Senior farmers market voucher distributions cancelled
(WBRE/WYOU) — According to the Area Agency on Aging, the first two Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) voucher distribution events have been cancelled. The announcement comes because the agency has not yet received the vouchers. It was previously revealed that federal funding for the vouchers has been cut. The first two Luzerne/Wyoming County distribution events have been cancelled, including the June 3 event at Misericordia University's MacDowell Hall and the June 5 Kingston Active Adult Center. Woman shot by police while allegedly attacking civilian In Lackawanna County alone, 38,000 farmers market vouchers were requested by the county's agency on aging, the agency in charge of distributing them. Due to the cuts to federal spending, they'll only be getting around 29,000. Under the State Department of Agriculture program, residents over 60 who fall within the program's income requirements are eligible to receive up to five $5 vouchers each to spend at local farmers' markets. University helping families visit their fallen veterans
DALLAS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A local cemetery is still inaccessible by car after its only entrance, a bridge, collapsed into Toby's Creek last month. But with Memorial Day coming up, a nearby university stepped in to lend the community a helping hand. Getting into Fern Knoll Burial Park in Dallas Township has been tough, especially for those with mobility issues. Lower gas prices bringing record Memorial Day weekend travel And while you still can't drive into the cemetery, Misericordia University is making it easier to access for Memorial Day weekend. Inside the cemetery, row after row of American flags, many of them marking the final resting place of a veteran. More than 200 veterans are buried there, some of them died while serving. With the cemetery's only entrance gone, Misericordia University has set up a temporary walking path for anyone looking to visit during the holiday weekend. The path is just across the parking lot from McGowan Hall at 82 Misericordia Way. While the cemetery is still not accessible by car, to one local we spoke with, it's the university's gesture that counts. 'Dallas has always been this wonderful community. Everybody bands together when there's something like this that happens, and again, it's Memorial Day and a lot of people from Dallas their loved ones are here.' stated Dallas resident, Scott Watkins. Now, the cemetery's caretaker tells me they are still working to clear the rubble from Toby's Creek. Once that's done, they plan to build a temporary bridge until a plan is in place to rebuild the original. The caretaker said they're hoping to get grants to pay for the construction.
