Libya's maritime rescue unit reports 49 drownings in June and July
Libya's maritime rescue authorities have confirmed 49 drowning cases along the country's coastline over the months of June and July, with a majority of the victims identified as Libyan nationals.
According to Misbah Al-Ghaziwi, head of the Maritime Rescue Room, 33 of those who drowned were Libyans. He noted that many of the incidents occurred in unmonitored or abandoned coastal areas, where beachgoers often ignore safety warnings.
'There is a clear disregard for alerts about dangerous sea currents,' Al-Ghaziwi said in remarks to local media.
He also highlighted the limited resources facing rescue teams, calling for increased support to better respond to emergencies. 'We are doing what we can with the capabilities we have,' he added. News Tagged: Drowning
