Teen girls assaulted by ‘masked man' in Mission park: RCMP
Mission RCMP provided this image of a suspect in an assault on June 6, 2025. Mounties are appealing for witnesses and information after a 'masked man' assaulted two teens in a Mission park Friday night. Officers were called to Centennial Park around 9 p.m. after witnesses reported the incident, the Mission RCMP said Sunday. 'A masked man kicked one of the girls off her e-scooter, causing her to fall to the ground, and also pushed the other girl to the ground. The man attempted to take the girl's scooter but left it and instead stole an iPhone from one of the girls, which had fallen onto the ground,' a statement from the detachment said. 'It was still daylight at the time and there were numerous other people in the park and outside in the area. A good neighbour ran up to intervene, and the offender ran off.' The girls, who are 15 and 16, suffered minor injuries. The RCMP has released images of a suspect, who is described as a white man wearing a ski mask and black clothing. 'He was not known to the girls,' according to police. Anyone with information is urged to call 604-826-7161 and quote file number 25-6584. People who live near Grand Street and 14th Avenue are also being asked to review CCTV video to see if it captured any images of the suspect.

Tracked stolen AirPods lead to arrest of break-and-enter suspect in Abbotsford, B.C.
An RCMP patch is seen on the shoulder of an assistant commissioner in Surrey, B.C., on Friday, April 28, 2023. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darryl Dyck A 29-year-old Mission man who allegedly broke into a home in Abbotsford, B.C., sabotaged his own escape attempt after a stolen set of AirPods led police directly to him. According to a statement from Mission RCMP, the resident of the Abbotsford farm property learned his home had been broken into – and a pair of Apple AirPods and numerous vehicle keys had been taken – the morning of May 29. Using a tracking app on his phone, he followed the AirPods to an Abbotsford gas station and arrived to find a 'suspicious vehicle' being filled up at the pump, the statement said. According to police, the suspects attempted to flee after recognizing the man's vehicle as the same one they had attempted to break into just hours earlier. One suspect swiftly reversed with the gas pump still slotted into the car, leaving the other to remove it before they both fled the area. The goose chase continued as the man followed his stolen earphones to a mall parking lot in Mission, only to watch the suspects take off once more as they saw his truck arrive. The suspects were reported to be 'driving dangerously and into oncoming traffic,' police said. The suspects were caught after they fled for their home on Sixth Avenue with the tracked tech in tow, ultimately leading the man, and the police, directly to them. 'Police were called, and Mission RCMP's Crime Reduction Unit used unmarked vehicles to conduct surveillance of the residence, while other officers applied for a search warrant,' police said in the statement. 'The warrant was granted hours later, and officers from Mission RCMP and the Abbotsford Police Department executed the search warrant that evening.' Investigators found the AirPods, stolen keys, and 'various other identification documents,' and a Mission man was taken into custody, said police. He was found to have numerous prior convictions for property crimes and other offences. 'Although this investigation had a successful outcome, police caution the public not to follow or approach someone whom they believe has stolen from them, and to instead immediately call police, as property crime offenders can often resort to desperate measures to try to get away,' Mounties said in the statement. 'Fortunately, in this case, the only casualty was a broken gas pump hose.'

Residents of Mission, B.C., told to shelter in place after fire on derelict vessel
Some residents of the Fraser Valley city of Mission have been told to shelter in place after a fire on a derelict vessel overnight on Saturday. The City of Mission issued an emergency alert just before 4 a.m. PT warning of a fire on the abandoned Queen of Sidney ferry, which was moored just northwest of Matsqui Island approximately 55 km east of Vancouver. B.C. Ferries says the ship was in operation from 1960 to 2000. The 102-metre vessel was sold in 2002. Its current owner is unknown. On its website, Mission says the cause of the fire is not yet known but it is considered to be suspicious. Residents near the fire — from Chester Street to 287 Street, including the Silverdale area — have been told to stay indoors, close all windows and doors, and turn off any ventilation systems that draw in air from outside. "Police attended the area and confirmed a large plume of smoke coming from the vessel, which had an obvious impact on air quality in the area," read a statement from Mission RCMP on Saturday morning. Police said that, as of Saturday morning, there was nothing to indicate the fire was intentionally set — but investigators haven't been able to board the vessel due to the hazardous nature of the smoke. CBC News has reached out to the Canadian Coast Guard for this story. A spokesperson for the Environment Ministry deferred comment to the Mission fire department. The Queen of Sidney is among a number of derelict vessels along B.C. waterways that have raised environmental concerns in recent years, particularly given they could pose public safety risks. In late March, the iconic McBarge vessel — a barge which housed a McDonald's restaurant during Expo 86 — sank on the Fraser River near Maple Ridge, B.C., northwest of where the Queen of Sidney was moored.
