Natalie Portman Says Queen Amidala and Jackie O. Would Both Wear Dior's New Perfume
"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." In the decade-plus that Natalie Portman has been the face of the iconic Miss Dior perfume franchise, the fragrance itself has evolved no less than seven times. Some iterations are more floral or more powdery or more sweet, but at the heart of them all is the idea of capturing youth in a bottle. The brand-new Miss Dior Essence, created by Dior perfume creation director Francis Kurkdjian, pays respect to the very first Miss Dior perfume from 1947, but with a fruity, near-gourmand twist that is so Dior Essence $134.00 at 'In the previous renditions, Miss Dior lacked a little bit of the relevancy compared to the demand of the younger generation,' Kurkdjian says. He describes Miss Dior Essence as mouth-watering and juicy, with an almost lipstick or lipgloss quality to it, thanks to the 'jammy' blackberry and elderflower accord, as well as a fruitier jasmine sambac note and woody base. Ahead of the launch of the new scent and campaign, Bazaar caught up with Portman to discuss her evolving partnership with Miss Dior, her favorite fruity treat, and her excitement to get back into the rom-com genre. I think it's so bold. It's such a bold, concentrated, floral, fruity, woody smell, but it's still so romantic and feminine. Probably Jackie and maybe Queen Amidala. I just think that they're bold, idealistic women, but also very, you know, in love. And I think that combination of being able to be a strong leader and true to your ideals and also romantic is the essence of the essence. I love talking about food. There's actually a great place in Paris called Fruttini that does these sorbets of fruit eaten inside the fruit. So you can get, like, pineapple sorbet inside a pineapple, peach sorbet inside a peach. It's very beautiful. I love the coconut. I love everything citrus, so probably like a yuzu or some kind of lemony, citrusy scent. I mean, obviously, you wouldn't want, like, a cheese perfume? It's really incredible to get to grow with it and evolve with it and show the different phases that a woman goes through. I think it's really incredible to get to have these relationships too with Dior for so long, where now, when I go back, it really feels like friends and like family. There's a very warm feeling. To play and have fun and enjoy yourself, and use it to express yourself, and enjoy and make yourself happy, and not try to please. I mean, my daughter is constantly showing me stuff because she's, like, very good at makeup. So she's always showing me how to blend two lipsticks or, like, put a highlighter on my cheekbone—those kinds of things. I'm so excited. Romantic comedies are my favorite movies to watch. Lena Dunham is one of my favorite writer-directors around right now, so I feel very lucky to get to work with her. She's written an incredible, incredible script, and we have a cast that I'm just crazy about, between Rashida Jones, Meg Ryan, Mark Ruffalo, and Tucker Pillsbury, who is in his first movie. It's just very, very exciting. So, yeah, I can't wait to start shooting that this summer. I sure hope so. We just need a lot of joy and dreaming in the world. And what better to dream about than, you know, connections with other humans? We filmed a movie called The Gallerist earlier this year, which Cathy Yan directed and I acted in with Jenna Ortega, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sterling Brown, and Zach Galifianakis. Really exciting cast. So that'll be out later this year or early next year. And we produced a movie with my company called Arco, an animated film from a first-time director that we just premiered at Cannes, and that will probably be out later this year as well. Have your fragrance preferences changed since you starred in the first campaign? I think I've been more attuned to the scents and how they change subtly from iteration to iteration. And it's been really incredible to get to visit the flower fields in Grasse and the laboratory where they, you know, have all of the different scents from all over the world that they put together. I've been really, really lucky to experience that. I think it's just very connected to the spirit of Catherine Dior. That was Christian Dior's sister, who was a very courageous and daring resistance fighter in World War II, when he created Miss Dior to honor her and the way she brought beauty into the world. And I think it's exactly the kind of icon and inspiration we need right now. Natalie Portman on the New Miss Dior and Her Viral Rihanna Encounter From Paris Fashion Week
Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. After almost 15 years as the face of multiple iterations of Miss Dior, Natalie Portman has become nearly synonymous with the scent. She has fronted the French fashion house's eponymous fragrance since 2011, when she starred in the Miss Dior Chérie campaign. Now, Portman is the face of Miss Dior Essence, the brand's newest fragrance launch, and she's reflecting on her years-long collaboration with Dior. 'It's been incredible to get to be with all the artists and creators,' Portman exclusively tells ELLE. 'To really start feeling like part of that family has been incredible. You definitely have that outsider feeling when you start, and as the years go by, you feel part of it. When I go to work, it becomes like going to see family. It feels very warm and at home, like we're creating something together.' The new Miss Dior Essence, imagined by Francis Kurkdjian, creative director of Dior Perfumes, is a fruity take on a gourmand. It leads with juicy blackberry notes and elderberry and blooms into floral jasmine and heady oak. Much like Portman, the scent has evolved with the house, 'like a liberated girl who dares to wear the vibrant looks and fuchsia miniskirts now seen on the catwalks of Dior shows,' according to Kurkdjian. Ahead, Portman talks to ELLE about her earliest scent memory, which of her iconic characters would wear the new Miss Dior Essence, and the viral interaction she had at Paris Fashion Week with Rihanna, who declared her 'one of the hottest bitches in Hollywood forever.' I always think that what you eat is the most central part of your beauty routine. I make sure to drink lots of water, and I eat a vegan diet, which is helpful. I wash my face with Tata Harper cleanser; I use the Dior cream as a moisturizer, and that's it. Kind of simple. I love fragrance. I love the smell of products too. The Dior cream smells of roses; the Tata Harper has a very distinctive jasmine smell. Then, of course, I use perfume for different occasions. On a day out I might use the Miss Dior Essence, and at night I might use the Miss Dior Parfum. I remember being in citrus groves as a kid, and the smell of orange blossom is still one of my favorites. I love how concentrated and bold it is. It really has all of that fruity, woody, floral quality, while also being very feminine. It gives a strong personality while still feeling romantic. It makes me feel bold, daring, and feminine—it reminds me of being in love with love, and wanting that deep, passionate, wild experience. The music helps a lot—playing the music that's in the scene and being in these incredible locations, like the library or the rooftop. And then, of course, the scent itself helps me get in character. I feel like Jackie O. would wear this fragrance. Maybe Queen Amidala. Oh, it was such an incredible moment for me personally. I admire her so much, and I was shocked that it became something people paid attention to—I didn't even realize anyone caught it on camera. It was amazing to meet her and to have her be so kind. She's such an incredible artist and woman. It was a very sweet, very nice moment. I think I used to think of beauty as something to conform to—an ideal to please other people. Now it's much more about bringing out my own individuality and making myself happy, making myself feel good. This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.
