Gabriella Carballo on leaving a year of medicine behind for MUPH: 'The risk was worth it'
Gabriella Carballo boldly chose to set aside a year of practicing medicine to pursue her pageantry dreams and join Miss Universe Philippines, where she was crowned Miss Eco International Philippines. In an event at Surge Gateway on Friday, Gabbi reflected on her journey, sharing that her heart's posture is 'definitely in the right place right now.' 'It's in a good place and I say that because it's really that since before I joined Miss Universe Philippines and until now, not a single thing has changed in the way that I view myself. I'm not saying it hasn't elevated and it also hasn't gone down,' she said. Gabbi thinks it feels that way because she has been guided to this moment very well. 'I left behind a year of medicine to come here and that was a risk that I had to take but clearly, the risk was worth it because I was able to get a crown and because of that I don't take it lightly and I take this role as really a place to inspire other people that you don't have to pick one. You can do both,' she said. The doctor and beauty queen will aim for a back-to-back Miss Eco International win for the Philippines after Alexie Brooks won the 2025 title in April. In a previous interview with GMA News Online, she said that she doesn't feel pressured. 'For me, I think pressure comes when you don't understand your responsibility. And for me, I understand my responsibility very well. I know that I have people to inspire. I know that I do have a wonderful queen to follow up,' she said. —Carby Rose Basina/JCB, GMA Integrated News

#SHOWBIZ: Actress Amy Nur Tinie: A 'Datuk' offered me to be his third wife
KUALA LUMPUR: Actress Amy Nur Tinie has revealed that she was once propositioned to become the third wife of a man with the title of 'Datuk.' The 29-year-old actress and former beauty queen recounted the incident, which occurred about six years ago during her active participation in beauty pageants. "Before I ventured into acting, I was heavily involved in beauty pageants," Amy Nur Tinie explained in a recent news report. "The expenses associated with competing abroad were substantial, so I sought sponsorship from a corporate entity." "This particular 'Datuk' offered to sponsor me, but on the condition that I become his third wife," she said. "He also offered other material comforts, including a house. My mother's response was firm: she wasn't about to sell me off." "The man was the same age as my father! Anyone driven solely by financial gain would have accepted such an offer," added the artiste, who was crowned Miss Eco International in 2019 in Egypt. Despite her entry into the entertainment industry stemming from beauty pageants, with acting opportunities arising somewhat fortuitously, Tinie is determined to establish herself as a serious actress. "I want to move beyond the image of a beauty queen. I want people to recognise me as a versatile actress, not just a pretty face," she said.

Philippines' Alexie Brooks crowned Miss Eco International 2025
The Philippines has claimed another global crown as Alexie Brooks was named Miss Eco International 2025 during the coronation night held in Alexandria, Egypt. Triumphing over 36 delegates worldwide, Brooks brought home the country's third Miss Eco International title, succeeding Ukraine's Angelina Usanova. She topped the competition ahead of Yulinar Fitrani of Indonesia (1st runner-up), Yelyzaveta Adamska of Ukraine (2nd runner-up), Cynthia Murillo of the USA (3rd runner-up), and Victoria Repollo Inglis of the United Kingdom (4th runner-up). The Iloilo-born beauty dazzled in a Rian Fernandez gown during the coronation night, hand-embroidered with crystals and adorned with the traditional solihiya weave—a nod to Filipino craftsmanship and heritage. Her national costume 'Mangayon,' made by Tata Blas Pinuela, paid tribute to the Philippine Eagle, symbolizing strength, resilience, and environmental guardianship. The golden ensemble, adorned with leaf motifs and crystal beads, earned her the Best in National Costume award. In the final Q&A, Brooks impressed the judges with her message of hope and action for the environment, emphasizing the importance of individual efforts in preserving the planet for future generations. As the new Miss Eco International, Brooks is set to lead global campaigns on sustainability, eco-tourism, and cultural pride.
