Rosehill Saturday Turf Talk: Mitch Cohen's keen on $5 best bet as Shayne O'Cass spruiks $17 pop
Form analysts Mitch Cohen and Shayne O'Cass debate all the key chances on Saturday's 10-race card at Rosehill Gardens in this week's edition of Turf Talk. MITCH'S BEST BET Race 6 No.2 TRAVOLTA SHAYNO'S BEST BET Race 3 No.10 REFLECT â– â– â– â– â– Shayno: Hello Mitchy. It is going to be a wet Rosebud day on Saturday but it looks like at least we will have a Rosebud! I am with one of my favourite 2YO's from last season named after one of my favourite bands, SKYHOOK (Race 5 No.1). And yes I am aware Mitchy it was Skyhooks! Mitch: We can agree to start, Skyhooks are a great band indeed. As for the horse, I think he might want a bit further. I've gone the way of PALLATON (Race 5 No.5). He has trialled up nicely and could be in for a big spring. 2 trials, 2 wins into spring for Pallaton (3c Wootton Bassett x Anevay) Had an air of potential topliner about him during the 2YO season. We're about to find out! @MFreedmanRacing @CoolmoreAus — Breednet (@BreednetNews) August 7, 2025 Shayno: Speaking of favourite horses, I've tipped OUR GOLD HOPE (Race 7 No.6) when she has been $5 and / or $81 dollars and even though she hasn't paid off, money-wise, she has never let me down. Like her on Saturday and for the spring. Mitch: You are honorary member of the Kembla supporters club. Of course I am with her too. I have loved her trials and she should relish the rain affected track on the weekend. Shayno: If I was a trainer Mitchy, I would have been dying to get the call from Godolphin to house POLYGLOT (Race 9 No.7). This grandson of Forensics has a lot of talent and trialled like a bomb the other day. Victory ✌ï¸ Victoire 🇫🇷 Victoria 🇰🇸 Polyglot is too good for them at Rosehill and that's an early double for @mcacajamez! @JamesCummings88 | @godolphin | @aus_turf_club — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) January 18, 2025 Mitch: Michael Freedman didn't take long to get on the board with Godolphin. His first runner Ohope won emphatically at Hawkesbury during the week. Polyglot looks a great chance to do the same. We just need to put our faith in J-Mac from the gate. Shayno: I am with DISNECK (Race 10 No.3) at the odds in the last. I thought his first-up run was a beauty. Thoughts? Mitch: There's a filly down the bottom that I've got a bit of time for and her name is BAUHINIA (Race 10 No.17). She's been off the scene since the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas but has trialled up nicely. She is also in at Wyong on Sunday so we may have to wait another 24 hours. Shayno: My best is REFLECT (Race 3 No.10). She's pretty much my number one draft pick for the spring. Mitch: A $17 best bet, the punters could build you a statue come Saturday afternoon. I like TRAVOLTA (Race 6 No.2). Apprentice Siena Grima rode a peach for Chris Waller during the week and confident she can do it again.

NEXT BEST Race 8 No.6: BARBAROSSA Godolphin colt resuming for new trainer Ciaron Maher, he can make a strong first impression from a favourable draw. VALUE BET Race 6 No.14: SUPER ECLIPSE A lightly-raced mare stepping up to 2000m for the first time. She should be ready to peak third-up at the right trip. QUADDIE Race 5: 1, 2 Race 6: 1, 3, 5, 12, 14 Race 7: 1, 2 Race 8: 6, 11 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW JAY FORD only has two rides on Savvy Hallie and Wild Thoughts but tipping he walks away with a perfect record. TRAINER TO FOLLOW BJORN BAKER is coming off a career best season and can continue in the same vein with horses like Shirvington and O'invincible. TAMWORTH TIPS BEST BET Race 4 No.8: PINDORAMA Got back in a leader dominated race last time but got home well enough. The step up to a mile here with Aaron Bullock on should suit. NEXT BEST Race 2 No.9: SEE YOU THEN Knocking at the door with three seconds in as many start to begin her career. She finds another winnable race. VALUE BET Race 5 No.7: ANOTHER PEACH A strong on-speed winner last start at Grafton with runner-up Sawmill franking that form at Moruya on Tuesday. She will give them something to catch. