Mirror's Daily Digest - top stories from jail horror to 'inhumane' airport chaos

In this Friday's Mirror Daily Digest, we've pulled together the biggest stories of the day from jail horror after a prison officer was reportedly stabbed to airport chaos leaving many Brits distressed Welcome to the Mirror's Daily Digest, where we'll be pulling together all the best stories of the day from our News, Showbiz, Royal teams and more. This Friday, we're bringing you the biggest stories from the newsroom - from a prison officer who was left with 'serious injuries' after reportedly being stabbed to the Tenerife airport chaos which left Brits trapped in sweltering queues. Meanwhile, our News team has been following the Liverpool parade crash suspect Paul Doyle's appearance at Liverpool Magistrates' Court today. We've also got the latest on Go Compare star Wynne Evans, who has been axed by the BBC following his Strictly Come Dancing scandals. ‌ Horror as 'prison officer stabbed' at jail housing notorious inmates ‌ Our News team has reported that a prison officer has been rushed to hospital after he was reportedly stabbed with a flick knife. Emergency services rushed to HMP Long Lartin at around 10 am this morning, following reports that an inmate knifed an officer. It has been reported that the weapon was dropped into the prison via a drone. A Prison Service spokesperson confirmed the attack and said an investigation is underway. They said: 'Police are investigating an attack on a prison officer at HMP Long Lartin. We will not tolerate assaults on hardworking staff and will always push for the strongest punishments against perpetrators." A spokesperson for West Mercia Police added: "We were called to HMP Long Lartin in South Littleton around 10am this morning (Friday, May 30), following a report someone had been assaulted by an inmate. One man was taken to hospital with serious injuries after sustaining a stab wound. The inmate remains within the prison and the investigation is on-going. " ‌ Wynne Evans axed by BBC after Strictly scandal After months of Strictly Come Dancing scandals, Wynne Evans has been axed by the BBC, our Showbiz team reported this afternoon. The Go Compare star revealed that he has not had his contract renewed and will not be back with the BBC for his radio show - and thus has decided to continue to do his radio show away from the BBC. ‌ It comes after the TV personality hit headlines during his time on the dance show, where he was shown grabbing his professional partner Katya's waist before she pushed his hand away, but he later insisted it was a joke. He then came under fire for using the term 'spit roast' to Janette Manrara during a Strictly photocall but he later insisted it was directed at Jamie Borthwick and nothing to do with Janette. As a result of the comment, he was axed from the Strictly tour - and then a video emerged of him sending a sex toy to his co-star Jamie, which both were heavily criticised for. In an emotional statement, he said: "My beloved Wynners, From the very depths of my heart — thank you. These past few months, your love has been the light in my darkest days. Every message, every word of encouragement, every moment you stood by me has carried me through more than you could ever know.' "It breaks my heart to say the BBC has decided not to renew my contract so I won't be returning to my radio show. I'm gutted. That show wasn't just work — it was home. It was us. We laughed, we cried, we sang like nobody was listening. And somehow, through the airwaves, we became a family." ‌ Brits caught in 'inhumane' airport chaos as passengers fight and vomit in crush Our Travel team has been following the latest updates on the Tenerife South Airport chaos, after British travellers found themselves trapped in two-hour queues and "inhuman" conditions at the start of the school holidays. Last Monday night, more than 500 people found themselves packed into a waiting area at the Canary Islands travel hub. ‌ They waited for hours to pass through the security as a bottleneck formed by two checkpoints, each staffed by two National Police officers. Top Spanish officials will now hold an urgent meeting after the tourists faced "inhuman" conditions at the start of the school holidays. Many were held on a sweltering plane for 45 minutes, only to disembark and find broken escalators and lengthy queues for passport checks. Becks Gravil was one of those swept up in the chaos. It took her family two hours to leave the airport after landing at 8.30pm. "Never in my life have I ever seen it this bad," she explained. "There was fighting, people being sick, people fainting - all crammed in like sardines. What should have been an hour from landing to Adeje turned into four hours. What a day!" ‌ Paul Doyle LIVE: Liverpool parade suspect in court Our News team has been working around the clock to cover Liverpool parade crash suspect Paul Doyle's appearance at Liverpool Magistrates' Court this morning. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the 53-year-old is accused of two counts of unlawful and malicious wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two counts of causing unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. ‌ He is also accused of two counts of attempted unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and one count of dangerous driving. Doyle shook his head in the dock as the prosecutor told the judge he drove "deliberately at the crowd" and "used his vehicle as a weapon". Police previously said 79 people were injured when a car drove into supporters on Water Street at around 6pm on Monday, with seven people still in hospital when Merseyside Police revealed his charges yesterday. Doyle will appear at court again on August 14 for plea and trial preparation hearing. ‌ Prince Harry 'so disappointed' by Diana sisters' blunt take on Meghan There's never a quiet day for Prince Harry, and it has emerged that the Duke of Sussex"was so disappointed" when he introduced Meghan Markle to Princess Diana's two sisters, our Royal team reported. Harry had hoped Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes would have similarities to his mother, who died when Harry was just 12. However, although Harry believed Diana would have been "over the moon" about his relationship with Meghan, he was upset with her sisters' reaction. They reportedly did not see the same character traits in the two women and Harry, 40, suffered a further blow as Lady McCorquodale and Lady Fellowes "thought Meghan would not fit in with the Royal Family." Regardless, Harry married his partner soon after in 2018 and has gone onto have two children with the former actress. The insights have come about in the book Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors, written by royal biographer Tom Bower. He penned: "Harry assumed that Diana's family and friends would see a similarity between Diana and his fiancée. Both, he said, shared the same problems. He was so disappointed."

