HC directs YouTuber to take down defamatory content on news agency

HC directs YouTuber to take down defamatory content on news agency NEW DELHI: Delhi HC Thursday instructed YouTuber Mohak Mangal to remove segments of a video he had uploaded, contending that its contents related to ANI were harmful to the news agency. The court passed the order while hearing the news agency's defamation case. Justice Amit Bansal said Mohak should have expressed his opinion in a civilised manner. "'Hafta wasooli', 'gunda raaj', You will take this down... Do it today. Whoever is using this kind of language, please take instructions." The video titled 'Dear ANI' suggests that ANI's copyright enforcement and licensing fee requirements on YouTube were akin to extortion. Senior advocate Amit Sibal and advocate Sidhant Kumar, appearing for ANI, submitted before the court that the content was both defamatory and inflammatory. "He starts a media campaign against me (ANI) that spiralled into a concerted campaign which is nothing short of vilifying and per se defamatory. They are calling me a thug, extortionist, gunda," Sibal said. He referred to social media statements by Kunal Kamra and Mohammed Zubair, who supported Mohak's position on ANI's alleged practices. Senior advocate Chander Lall and advocate Nakul Gandhi, Mohak's counsels, argued ANI bypassed proper legal channels and was employing threats. "If they have a grievance against me, they can't call me and extort money... that I will block your channel if you don't pay," Lall said.

Is ANI Extorting YouTubers? Here's What Mohak Mangal Alleges

YouTube creator Mohak Mangal has written to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, alleging that leading news agency ANI is using copyright enforcement tools to unfairly demand money from digital creators after India's military response to the May 7 terrorist attack. Mohak posted a 33-minute video supporting India's Operation Sindoor, which was removed by YouTube after ANI filed a copyright strike for using nine seconds of its footage. Mohak says ANI has now asked for Rs 48 lakh plus GST to withdraw the strike and restore his channel, a demand he has described as extortion. In his letter to Minister Vaishnaw, Mangal said this is not just about his video. He believes this action harms creative freedom and sets a bad example. He asked for intervention to stop such actions and protect India's creator economy. The original video, meant to support the Indian Armed Forces, had gained 2 million views before being taken down. The incident has caused outrage on social media. Kunal Kamra said YouTube India should be held responsible and ban ANI for blackmailing creators. Influencer Dhruv Rathee called it an extortion racket and urged creators to unite. This controversy underscore problems in India's digital copyright system. While platforms like YouTube use automated systems to flag content, many say these tools can be misused by bigger players with legal power.

Mohak Matkar spent days in a Rajasthan village to work on her dialect and perfect her role for Saru; says 'I made a conscious effort to speak to as many locals as possible'

TV's latest fiction show Saru, introduces viewers to the inspiring journey of a determined young woman from Khares village in Rajasthan, as she battles societal constraints to pursue her dreams of higher education . Portraying the lead role is debutante Mohak Matkar , who has gone the extra mile to lend authenticity to her character, not just through performance, but by immersing herself in the culture, speech, and soul of the region. To portray Saru convincingly with integrity and truth, Mohak undertook rigorous dialect training , working closely with a coach to grasp the nuances of Rajasthani speech, including tone, rhythm, and pronunciation. But her preparation extended far beyond the script. During the on-location shoot in Rajasthan, she actively engaged with local women and schoolgirls, closely observing their mannerisms, expressions, and conversations. This immersive experience offered her a deeper understanding of how people across ages and genders communicate, helping her internalize the language as a living, emotional expression rather than just dialogue. Mohak Matkar said, 'While preparing for my role as Saru, I made a conscious effort to speak to as many locals as possible during the shoot in Rajasthan. Coming from a city background, this was an entirely new experience for me, and it was fascinating to observe how the dialect varies. When I first started working with my dialect coach, I used to get confused; however, now I have started picking it up well. I also met a group of schoolgirls who giggled while correcting my pronunciation—but they did it with such warmth, it made me feel like I was part of their world. These small yet powerful experiences helped me embody the character more truthfully and I am looking forward to sharing it with the audiences!' With her grounded performance and honest preparation, Mohak is all set to win hearts as Saru as she embarks on her empowering journey.
