Egypt's Annual Urban Inflation Rises to 13.9%
Taarek Refaat Egypt's urban inflation rate accelerated in April, reaching 13.9% year-on-year, compared to 13.6% in March, according to data released Saturday by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). However, on a monthly basis, urban inflation slowed to 1.3% in April, compared to 1.6% in March. This is the second acceleration in inflation figures in the past 7 months. Consumer prices were higher last month and the previous month in August, impacted by increases in fuel and public transportation fares. This was due to a 6.7% increase in electricity, gas, and fuel prices, an 8.6% increase in private transportation prices, an 8.2% increase in transportation services prices, a 1.3% increase in vehicle purchase prices, a 1.2% increase in vegetables, and a 0.5% increase in grains and bread prices. Last April, Egypt raised petroleum product prices for the second time in six months, expecting to achieve savings of EGP 35 billion in the current fiscal year 2024-2025 budget. The price increase included all types of gasoline and diesel, with an increase of EGP 2 per liter. Over the past year, the government moved to raise the prices of several goods and services. Metro and train ticket prices increased in August 2024 by rates ranging from 12.5% to 25%, as part of the country's efforts to reduce subsidies on many essential services and commodities. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. IMF Approves $1 Billion Disbursement to Pakistan
Taarek Refaat The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Board approved a review of Pakistan's loan program on Friday, enabling the disbursement of nearly $1 billion in much-needed financing. It also approved a new $1.4 billion bailout package, despite India's objections. The IMF said in a statement, "The Pakistani authorities have demonstrated strong commitment to program implementation, contributing to improved financing and external conditions and continued economic recovery." It is worth noting that India—which also represents Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh on the IMF's Executive Board—abstained from voting, amid ongoing tensions with Pakistan. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. Train Network "BART" Outage Paralyzes Traffic in San Francisco
Taarek Refaat San Francisco experienced a near-total disruption to public transportation on Friday after a sudden stoppage on its major public transit system, disrupting all BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) trains serving the Bay Area and causing widespread chaos during the morning rush hour. BART announced on its website: "Due to a computer network issue, BART services are suspended systemwide until further notice. Please seek alternative transportation." The shutdown forced tens of thousands of commuters to seek alternative ways to get to work, with images showing heavy traffic on buses and reports of traffic jams on the Golden Gate and Oakland Bay Bridges, vital routes connecting the city to its suburbs. BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost told ABC7 that the problem appears to be related to the system's operation after overnight maintenance, ruling out a cyberattack at this time. The San Francisco train outage coincides with another outage that hit busy Newark Airport, one of three major airports serving the greater New York area. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said a communications failure affected the Philadelphia Air Traffic Control Center, temporarily disrupting radar and aircraft communications over Newark. The failure occurred at 3:55 a.m. and lasted only about 90 seconds, according to a brief official statement. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. Chinese Cargo Ships Pause Sailing to US ports
Taarek Refaat Chinese cargo ships have stopped carrying cargo to two major U.S. West Coast ports for the first time since the pandemic, West Coast port officials told CNN. Six days ago, 41 ships were scheduled to depart China for the San Pedro Bay complex, which includes the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach in California, yet, that number never arrived at the U.S. ports. U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war imposed massive tariffs on most Chinese imports last month. This has led to fewer ships at sea carrying fewer goods to US ports. Officials are concerned not only about the lack of ships leaving China, but also about the rapid decline in that number. The nation's busiest port, Long Beach, is experiencing a sharp decline in cargo volume, 35%-40% lower than usual. The Port of Los Angeles saw a 31% drop in cargo volume this week, and the Port of New York and Jersey is also preparing for a slowdown in cargo arrivals. Last Wednesday, the Port of Seattle announced it was devoid of any container ships, another unusual occurrence not seen since the pandemic. However, that share has declined from 72% in 2016 as retailers shifted away from China due to escalating trade tensions. However, China remains a major source of imports to the United States. Maersk, the world's second-largest shipping company, told CNN that shipment volumes between the US and China have fallen 30%-40% compared to normal levels. US and Chinese trade representatives met in Geneva this weekend for their first face-to-face meeting in an attempt to defuse the trade war. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. Nigerian State Bans Fuel Sales to Curb Jihadist Attacks
Taarek Refaat Borno State, located in northeastern Nigeria and known as a hotbed of jihadist insurgency, has announced a ban on fuel sales in several areas, a move aimed at restricting the movement of armed groups that have been active in the region for years. In an official statement, the state governor Babagana Umara Zulum said he had ordered "the immediate imposition of a ban on the sale of fuel in Bama town and other parts of its local authority," adding that the decision was part of a "strategy to support counter-insurgency operations." The decision is expected to limit the militants' ability to move and carry out attacks using vehicles, particularly in areas near the Sambisa Forest, the main stronghold of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), a splinter group from Boko Haram. Bama is the state's second-largest city after the capital, Maiduguri, and has witnessed bloody episodes of conflict in recent years, most notably the Boko Haram invasion in 2014, which killed hundreds of civilians. This decision comes as northeastern Nigeria experiences a new wave of violence. Increasing attacks since April have killed more than 100 people. The conflict, which began more than 16 years ago, continues, claiming the lives of more than 40,000 people and displacing nearly two million. Borno State, where Boko Haram emerged in 2009, remains a flashpoint for security tensions in Africa's most populous country, with security challenges persisting despite repeated military operations. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 ..
