‘Joe Overstreet: Taking Flight' Review: Precision and Progression at the Menil Collection

Houston A question for a hypothetical curatorial seminar in 'Reconciling Abstraction and Social Comment in Contemporary American Painting': What to make of the African-American abstract painter Joe Overstreet? The exhibition 'Joe Overstreet: Taking Flight,' at the Menil Collection in Houston, is at first glance—and more so after longer visual consideration without reading explanatory labels—a show of dazzlingly inventive abstraction, with both convincing and somewhat tenuous visual connections to the situation of black people in American society. (Organized by associate curator Natalie Dupêcher, the show continues through July 13 before traveling to the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson.) The exhibition features such gracefully daring work as 'Free Direction' (1971), a 10-foot-wide semi-sculpture, in purple and black, of squares and parallelograms in tentlike tension.

Of Salt and Spirit: Black Quilters in the American South

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The intricate work by talented artists across the South has made its way to the capital city. Of Salt and Spirit: Black Quilters in the American South showcases more than 50 handmade and machine-stitched quilts spanning from the 1960s to 2010. The exhibit is on display at the Mississippi Museum of Art (MMA) in Jackson. 'The exhibition really explores the traditions and stories and the community impact that quilting and these quilt makers had from a black feminist lens. And it puts a fresh interpretation on what the craft actually is. You'll see as you go through the exhibition, some of them are the more traditional, functional uses,' said Andrea Donelson, associate director of Communications at MMA. 'We actually have one in our beginning section, which is called Homecoming, and we have a quilt that's laid in standard use like it would be in a bed. And what I love, particularly about this quilt, is that you can see some of the wear on it, and it really makes it feel like, you know, this is something coming out of someone's grandmother's house and that there's history and use within that quilt, which I think is important.' Black History Month explained: Its origins, celebrations and myths The historical significance is even more important. 'During times of slavery, a lot of quilts were used for enslaved Africans to find freedom because there were certain patterns in certain codes that were embedded in the quilt. And only the trained would know that,' said Stephany Brown, an artist. Brown has several quilts she created on display at the museum. The quilts tell a powerful story. 'Enslaved Africans, when they were running, going to freedom, they look for the North Star in the sky, so they would know which direction it led them to freedom. And so, I put the North Star in here. Also, you see the buttons that represent the different plantations,' she explained. While it may take one quilter to create 18 quilts in one year, it takes Brown sometimes 18 months to create just one of her unique artworks. 'I stitch each quilt by hand. Every quilter has to find their method. What inspires them? The way they create. You stitch how you, you know, just have your way and don't stress out about it. Take your time,' she said.