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ KEMBLA GRANGE INSIDE MAIL RACE 1: SUPER MAIDEN HANDICAP (1400m) SIRIUS LEGEND (1) is another lightly-raced galloper raced by The Everest-winning owner Bon Ho. The son of Dundeel has made the stable switch to Anthony and Sam Freedman and did more than enough at his first start for them, working home strongly for second at Randwick Kensington. He can go one better here. ANDRON's (2) debut has been a long-time coming for connections with seven trials under his belt over multiple preps. He was doing his best work late in both hitouts this time and has to be a huge market watch. CELLARMASTER (8) and FEAZABEEL (3) can improve second-up. BET: SIRIUS LEGEND to win, saver Andron at odds. RACE 2: MIDWAY MAIDEN PLATE (1000m) It's hard to see SAVVY HAILLIE (11) starting anything other than a firm odds-on favourite. While this daughter of Hellbent is yet to win, she boasts incredible two-year-old form. She was only beaten by subsequent Group 1 Champagne Stakes winner Nepotism in Group 3 company before running second to gun filly Tempted in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes to finish her juvenile season. I AM A WINNER (1) has been gelded and could be ready to unlock his undoubtable potential. CUBAN CIGAR (5) has trialled up well ahead of her debut and is among the place hopes. BET: Trifecta 11 (standout) from 1-5-6-8. RACE 3: F&M BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1200m) O'INVINCIBLE (1) is a blue blood mare by Snitzel out of Group 1 winner Viddora that is still lightly-raced. She was a sharp improver last time and only got gunned down late by a stakes-quality horse in waiting in the form of Amreekiyah at Canterbury. She can go one better here. Trainer Bjorn Baker took the country route he often uses to get her stablemate SHIRLEY'S TRIBUTE (8) on the board at Bathurst. It was a nice win and she should take plenty of benefit from it. MAMUSHKA (2), out of Group 1 winner Steps In Time, returns after showing plenty of promise in her first prep. BET: O'INVINCIBLE to win. RACE 4: BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP (1400m) OCEANFRONT (2) will be one of the first runners for Nacim Dilmi as he begins his training journey in charge of Domeland. He did enough first-up in heavy conditions at Tamworth to suggest he can run well again on what will be a rain affected surface. THE EXTREME CAT (1) has the best form in this race after flashing home for third at this track on July 17. The heavy conditions are the concern with Nathan Doyle also nominating him for Saturday. YOUR NOT THE BOSS (7) is a better horse than what he showed last Friday at this same track and trip. BET: OCEANFRONT each-way. RACE 5: CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1500m) WILD THOUGHTS (2) has made a promising start to his career with a win and two placings in three starts. His maiden victory came last time with an impressive two length success over 1500m at this venue. The horse that beat him before that, Cold Brew, has since won his next two so the form stacks up. He just needs to handle the ground to win again. AFLOAT (3) is another that broke his maiden well last start, eased down late to score a 1300m event at Hawkesbury. The step up to 1500m looks ideal. The same goes for FORBIDDEN RIFF (7), who got too far back in a 1300m event at Kembla last time. BET: WILD THOUGHTS to win. RACE 6: MAIDEN PLATE (2000m) SUPER ECLIPSE (14) finds herself in an even race filled with chances but she's among the best of them. She was a beaten favourite over a mile at Wyong last time but just looked to find them too slick for her when the speed went on. Stepping up to 2000m third-up should be in her sweet spot. ENTITLEMENT (12) has been knocking at the door with five placings in eight starts. She's rockhard fit, has a good draw and has a favourable on-speed racing pattern. Stablemate ALWAYS SHINING (1) could be a sharp improver stepping up in trip. BET: Boxed trifecta 1, 3, 5, 12, 14. RACE 7: CG&E BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1200m) SHIRVINGTON (1), like his namesake, can sprint well fresh with the topweight of 61.5kg. The Bjorn Baker-trained four-year-old was a winner first-up last prep before baking it up with success at this track and trip. FRONTEX (2) is back from a 153-day break. He showed plenty during his first prep with a win and two placings in three starts, breaking his maiden stylishly at Newcastle on March 7. ALIGNED (8) was given every chance to break his maiden last time and delivered at Gosford. He can run well again. BET: Quinella 1, 2. RACE 8: MAIDEN PLATE (1200m) BARBAROSSA (6) was scratched from Canterbury on Wednesday and finds himself at the provincials for new trainer Ciaron Maher. The last time we saw the Godolphin colt, he ran a creditable fourth in the Group 3 Bailleau on a heavy track. He looks ready to run well first-up. ARTISTIC VENTURE (11) is a promising filly that wasn't far away in a pair of Golden Slipper lead-ups, finishing fifth in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes and Group 3 Magic Night Stakes. She's got some class for sure. KENDALIA (2) is a knockout hope at odds in his return. BET: BARBAROSSA to win, quinella 6, 11.

