Man charged with murder of ex-wife in Pulau Dayang Bunting
LANGKAWI: A man was charged in the magistrate's court here today with the murder of his ex-wife in the waters off Pantai Oak, Pulau Dayang Bunting, two weeks ago.
Mohamad Shafiq Ma Ean Chaiyan, 26, nodded to indicate he understood the charge when it was read out before magistrate Nurul Natasha Rizal.
No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
He is accused of murdering Fadilah Saidon, 21, between 11am and 3pm on July 30.
The offence, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carries the death penalty or imprisonment of up to 40 years, along with no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Ain Nur Sofea Noridan appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented.
Earlier, Ain Nur Sofea requested that no bail be granted, as the case is being investigated under Section 302.
The court allowed the application and fixed Oct 14 for mention, pending the submission of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) report from the Chemistry Department.