In this Thursday's Mirror Daily Digest, we've pulled together the biggest stories of the day from pictures of the man accused of driving into fans in Liverpool to Keir Starmer's insult at Nigel Farage Welcome to the Mirror's Daily Digest, where we'll be pulling together all the biggest stories of the day from our News, Showbiz, Health teams and more. This Thursday, we're featuring everything from the man accused of ramming his car into crowds at the Liverpool victory parade to Keir Starmer's speech where he branded Nigel Farage" Liz Truss 2.0". We've also got the latest on Eamonn Holmes' health update after the presenter fell off his chair live on GB News, and the new strain of coronavirus which has prompted the World Health Organisation (WHO) to issue an alert. ‌ 'Family man' charged over Liverpool crash horror pictured for first time ‌ This evening, our News team published pictures of the man accused of ramming his car into crowds at the Liverpool victory parade, injuring almost 80 people. Paul Doyle, 53, of West Derby, Liverpool, is accused of dangerous driving, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, wounding with intent to cause injury, and attempting to cause GBH with intent when he ploughed into football fans celebrating Liverpool FC's title win. He is due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates' court on Friday. The dad of three was finally identified today, as detectives were given more time to quiz him over the incident on Monday night. Police were stationed outside his family home this afternoon, where Doyle lives with his wife and their three sons. Loved-up pictures on social media show the family enjoying various holidays including Disneyland Florida, Dubai and at the beach. ‌ Starmer humiliates Farage with one of worst political insults imaginable This afternoon, our Politics team attended Keir Starmer's speech in the north west where the Prime Minister branded Nigel Farage" Liz Truss 2.0". In a ferocious attack, the PM accused the Reform UK leader of planning a 'mad experiment' that will hammer family finances. ‌ He compared Reform's uncosted pledges to Tory disaster Liz Truss, who triggered market chaos and sent mortgage rates rocketing with her tax-slashing mini-Budget. But Mr Farage hit back, accusing the PM of "Project Fear 2.0". The PM said the promises proved Mr Farage cannot be trusted, saying: "He set out economic plans that contained billion upon billions of pounds of completely unfunded spending, precisely the sort of irresponsible splurge that sent your mortgage costs, your bills and the cost of living through the roof. It's Liz Truss all over again." He added: "What Nigel Farage is doing is Liz Truss 2.0, same promises of billions and billions of pounds in unfunded cuts with exactly the same results. I feel very strongly it's my responsibility to protect working people from being put through that ever again." ‌ Eamonn Holmes issues heartbreaking health update In other news, our Showbiz team covered Eamonn Holmes' heartbreaking health update just days after he fell off his chair live on GB News. It comes after the 65-year-old was taken to the hospital earlier in the month following a fall at his home where he had to ring an ambulance for help. ‌ Sharing his dismay at his ongoing issues, Eamonn took to social media to share a picture of himself looking healthy and sprightly from just three years ago. The presenter said it 'made him sad' to see his decline as he told fans: "I could walk then." In a bid to stay positive, Eamonn added that he was motivated to "redouble my efforts." The presenter has been working hard on his rehabilitation after undergoing spinal surgery in 2022 for chronic back pain caused by three slipped discs. Over the last year he has been seen using a walking aid and a wheelchair as his mobility has become effected. ‌ Mum-of-six 'murdered by wanted man as she walked her dog' An on-the-run man who was living off-grid to avoid being recalled to prison killed a grandmother who was out walking her dog in a "vicious and brutal attack", a court has heard. Anita Rose, 57, was subjected to "numerous kicks, stamps and blows being delivered to her face, head and body", prosecutor Christopher Paxton KC told a trial at Ipswich Crown Court. Roy Barclay, 56, of no fixed address, denies her murder. ‌ Opening the case for the prosecution today, Mr Paxton said mum-of-six Anita left her home in Brantham, Suffolk, to walk her dog Bruce on July 24 last year. She was found by passers-by but died four days later at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge on July 28. Mr Paxton said: "After she left home and before 6.25 that morning, Anita Rose was subject to a vicious and brutal attack with numerous kicks, stamps and blows being delivered to her face, head and body. Found by passers-by, help was called for but on July 28 Anita Rose died in Addenbrooke's Hospital from the injuries she received." ‌ Infectious new Covid strain hits three holiday destinations Meanwhile, our Health team has been following the new strain of coronavirus which has prompted the World Health Organisation (WHO) to issue an alert. The new strain is spreading rapidly in multiple countries, including three destinations popular with UK holidaymakers. An expert has explained the symptoms of the new strain, saying it appears to be able to spread more easily and quickly than previous variants. The WHO has warned over a surge in Covid cases with the new variant now responsible for more than 10 per cent of all infections. The WHO has designated the new strain NB.1.8.1 as a 'variant under monitoring' amid concern about the sharp rise in cases. The strain has been detected in multiple countries, including Australia, the US and possibly the UK.

