Senior citizen in Miri fined RM500 for possessing illegally obtained funds

MIRI (June 19): A senior citizen was fined RM500 in default one month's imprisonment by the Magistrates' Court here today for possessing money obtained through unlawful means.
Magistrate Ashok Linggam imposed the fine on 75-year-old Mohamad Razali Mohamad from Jalan Jambatan Kampung Bakar Batu, Johor Bahru, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 37(1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance Sarawak 1958.
The Section provides for a jail term of up to three months and a fine of up to RM500 upon conviction.
According to the case facts, Mohamad Razali was found in possession of RM1,500 in his bank account, which had been unlawfully obtained.
The offence took place at a house along Jalan Taman Piasau 4, Piasau Garden here at around 11.06am on Oct 1, 2024
In mitigation, Mohamad Razali pleaded for leniency, citing that this was his first offence.
Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman prosecuted the case, while Mohamad Razali was unrepresented by legal counsel.