Mitch Cohen's Blackbook: Five to follow from Rosehill Gardens
Daily Telegraph racing expert Mitch Cohen has analysed all the action from Saturday's season opening metropolitan meeting at Rosehill Gardens. FIVE TO FOLLOW MONKHANA (2nd, race 2) Denim Wynen got her first city winner with Sunshine Law but would have been rapt with the return of this mare. She will get better over more ground as she gets deeper into the preparation. WITHOUT PARALLEL (1st, race 3) It was only a win in Highway grade but very few horses can lay claim to winning the first four starts of their career. She could be a chance for a Kosciuszko slot if she continues in the same vein. GRAND PRAIRIE (2nd, race 5) A rock-hard fit Stardeel on the back-up proved too hard to overcome but this lightly-raced colt battled on OK in ground that didn't seem to suit. He's learning his craft but looks to have some ability. JUJA KIBO (1st, race 7) This Irish import found another gear late to mow down Captain Maverick and score back-to-back victories. He's still only lightly-raced but looks a stayer of stakes quality. CAPTAIN FURAI (2nd, race 8) Ran into one of the better wet trackers in Elson Boy but still did more than enough in his return. He can take advantage of the softer winter tracks and win next start. STEWARDS SAY Dumebi (race 2): Lost its off-hind plate in running. Sister Daae (race 4): Raced in restricted room between Sunshine Law and Super Norwest, which shifted in. Was unable to be fully tested over the final 150m. Captain Maverick (race 7): The gelding was found to have a laceration to the off-hind medial pastern. Yoshinobu (race 9): Zac Lloyd reported the gelding was never properly balanced on the heavy track and did not handle the conditions. First Person (race 10): A post-race veterinary examination found the mare to have a cardiac murmour. She will require vets clearance and an ecocardiograph before racing again. CRUNCH TIME Amusing (race 1): Jockey James McDonald stuck to the inside as this Godolphin mare got home with a last 600m of 36.32 seconds. She saved the best to last with her final 200m of 12.24 a clear best. Without Parallel (race 3): Tucked in just behind the leader, she rattled off a clear race best 36.39 seconds to win comfortably. Her splits home of 11.90 and 12.42 helped her score in dominant fashion. Juja Kibo (race 7): Ran the same final 600m of 37.30 seconds as runner-up Captain Maverick but it was all about his superior last 200m, clocking 12.38 late to prevail. Ravenclaw (race 10): Did it at both ends with race best splits to start and finish the last. He led them up before finishing off in 35.53 seconds for his last 600m, including a 11.48 split between the 400m and 200m. TRACK TALK 'It's great for Australian racing and to be one of the nine or 10 trainers to be chosen to train for them is an honour to be considered good enough to train for them.' Chris Waller after Godolphin mare Amusing's win. 'It always sucks going back to zero, especially after such a long season like it was but it's good to make the perfect start and here we go again.' Premiership winner James McDonald after his first win of the season. 'I only have six in work, I do all the work myself, literally seven days morning and afternoon.' Denim Wynen following her first Sydney winner. 'Horses can go from Highway races to The Kosciuszko but they need to win like she did.' Matt Dunn on Without Parallel. 'It's always important to kick off the season with a winner and while it's not all about strike rate, we are currently at 100 per cent.' Bjorn Baker after Stardeel's win. THIS WEEK IN NSW RACING Monday: Wagga Riverside, Taree Tuesday: Gunnedah, Moruya Wednesday: Canterbury Park Thursday: Kembla Grange, Quirindi Friday: Port Macquarie, Canberra Saturday: Royal Randwick, Newcastle, Casino, Louth Sunday: Dubbo, Wagga RON DUFFICY'S ROSEHILL GARDENS BLACKBOOK RUN OF THE DAY It was hard not to be impressed by the unbeaten mare from Murwillumbah Without Parallel. She may lack experience but seems to have a great attitude and a lovely racing style and plenty of raw ability to go with it. FORGET THEY RAN War Eternal seemed to lose his footing approaching the home turn losing his stride and took a while to get his confidence back running on well. He might have got a whole lot closer if that didn't happen. THE BLACK BOOK Outside of Without Parallel which has upside to come it was hard not to be impressed by the win of up and coming stayer Juja Kibo. He lost momentum at a vital stage and did a fantastic job to pick himself up to win after looking beaten. RIDE OF THE DAY Anna Roper was unlucky to have a season of injury but started the new one off with a bang with a winning double. She is a very talented rider on the rise.

