A Manitoban has officially begun their reign as Miss Indigenous Canada.
Gena Boubard, who is from Sagkeeng First Nation, took home the crown over the weekend.
In a social media post, Boubard said the title is a 'tremendous honour,' adding that the victory represents a celebration of community, culture and the spectrum of Indigenous identities.
'As a Two-Spirit person, this moment holds even deeper meaning,' the post said.
'Representation is important, and I carry this title with deep gratitude and honour. Beyond representation, this is for every Two-Spirit Youth who deserves to see themselves reflected, respected, and celebrated.'
Boubard is a former Miss Southern Manitoba World 2018 who also competed at Miss World Canada. They currently work as a professional makeup artist and serve as an advocate for Indigenous 2SLGBTQIA+ youth empowerment.
According to its website, Miss Indigenous Canada is a three-day event that serves as an outlet for young Indigenous people to celebrate their achievements, make connections and serve their communities.
