Over 4 Cr women benefit from PM Matru Vandana Yojana; 72 lakh registered under Mission Poshan 2.0

New Delhi, Aug 8 (UNI) Over four crore beneficiaries have received maternity benefits under Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), while more than 72 lakh pregnant women have registered themselves as beneficiaries under Mission Poshan 2.0. Sharing this information in the Lok Sabha in reply to a question today, the Minister of State for Women and Child Development Savitri Thakur said that under National Health Mission (NHM), Government of India has undertaken the number of steps to provide maternal health services including the reduction of prevalence of anaemia and low birth weight babies among the mothers, including tribal mothers, for all States/UTs across the country. The minister further elaborated the schemes which include Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan, Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA), and Anemia Mukt Bharat (AMB). Under the 15th Finance Commission, various components like Anganwadi services, Poshan Abhiyaan and Scheme for Adolescent girls (14-18 years in Aspirational Districts and North-Eastern region) have been subsumed under the umbrella Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 (Mission Poshan 2.0) to address the challenge of malnutrition, she stated in the assembly. Stating that in order to beat the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition by adopting a life cycle approach, the Minister said that under Mission Poshan 2.0, Supplementary Nutrition is one of the six services provided through the platform of Anganwadi Centres and is provided to Children (6 months to 6 years), Pregnant Women, Lactating Mothers and Adolescent Girls (14 to 18 years in Aspirational Districts of States and North Eastern Region) for 300 days in a year. 'Supplementary nutrition containing 600 calories, 18-20 gms. of protein and micronutrients is provided in the form of Take-Home Ration (THR) for a maximum of 300 days in a year to pregnant women and Adolescent girls,' she added. It was also revealed that the WCD Ministry is also conducting capacity building under Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi initiative, involving a cascading model of training, wherein Master Trainers (namely, District Officers, Block Coordinators and Supervisors) are trained through Savitribai Phule National Institute of Women and Child Development (SPNIWCD), and the master trainers would directly train all Anganwadi Workers in the field. Malnutrition shadow on WCD minister Nirmala Bhuria's backyard Malwa-Nimar

Bhopal: Fresh data from the Centre has placed three districts from the state's Malwa-Nimar belt, home turf of state women and child development minister Nirmala Bhuria, among the 10 worst-affected in the country for child malnutrition. Figures tabled in the Lok Sabha on July 25 show that 42.54% of children attending anganwadis in Dhar are underweight, ranking it third in the country. Khargone (formerly West Nimar) follows with 36.19%, and Barwani with 36.04%. The findings underscore a grim irony: the state's WCD minister hails from this very region. Bhuria, who is from Petlawad in Jhabua district, leads the state's nutrition drive while the crisis remains most acute in her own political backyard. Nationally, Nandurbar in Maharashtra tops the list with 48.26% underweight children, followed by West Singhbhum in Jharkhand (44.80%). Dhar ranks third, with Khargone and Barwani also in the top 10. The data highlights Madhya Pradesh's disproportionate share of the national malnutrition burden. In the same reply to a question by Bihar MP Sudama Prasad, Union minister of state for WCD Savitri Thakur detailed funds released under Mission Poshan 2.0. Madhya Pradesh received Rs 4,364.69 crore between 2021-22 and 2024-25. When contacted, Bhuria said: "We are regularly monitoring the data and initiating several innovative interventions. As a pilot in Jhabua district, we launched a drive named 'Motihai' (Badi Maa in the local language). At every anganwadi, a woman was deployed to massage the kids and provide traditional nutrition. We prepared files for each child who needed care, and even children migrating with their parents are being tracked. This innovation has given very good results in Jhabua. We will be initiating such initiatives in other districts like Dhar, Khargone, Barwani, and wherever such interventions are required." Poshan Abhiyaan made significant strides in improving nutrition outcomes in India: Minister

Poshan Abhiyaan has made significant strides in improving nutrition outcomes in India, said Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Road, Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra on Monday. Addressing an event in the national capital, Malhotra said that Poshan Abhiyaan is 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government's effort and commitment to addressing India's malnutrition challenges'. 'Poshan Abhiyan has made significant strides in improving nutrition outcomes in India, particularly among children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers,' Malhotra added. Launched in 2018, the campaign to fight malnutrition has promoted healthy growth and development in the country. 'The programme has enabled a nationwide Jan Andolan, catalysing nutrition-related behavioural change and promoting positive feeding and healthcare practices,' the Minister said. He also applauded the Poshan Tracker App which enables real-time monitoring of nutrition services, ensuring timely interventions and better tracking of progress. Mission Poshan 2.0 is a Rs 1.81 lakh crore initiative (2021-26) that targets children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. It not only integrates nutrition, health, and community efforts but also uses digital tools like the Poshan Tracker -- winner of the Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Public Administration 2024 -- to drive real-time monitoring and behavioural change. As of March 2025, a total of 99.02 per cent of beneficiaries are Aadhaar-verified, and a face authentication module ensures transparency in distributing take-home rations, according to the government. Malhotra also advocated ensuring adequate nutrition for pregnant women and lactating mothers -- crucial for healthy child development. Maternal nutrition plays a vital role in preventing health complications during childbirth and ensuring healthy birth outcomes, the MoS added. 'By prioritising nutrition, India can build a healthier, more productive, and prosperous nation, achieving its vision of a Viksit Bharat,' the Minister said.