Footage of the incident showed the Ford people carrier drive through a packed crowd of football supporters, injuring nearly 50 people. A total of 20 people were treated for injuries at the scene in Liverpool city centre, with a further 27 taken to hospital. North West Ambulance Service confirmed two people have been seriously injured, including one child. A 53-year-old man from the Liverpool area has been arrested in relation to the incident. Merseyside Police are not treating the crash as an act of terrorism. In a public briefing held this afternoon, Assistant Chief Constable Sims said the driver is believed to have followed an ambulance going to treat a person having a heart attack. He remains in police custody and was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs. Speaking at a press conference, Sims said: "Following the incident yesterday, I can confirm on behalf of the National Health Service that we are aware of 50 people who were treated at hospital for ongoing treatment. Of those 11 remain in hospital for ongoing treatment. They are all in a stable condition, and I am pleased to say that they appear to be recovering well." ‌ Mysterious UK outbreak leaves five in hospital This morning, our Health team reported that five people had been hospitalised and 20 had fallen ill - including 13 children - after an outbreak of salmonella. According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the infection is linked to Salmonella saintpaul, which was the cause of an outbreak in 2023 where 90 people fell ill after eating cantaloupe. ‌ There is no indication that melons are the cause of the current outbreak, which has seen cases in the North West of England, the West Midlands, the South West and the East of England. The UKHSA said people started falling ill on February 20 this year and those affected have ranged from one year old to 88. Gauri Godbole, deputy director of gastrointestinal infections at the UKHSA, said: "UKHSA is investigating a small outbreak of Salmonella and no cases have been identified since March 2025. "Gastrointestinal bacteria, such as Salmonella, can be spread from person to person as well as from food, so anyone with diarrhoea or vomiting should wash their hands thoroughly after using the bathroom and avoid handling food or preparing food for others where possible. Please avoid returning to work or sending unwell children to school or nursery until at least 48 hours after symptoms have cleared." ‌ X Factor finalist gives birth In other news, an X Factor finalist has announced the birth of her first child in a touching Instagram post. Our Showbiz team reported that Amelia Lily, who rose to fame on the singing competition in 2011, had given birth to her baby daughter after keeping her pregnancy a secret. ‌ She recently got engaged to her partner Eddie and the couple shared the happy news about their baby's arrival. She wrote on Instagram: "The best secret we've ever kept… Myself and Eddie would like to introduce our daughter. Pearl McQueen. Born 23.05.25 at 10:11am weighing a little chunky 8.12lbs. "9 months of carrying you Pearl and being in our little pregnancy bubble. Now you are finally here. We've had a bit of a rough start but we're on the mend now. I cannot thank all the midwife's, nurses and consultants at James Cook hospital enough for looking after us both. I'll forever be grateful. Baby Pearl, you have made all our dreams come true." ‌ Lionesses legend Mary Earps in England retirement shock Football fans woke up to the shock news that England goalkeeper Mary Earps has announced a retirement from international football. The decision comes just weeks before the Euro 2025, where the 53-cap star was set to feature in Sarina Wiegman's squad in Switzerland. Earps became an icon in the Lionesses net as she won Euro 2022 and helped England to the World Cup final in consectutive years. The ex- Manchester United shotstopper was named Best FIFA Women's goalkeeper in 2022 and 2023 and was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2023 too. ‌ Announcing her retirement, Earps said: 'I have taken the difficult decision to retire internationally. It has been the greatest honour and privilege of my life, to wear this badge, represent my country and play alongside such an incredible group of players. 