detained Malayalam actress Minu Muneer (51) in connection with a 10-year-old sexual assault case involving a minor. The accused was brought from Kerala to Chennai for inquiry after a complaint, filed last year in Ernakulam, was transferred here, as the incident allegedly took place in Anna Nagar in 2014, the police said. A search is on to trace and arrest the four men involved in the case. According to the complainant, the victim's mother sent her 16-year-old daughter, during a school holiday, to Chennai with Minu, a distant relative, to help her secure a role in films. Minu allegedly took the teenager to a hotel in Anna Nagar, where she introduced her to four men under the pretext of discussing opportunities in the film industry. Two of the men are said to have touched the girl inappropriately, the police said. Fearing repercussions, the victim did not report the incident at the time. In 2024, with the support of her husband and family, the victim's mother approached the police in Kerala, naming the four men and alleged Minu's role in facilitating the meeting. The police said they will inspect the hotel and identify the four men. If Minu is found to have abetted the crime, she will face charges, the police said. A case has been registered under the Pocso Act.

Malayalam actor Minu Muneer detained for interrogation in a POCSO Act case

The All Women Police, Thirumangalam, detained Malayalam actor Minu Muneer, alias Minu Munir, 51, in connection with an inquiry into a sexual assault on her relative, a 16-year-old girl, about 10 years ago. The girl, who is 26 now, filed a complaint last year in Kerala. Subsequently, the complaint was transferred to the police station in Chennai since it was said to be the scene of crime. The victim's mother alleged that during a school holiday in 2014, she sent her daughter to Chennai with her distant relative Minu for getting a role in a film. She took the girl to a hotel at Anna Nagar and introduced her to four people, discussing film opportunities. One person pinched the girl's cheek, while another hugged and kissed her. The girl protested and left the hotel, but did not report the incident owing to fear. The complaint was filed in 2024 at the Muvattupuzha police station in Ernakulam by the victim's mother, with the consent of the victim's husband and family. It was alleged that four men had sexually assaulted her. Since the incident occurred at Anna Nagar, the case was transferred. Subbulakshmi, Inspector, All Women Police, Thirumangalam, and her team travelled to Kerala to pick up the actor and brought her to Chennai for questioning. The police are investigating her role in the alleged offence and plan to visit the hotel to gather evidence. 'We will question the four individuals present at the hotel. If Minu is found abetting them, she will also face charges,' a senior officer said. A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Authorities are searching for the four suspects.

Malayalam actor Minu Muneer arrested, released on bail after actor-director Balachandra Menon accuses her of defamation

Malayalam actor Minu Muneer was arrested by the Kochi Cyber Police following a defamation complaint filed by veteran filmmaker and actor Balachandra Menon. The arrest stems from allegations Muneer made on social media, which Menon claimed were defamatory in nature. She was released on bail shortly after being taken into custody. Balachandra Menon filed a complaint on Minu Muneer for defamation. The Kerala High Court had earlier dismissed her anticipatory bail plea. She is the first accused in the case, which was registered in 2024. She reportedly made repeated derogatory posts about him on social media. Minu Muneer also filed a complaint against actor and MLA M Mukesh, who represents the Kollam Assembly constituency and is a leader of the CPI(M). Meanwhile, the arrest marks a new development in a controversy that has roiled the Malayalam film industry in recent months. In a series of social media posts and subsequent interviews, Muneer had publicly accused several prominent industry figures of sexual misconduct and abuse during their professional collaborations. In August last year, Muneer named actors Mukesh, Jayasurya, Maniyanpilla Raju, and Idavela Babu, alleging both verbal and physical harassment. She also mentioned Advocate Chandrasekharan, production controller Noble, and an individual named Vichu. "I am writing to report a series of incidents of physical and verbal abuse I suffered at the hands of Mukesh, Maniyanpilla Raju, Idavela Babu, Jayasoorya, Advocate Chandrasekharan, production controller Noble and Vichu, in the Malayalam film industry," she wrote, claiming the incidents forced her to leave the Malayalam film industry and shift to Chennai. In a detailed account given to ANI, Muneer expanded on her allegations. "Once, as I was coming out from the toilet, Jayasurya hugged me from behind and even kissed me forcefully... After that, Idavela Babu expressed his interest in a sexual relationship with me," she said. She also accused actor-producer Maniyanpilla Raju of making inappropriate suggestions about her hotel stay during a film shoot, describing his behaviour as "unprofessional and unsettling." The incidents she referred to reportedly date back to 2013. The allegations surfaced in the wake of growing dissent within the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), following unrelated controversies that led to the resignations of director Ranjith and actor Siddique from their posts in the organisation.