Mitch Cohen's Blackbook: Five to follow from Royal Randwick
Daily Telegraph racing writer Mitch Cohen has analysed the Royal Randwick meeting on Saturday and found a few worth following. PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! FIVE TO FOLLOW KOIBITO (race 1, 4th) The winner Nashville Jack is a horse you will see in better races but this filly did a terrific job on debut, doing her best work late. She might be a prep away but has potential. SO YOU ARE (race 3, 2nd) This lightly-raced son of So You Think is still learning his craft and hit the line nicely over 1800m in the Highway. He will come into his own over 2000m plus. GLORIOUS MOMENTS (race 4, 1st) It was only a Benchmark 72 but it's easy to see the son of Brutal landing in better races soon. He's got stakes quality and will go through his grades quickly. SLINKY (race 7, 3rd) Put a line through her run two starts ago when she landed too close, she produced a far better run ridden cold. If she finds herself in a race with speed on next start she's worth backing. TRAVOLTA (race 10, 1st) He's won two of his three starts this preparation and can steadily go through his grades in his second preparation in Australia. Back him with confidence if the track is wet. STEWARDS SAY Open Secret (race 1): Did not feel comfortable on the soft track. Was found to be coughing post-race and will undergo further veterinary checks, including an endoscopic examination. Forecaster (race 2): Apprentice William Stanley was fined $500 for striking the gelding nine times before the 100m, four more than permitted. In Summer (race 3): Jockey Jason Collett felt the prevailing racing surface hampered her ability to close off as expected. Ruby Flyer (race 5): Did not travel comfortably on the soft track and failed to fire. Was found to be slow to recover post-race. Storm The Ramparts (race 8): A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding was slow to recover and lost his off-fore plate. He will be spelled. The Black Cloud (race 8): Did not let down under pressure and weakened in the straight. Another horse that was slow to recover post-race. Kazalark (race 10): Late scratching at 9.55am on vets advice after being found lame in the off-foreleg. CRUNCH TIME Nashville Jack (race 1): Surged home along the inside to finish his last 600m in 36.09 seconds. Wisnierska (36.08) and Koibito (36.03) both got home well in behind. Investment (race 6): She was last at one stage but relished the conditions as she was a race best split for every furlong from the 1000m to the finish. Her last 600m of 38.90 seconds was a clear best. Cigar Flick (race 8): Only had a couple of runners behind her in the run before doing her best work down the outside to finish her last 600m in 35.45 seconds. Her last 200m of 12.45 was the best of the race. Regimental Colours (race 9): Showed a terrific finishing burst, running the best final three furlongs of the race to win with splits of 11.62, 11.71 and 12.61 seconds. Her last 600m totally 35.94. TRACK TALK 'He is a nice horse, he has a bit of substance to him.' - Jockey Jason Collett on Nashville Jack. 'I was actually watching the race with Charlie (Duckworth) and said 'I don't know what this Tommy is doing, we said we were going to come through them and have the last crack at them'. Then I said after the race 'that's why Tommy is a jockey and I am a trainer'. - Chris Waller after Cigar Flick's win. 'He's a lovely horse. It's taken a fair while for us to get to this point but finally he's starting to show what we've known he has.' - Stable rep Keith Lam on Glorious Moments. 'If I get offered the chance I'll jump on a plane to come back and ride this horse. I'd go anywhere to ride him.' - Jockey Heavelon Van Der Hoven, who moved to Brisbane on Sunday, on Glorious Moments. 'I thought she could improve a bit today. I said to a few people she had a sneaky chance.' Joe Pride after $61 shot Investment saluted. THIS WEEK IN NSW RACING Monday: Kempsey Tuesday: Wagga, Wellington Wednesday: Warwick Farm Thursday: Scone Friday: Kembla Grange, Coffs Harbour Saturday: Rosehill Gardens, Newcastle, Cobar, Tuncurry Sunday: Wyong, Forbes