'I've spent a long time making this decision and it's not one I've made lightly. For me, ultimately this is the right time for me to step aside and give the younger generation an opportunity to thrive. Winning the EUROs in 2022 was the best day of my life, and I'm rooting for the girls to do it again this summer." Wiegman had planned to select Earps for a place in her squad this summer and saw an important role for the goalkeeper. The Dutch boss admitted she was disappointed with the decision but would happily pay tribute to her charge later this summer. ‌ Exact date mini heatwave set to hit UK After a damp bank holiday weekend, Brits could soon be soaking in the sunshine with temperatures expected to soar to 25C. The return of the mini heatwave follows a recent spell of hot and dry weather where a high pressure system dominated. ‌ Maps from Ventusky are turning orange again by Saturday, May 31, especially for the southeast which will be warmest and these higher temperatures are expected to last into the start of next week. Met Office Meteorologist Becky Mitchell said: 'This week we could see temperatures push to the low 20s in the south, and at the end of the week we can see drier and more settled weather develop in southern England and Wales.' And the outlook from the weather agency for Thursday to Saturday reads: 'Further spells of rain are expected over the next few days, mainly in the north. Sunny spells and scattered showers in the south, and turning increasingly warm.' While BBC weather forecaster Ben Rich said that temperatures could hit the mid-20Cs in the south of England at the end of the week. 'For Friday many areas will see some dry weather and some spells of sunshine but it could well be that our next weather system starts to approach bringing some cloud and some rain in from the west,' he said 'It could be a warm feeling day on Friday with temperatures of 17C to 24C. High pressure tries to hold on across the south and the south east, at the same time low pressure tries to return from the northwest.'

The 133 cardinals involved in the secretive conclave finally reached a verdict. Cardinals had returned to the Sistine Chapel on Thursday to resume voting for a new pope, after a first conclave ballot failed to find a winner and sent black smoke billowing through the chapel chimney. They had to secure the two-thirds majority, or 89 ballots, necessary to become the 267th pope. Casting and counting ballots for a new pope had have taken longer than expected on Wednesday evening because of the large number of cardinals participating and the linguistic diversity among them. The electors hail from 70 countries, and not all speak or understand Italian fluently, which could have slowed down the proceedings if help with translation was needed. BBC Bargain Hunt star charged by police after investigation into terrorist financing This morning, our showbiz team broke the news that Bargain Hunt star Ogheneochuko 'Ochuko' Ojiri has been charged by the Metropolitan Police after an investigation into terrorist financing by officers from the National Terrorist Financial Investigation Unit (NTFIU). ‌ In a statement, the Met said: "Following authorisation from the Crown Prosecution Service, he has been charged with eight counts of failing to make a disclosure during the course of business within the regulated sector, contrary to section 21A of the Terrorism Act 2000." The deal was finally announced this afternoon by Starmer and Trump, with the British PM hailing a huge victory after reaching a historic trade agreement with the US that reduces damaging tariffs. In a press conference in the Oval Office, Donald Trump said the agreement - which the UK Government says will save thousands of jobs - is "so good for both countries". Car export tariffs will reduce from 27.5% to 10% - this will apply to a quota of 100,000 UK cars, almost the total the UK exported last year. The UK steel industry will no longer face tariffs as well. ‌ Speaking from the Oval Office, the US President lavished praise of "terrific" PM Keir Starmer and said the UK is "one of our greatest allies." It comes after Mr Trump teased the move overnight, saying: "This should be a very big and exciting day for the United States of America and the United Kingdom." They are playing 16 shows in North America, and insiders hope they will later come to Europe, including dates in the UK. The show is called The Song Is Over, which is also the name of their new single. Speaking on video link, Roger Daltrey added: 'It will have to come to an end one day.' He said: "Pete (Townshend) is still playing great guitar, the music's still got the vitality that suits it, because it's something about the way Pete's music is written, the way it's shaped, the sentiment behind it, it doesn't seem to age like a lot of rock music does.' Roger added: 'Us out there performing for the last time is a thank you for fans.' ‌ VE Day as it happened live in 1945 as Brits celebrated end of WW2 in Europe Eighty years ago today, millions of Britons took to the streets to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany and the end of World War 2.
