It's ‘Mission: Possible' for ‘Mission: Impossible' Star Esai Morales

Playing the arch-nemesis to one of the most beloved action heroes in film franchise history can be a thankless job, especially when the champion soaks up all the glory. But don't tell that to veteran actor Esai Morales, who returns as Gabriel, the antagonist to Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt in this summer's upcoming 'Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning,' opening May 23. The truth is, Morales appreciates the challenge presented to him by his villainous character. For without Gabriel, there would be no Ethan Hunt to root for. 'The better you play the bad guy, the better you make the good guy look,' said Morales in a recent interview with The Epoch Times. And Morales should know, having first appeared as Gabriel in 2023's spy action film 'Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One.' 'We all have a role,' Morales said mischievously. 'You don't want a bad guy who's a pushover, then what have you done as a hero? You see how that works?' Related Stories 5/16/2025 4/11/2025 Over a 40-year career, the Brooklyn born actor of Puerto Rican ancestry has stayed a chameleon, leaping from the villains into lighter parts and projects, crafting characters in big screen hits, including 'La Bamba' and 'Bad Boys' and small screen powerhouses, such as 'NYPD Blue' and 'Ozark.' There's no secret to an actor's longevity in show business, Morales emphasized. He draws a comparison of a working actor's life to a shop owner friend's reality. The store would be 'empty for hours, and then one person would come in, and for 15 minutes it was packed beyond belief,' he said. 'And then it was empty again.' Acting work, like the store's customers, 'comes in waves,' Morales said, and 'it's all about frequency.' It takes riding those 'waves' to sustain as successfully as he has since graduating from New York's High School of Performing Arts. It goes back to a dream he had as a kid. 'At about 12 or 13, I saw this film, 'Dog Day Afternoon' with Al Pacino in it. He was so mesmerizing,' Morales recalled. 'I elbowed my friend and I said: 'That's what I'm gonna do. This is what I want to do.'' To make that vision come true, Morales said it has not just been about talent. 'It's opportunity meets preparation meets luck,' he said. It's luck that brought Morales the 'Mission: Impossible' role. He said that while in Puerto Rico, 'shooting a very small labor of love indie'—which he had agreed to do in part because it allowed him to spend time with his mother, who had retreated there during an illness before she died in 2019—he got the fortuitous phone call. He recalled one of his favorite quotes to explain the situation: 'Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.' When another 'brilliant actor' had a contractual conflict and had to give up the role due to delays in the 'Mission' production, he said, 'that opened an opportunity' for him to jump in. 'I think my work in 'Ozark' may have had something to do with it,' Morales said, reflecting on the 'talent' part of it. 'I think they wanted to get somebody who was kind of antithetical to our hero. And who could bring the gravitas, who can bring a sense of danger,' he said. 'It was also destiny to some degree that I was able to be at the right place at the right time, and the filmmakers thought of me.' Esai Morales Courtesy of Filip Shobot In an actor's world, however, security is never guaranteed, regardless of your last great gig. In one day, out the next; hot, then cold. Morales is always thinking about his 'Plan B.' 'The great thing about being an actor is that in preparing for your roles, you get the chance to dabble in other things, you get a chance to see what it's like, you do your research, and you try other things,' he said. He's learned that he's 'a great connector of people,' which has him thinking about taking up acting coaching. 'I coach my friends for free. And a lot of them say, 'Dude, I paid $500 for what you just gave me an hour,'' Morales said. 'I'm good at what I know, which is creating characters and bringing veracity and responding truthfully under imaginary circumstances.' Outside of show business, Morales also sees a place for himself in the information world. He wants to create an online space for people to come to, and to be a resource of knowledge and truth. 'I'm talking to people about promoting my own line of products or other people's products that I live by,' Morales said. 'I'm a certain age—62—that is not supposed to be running around and playing tennis as long and as hard as I play. I wear out people half my age, and that's valuable,' he said. 'I want to help create a store of sorts. 'This is what works for me, what works for you, a clearinghouse of information I can share.' No matter what lies ahead for Morales, whether on the big screen, small screen, or out in the coaching, business, and information world, he's certain of his future. 'My plan is to grow, to love, to achieve, to be surprised, to leave myself a little open for the unexpected, to have a bit of a plan—which is to do as much as I humanly can, to bring as much love and joy to the people around me, and to make a living while I do that.'

Mission Impossible 8 Box Office India Early Estimates Day 1: Tom Cruise's comeback film set to net Rs 17 crore on Saturday

Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning Box Office Early Estimates Day 1: Mission: Impossible 8, the highly anticipated movie from the Mission Impossible franchise, is finally here. Headlined by Tom Cruise, it serves as the final installment of the series. Also starring Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and others, Mission: Impossible 8 looks to open at a net Rs 17 crore. Officially titled Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning, the new release has kickstarted its theatrical run on a phenomenal note. Early estimates suggest that the Tom Cruise starrer will collect Rs 17 crore on its opening day. The double-digit figure is a solid start for the action spy thriller. Mission: Impossible 8 will now become the biggest opener of the Mission Impossible franchise. The eighth part of the series will also surpass the opening day figure of Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One. Mission: Impossible 7 had opened at Rs 12.25 crore during its release in 2023. Notably, the seventh installment of the franchise was a Wednesday release. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning is competing with Raid 2, Kesari Chapter 2: The Untold Story of Jallianwala Bagh, and Final Destination: Bloodlines at the Indian box office. The Raid sequel also opened at Rs 17 crore on the first day of its release. The Akshay Kumar-starrer opened at Rs 7 crore and the supernatural horror movie minted Rs 5.25 crore on Day 1. The opening of Mission: Impossible 8 would have been Rs 3 crore to Rs 4 crore less if it had hit the screens on Friday or Wednesday, like Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One did. Released on over 3,000 screens in India, Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning is distributed by Viacom 18. The makers of the eighth installment of the Tom Cruise-led movie have targeted English-language audiences with premium format shows in tier-one cities. The Hindi-dubbed versions are being screened in tier-two and tier-three cities in our nation. The new release should collect around Rs 45 crore, including Saturday and Sunday, while aiming to enter the Rs 100 crore club at the Indian box office. The filming of Mission Impossible—The Final Reckoning had begun in 2022 in the United Kingdom. It was also shot in Malta, South Africa and Norway. The Mission: Impossible 8 team faced production delays due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. The makers resumed its shoot after two years in March 2024 and finished its filming in November the same year. Made on a massive budget of USD 400 million, Mission Impossible—The Final Reckoning is touted as one of the most expensive films ever made in the cinema. Mission: Impossible 8 has the potential to become the highest grossing film of the franchise in India. As of now, Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One tops the list with a lifetime net collection of Rs 106 crore in our country. The eighth installment of the Mission Impossible franchise will have to surpass the business of its direct sequel, Mission Impossible 7, to achieve this feat. Backed under the banner of Paramount Pictures, Mission Impossible—The Final Reckoning marks the theatrical return of Tom Cruise after two years since the release of Mission: Impossible 7. Cruise reprises his role as Impossible Missions Force (IMF) agent Ethan Hunt. The plot of Christopher McQuarrie's latest helmer begins two months after the events from Dead Reckoning. In Mission: Impossible 8, Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt resumes his journey to destroy The Entity, a dangerous artificial intelligence that threatens to destroy humanity. With his mission, Hunt has to prevent the global catastrophe along with other agents in the team. Mission Impossible—The Final Reckoning will conclude the Mission Impossible franchise, which has had seven installments earlier. For the uninitiated, the American spy action franchise is based on the 1966 television series of the same name, which was created by Bruce Geller. Starring Tom Cruise in the lead role as Ethan Hunt, Mission: Impossible, the first part of the series, was released in 1996. Mission: Impossible 2, the second installment of the franchise, arrived in theaters in 2000. This was followed by Mission: Impossible III, which was released in 2006. Other movies of the franchise include Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which hit the screens in 2011, 2015, and 2018, respectively. ‘Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning' Review: The Cult of Tom Cruise

'Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning' (opening May 23) features a key in the form of a cross, a St. Christopher medal and references to Noah's Ark but reserves its reverence for its onscreen savior, messiah and chosen one. 'A Tom Cruise production,' the credits tell us, and you won't forget it for a single moment. That need not be a bad thing. The producer-star delivered the two best offerings in the series since the original 1996 feature with 2018's 'Mission: Impossible—Fallout' and 2023's 'Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One' (calling the latest edition Part Two might have been a subtitle too many). This time, though, the story falters.

"Spider-Man 4" Gets New Release Date

Yara Sameh Sony has moved the release for Tom Holland's fourth 'Spider-Man' installment by one week, shifting it from July 24, 2026 to a new date of July 31, 2026. The Marvel entry is now due for launch two weeks after Universal's July 17, 2026 release of 'The Odyssey,' Christopher Nolan's next movie which also stars Holland. Along with giving Holland some breathing room from opening two prospective blockbusters within a week of one another, the adjustment also has key repercussions for exhibitor operations. Before Sony's scheduling change, the next live-action 'Spider-Man' would have released just one week after 'The Odyssey.' That film continues Nolan's decades-long relationship with Imax, shooting with the company's powerful cameras and negotiating a dedicated theatrical window in its premium auditoriums. Presumably, Sony is also looking to release the new 'Spider-Man' to Imax and other premium large format screens, as it has with its previous Marvel Comics adaptations. With this new 'Spider-Man' date, 'The Odyssey' now has two weeks of play without a wide release that would contend for Imax real estate. Such a pile-up occurred in July 2023, when Paramount's 'Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning' (né 'Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One') played Imax auditoriums for only a little more than a week before Universal and Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' took over venues. It took a few years after the 2021 release of the multiverse-spanning 'Spider-Man: No Way Home,' but Sony finally added Holland's next outing as Peter Parker to its theatrical slate four months ago. Destin Daniel Cretton is directing. The film is expected to begin production this summer, though no casting details have been announced beyond Holland. It remains unclear if Zendaya, who has played love interest MJ in all three Holland entries, is returning for this fourth entry. It is known, however, that Zendaya will appear in Nolan's 'The Odyssey,' starring alongside Holland. The adaptation of Homer's time-proven ancient Greek epic poem began production just weeks ago, with Universal releasing a first look at Matt Damon in the lead role of Odysseus. The film also stars Mia Goth, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo.
