Miss Hong Kong Pageant loses another contestant over career conflicts

A barrister has withdrawn from the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, citing conflicts with her legal career among a number of reasons, while organising broadcaster TVB has said it 'respected' her decision. In a post on social media, Kimberlie Chu wrote: 'Farewell Miss Hong Kong! I've withdrawn!' Chu, who also took part in the contest in 2021 but was eliminated at the top 28 stage, said she had received many positive messages from friends since signing up again this year. She is the second notable contestant to drop out of this year's pageant, after Hong Kong's youngest district councillor, 24-year-old Angel Chong Nga-ting, withdrew last month following controversy over her participation as a serving public representative. Chu added she was 'incredibly grateful' for her friends' support and the attention from the media. A TVB spokeswoman said on Friday that it 'fully respected' Chu's decision to prioritise her legal career. 'Decisions like these are deeply personal and often require considerable thought,' she said.

#SHOWBIZ: HK-based actress Natalie Ng divorces after 14 years of marriage

HONG KONG: Actress Natalie Ng has made a surprising revelation in her new autobiography: she and her husband, financial expert David Chan, have amicably divorced after 14 years of marriage. The couple, who met while studying in the United States, married in 2011 and have two daughters, Scarlet, 10, and Season, eight. In a recent interview with Ming Pao Weekly, Ng – who experienced a recurrence of breast cancer last August – disclosed that her marriage had been troubled long before her diagnosis. The 50-year-old shared that she and Chan had undergone multiple separations and reconciliations over the years. "Perhaps we married back then because it felt like the right time. Over the years, we separated and reunited, but the underlying issues were never truly resolved. Ultimately, we had to make a decision," she explained. Despite the split, Ng – the second runner-up in the 1998 Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant – emphasised that she and her ex-husband maintain a good relationship. "There's no right or wrong. I hope everyone refrains from making unnecessary speculation. Some people are simply better off as friends rather than spouses," she added. Ng's health deteriorated in March when her cancer advanced to Stage Four. Fortunately, following treatment, her cancer index has since returned to normal. In a recent video uploaded to social media, Ng stated that she is now focused on rebuilding her muscles and prioritising a healthier lifestyle.

Reaction to Angel Chong's Miss Hong Kong bid should spark reflection

Despite having been part of our lives for a long time, beauty pageants have come in for heavy criticism in recent years for objectifying women and reducing them to being judged only on their outward appearance. Despite reforms aimed at improving social perception and what constitutes 'beauty' , they remain controversial. So, when Angel Chong Nga-ting, a 24-year-old local district councillor, decided to put herself out there and enter the contest for the title of Miss Hong Kong, some in the community lost their mind. Chong has every right to make such choices. She is an adult and can do so without needing to seek approval. Or don't we actually believe it when we tell the girls and women in our lives that they can be whatever they want and to chase their dreams Chong's decision to withdraw from the pageant is probably the result of pressure from her political party, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB). Veteran political commentator Sonny Lo Shiu-hing said, 'Having a district council member suddenly run for the Miss Hong Kong Pageant does not look good for the party's image and its preparation for the election. From the perspective of the largest political party [in Hong Kong], it expects party members to stick to party discipline.' The problem with this is that, last time I checked, competing to be Miss Hong Kong was still perfectly legal, even for district councillors. The judgment is being passed because Chong's entry 'looks bad' for the DAB's image, party discipline and – according to Chong, who said she pulled out to protect the district council's image – the council itself. There is no question about how Chong's actions have been perceived. However, if people are rejecting her decision because of the superficiality of beauty pageants and how her participation might reflect on those she associates with, aren't her critics just as superficial?
